The ability to distinguish between effective and ineffective study strategies based on feedback is of utmost importance for secondary school leavers transitioning to tertiary education (Brinkworth et al., 2009; Salisbury & Karasmanis, 2011). Often accompanying this learning environment transition is academic difficulty and an increased possibility of failure, and it is therefore essential for undergraduate students, in particular those studying the disciplines of Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM), to establish a solid repertoire of learning strategies early in their academic career. Self-regulation is a key component of learning that can be fostered to encourage a successful transition from secondary school to university (Vosniadou, 2020). Self-regulated learning refers to learning that is fostered by one’s metacognition, strategy adaptability, and motivation. Of these constructs, metacognition is fundamental, as having self-awareness allows one to identify the requirement for corrective action in the learning process, allowing learners to monitor their behaviour and reflect on the success of their learning strategies, where the motivation to do this should lead to strategy adaptation. In addition, students must make accurate self-efficacious judgements about their learning in order to evaluate the effectiveness of their learning strategies or to decide when they have sufficiently completed a learning task. Therefore, in order to develop a means of improving students’ transition from secondary school to university, one must first appreciate the impacts of self-regulated learning and self-efficacy on academic performance. This review aims to focus on self-regulated learning and self-efficacy, of which self-regulated learning is a construct of metacognition, motivation and strategy adaptability. This review will also evaluate self-regulated learning with an emphasis on Zimmerman’s model, the calibration of self-efficacy, and how students might break the cycle of poor learning with a focus on STEM.

Self-control and self-regulated learning refer to those processes and strategies whereby individuals exert agency in facing educational demands. This study tested a structural model which predicts that self-control has direct effect on school achievement, as well as mediated by metacognitive self-regulation, academic self-efficacy, and regulatory motivational styles as the variables related to self-regulated learning. The research was carried out on a stratified random sample of 575 eighth grade students. It was shown that the effect of self-control on achievement is mediated by self-efficacy. In other words, students who have heightened selfcontrol and believe in their own ability to meet school demands will be successful in school regardless of the complexity of their learning or whether they are autonomously motivated. The implications of such a finding were considered, as well as the limitations of the research and the indications for future research.

This paper addresses the issue of how to assess learners’ engagement with activities designed to develop self-regulatory learning strategies in the context of foreign language teaching and learning. The argument is that, if the aim of these activities is the development of learners’ self-regulation, then the assessment practices used must also reflect this orientation. The problem herein is that traditional assessment practices are typically normative in nature, endorsing understandings of intelligence as fixed and failure as unacceptable. Using such approaches to assess learner engagement with self-regulated learning activities will undermine efforts to promote learner development, and may demotivate learners. This paper will discuss these issues through a critical reflection on assessment practices used to evaluate EFL learners’ engagement with an assessable homework activity designed to develop their self-regulatory strategies. It is argued that learning-oriented assessment principles and practices are most suited to the evaluation of self-regulated learning in EFL. Potential issues related to the application of learning-oriented assessment in EFL contexts are also discussed.

Generally considered as a prevalent occurrence in academic settings, procrastination was analyzed in association with constructs such as self-efficacy, self-esteem, anxiety, stress, and fear of failure. This study investigated the role played by self-regulated learning strategies in predicting procrastination among university students. To this purpose, the relationships of procrastination with cognitive and metacognitive learning strategies and time management were explored in the entire sample, as well as in male and female groups. Gender differences were taken into account due to the mixed results that emerged in previous studies. This cross-sectional study involved 450 university students (M = 230; F = 220; Mage = 21.08, DS = 3.25) who completed a self-reported questionnaire including a sociodemographic section, the Tuckman Procrastination Scale, the Time Management Scale, and the Metacognitive Self-Regulation and Critical Thinking Scales. Descriptive and inferential analyses were applied to the data. The main findings indicated that temporal and metacognitive components play an important role in students’ academic achievement and that, compared to females, males procrastinate more due to poor time management skills and metacognitive strategies. Practical implications were suggested to help students to overcome their dilatory behavior.

This study examines the relationships between self-efficacy, task value, and the use of self-regulated learning strategies by massive open online course (MOOC) learners from a social cognitive perspective. A total of 184 participants who enrolled in two MOOCs completed surveys. The results of Pearson’s correlation analysis show a positive correlation between self-efficacy and the use of self-regulated learning strategies, as well as a positive correlation between task value and the use of self-regulated learning strategies. The results of hierarchical multiple regression analysis show that self-efficacy and task value are significant predictors of the use of self-regulated learning strategies. There was a statistically significant difference in the use of self-regulated learning strategies between learners who possessed high self-efficacy and those who possessed low self-efficacy. In addition, learners who had high task value showed statistically significant higher average self-regulated learning scores than those who had low task value. Implications and future research directions are discussed based on the findings.

Self-regulated learning is an active participation in a learning process, which comprises cognitive, metacognitive and behavioural processes, and involves learning strategies and peer learning. In the basis of self-regulation is motivation, which in school settings can be specified as test anxiety, selfefficacy, and intrinsic and extrinsic value. The aim of this research was to verify the differences between male and female participants as well as between fifth- and seventh-grade students, regarding intrinsic and extrinsic value, self-efficacy, test anxiety, learning strategies and peer learning. Participants were fifth- and seventh-grade students (N = 172) from two elementary schools. No differences were found between male and female participants in intrinsic and extrinsic value, self-efficacy, learning strategies and peer learning. However, statistically significant differences in the all of the above-mentioned variables were found between younger and older students. Weaker motivation and self-regulated learning, found among older students, confirmed previous findings in this field. Results are discussed within the framework of personality development and selfdetermination theory which describe academic motivation and self-regulated learning.

One of the most known instruments for the evaluation of self regulated learning strategies is the Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire. The aspect of self regulation investigated in this research is cognitive self regulation. The purpose of this research is to estimate the convergent validity of the cognitive and metacognitive MSLQ scales, after their translation in Romanian. Our main hypothesis is that there is high level of overlapping between self regulation measured by MSLQ (The Motivated Strategies of Learning Questionnaire) and self regulation measured by ILS (Inventory of Learning Styles). The analysis of the two revealed moderately positive inter­correlation. Convergent validity showed that cognitive and metacognitive self regulation scales from MSLQ are able to measure students' learning strategies in a reliable and valid fashion.

Background: Self-regulation related to cognition and behaviour is an important factor in learning and academic achievement. Self-regulated learning is defined as the process of learning in which students activate and develop their own cognition, motivation and behaviour through self-regulatory processes.Objectives: The aim of this study was to determine the self-regulation skills of nursing students on a health education course in a state university in Turkey.Methods: The study sample consisted of 110 students who attended the class on the day of the survey and agreed to participate in the study. Data were collected with the Turkish version of the ‘Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire’, which was adapted by Büyüköztürk et al. (2004). Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage and mean, as well as the Mann–Whitney U test, t-test and analysis of variance (ANOVA).Results: The results showed that the participants were motivated by external factors, using the elaboration strategy more frequently than other learning strategies. Second- and third-year students had various motivational levels and preferred different types of learning strategies, and those students who had more positive perceptions of the school, the course and the instructor evinced higher levels of internal responsibility and benefited from learning strategies more frequently.Conclusion: Nursing students were found to be predominantly motivated by extrinsic factors and preferred the elaboration learning strategy.
