This study’s objective is to examine the relationship between the mean years of schooling, level of adult literacyskills, and democratic development levels. The study was designed as a relational survey model. The analyticsemployed is the path analysis, which tests the existence of causal relationship between the variables. The statisticalanalysis indicates that a significant and strong relationship exists between the mean years of schooling and adultliteracy skills and further that a significant, medium level, relationship is present between the countries’ adult literacyskills and their democratic development levels. Moreover, literacy skills create a significant mediation impact on therelationship between the mean years of schooling and democratic development level. Also significant is the indirectimpact of the nations’ mean years of schooling on their democratic development levels. Countries seeking to sustainand protect participative and deep democracy may need to review their formal and informal education policies. Therefore, it may be especially necessary to attach greater importance to cognitive-verbal processes in formaleducation institutions as a departure point of action.

This study aims to determine the relationship between social media and the argumentative paragraph writing skill of Politeknik Negeri Batam students. This study employs a descriptive method, with 70 students as the research subjects. In this study, students were asked to do a practice in the form of writing an argumentative paragraph. An analysis from the obtained data is then conducted to find out their mastery in composing a paragraph. As the basis for the assessment, scores in unity, coherence, and development aspect were assigned to each paragraph. These three aspects were then collected and summed up to find the mean of the data, which had been grouped and assigned score before, to determine their mastery level in writing an argumentative paragraph. Subsequently, the data were inserted into a table. Based on the table, which recapitulates the mastery level in writing an argumentative paragraph, the results are as follows: 43 % of the students have a high level of mastery, with 58 % of them having access to social media; 37 % of the students are in the medium level of mastery, with 28 % of them having access to social media; 20 % is in the low level of mastery, with 13 % of them having access to social media. The results of this study show that students who are active in social media have the ability to write a good argumentative paragraph. This might be due to the fact that activities in social media enhance their writing skill, which is closely related to the four aspects of language competencies, which consist of observing, reading, listening, and writing.

In the past, when most computers were workplace tools, researchers in the field of HCI predominately focused on practical aspects of computing, such as usability and efficiency. Now, with more and more computer technologies entering the home and other areas of life, such as schooling and informal education, an increasing number of researchers are exploring subjective issues related to computing. This research explored the relationship between visual complexity, aesthetics and learning motivation with respect to children's learning websites. It took the form of an experiment involving children aged 10 to 11 years-old viewing homepages designed for them. In the experiment, the children were divided into three groups. One group was shown homepages of a low level of visual complexity, another group was shown homepages of a medium level of visual complexity and another group was shown homepages of a high level of visual complexity. At the end of the experiment, the children were asked questions about the homepages; the questions were on the topics of aesthetics and motivation. In addition to exploring the relationship between visual complexity, aesthetics and learning motivation, the research tested Berylne's theory of preference: a theory that purports that people prefer medium level stimuli to high or low-level stimuli. The results of the experiment showed that children preferred aesthetics of a medium level of visual complexity, Berlyne's theory was thus supported. The results also revealed that aesthetic preference and learning motivation were correlated. These findings have implications for designers of children's learning websites as they suggest that by manipulating visual complexity, a user's viewing pleasure can be enhanced or depreciated.

AbstractThe distribution of lesser maple spanworm, Itame pustularia (Gn.) (Lepidoptera: Geometridae) larvae in red maple, Acer rubrum L., crowns and of pupae under these trees, and the relationship between the number of shoots on these trees and several easily-measured tree dimensions are used to design sampling techniques for estimating the mean number of larvae per shoot and the mean number of pupae per unit area in epidemic populations. An estimate of the total number of larvae per unit area is obtained from the product of larval density and the number of shoots per unit area. Some indication of how this latter estimate might be obtained is discussed. Because of the strong relationship between stem diameter and the number of shoots on a tree, a double sample procedure can be designed based on shoot counts from a relatively small number of trees. Auxiliary measurements on a large number of trees can improve the precision of the estimate.

This research is designed to determine the relationship between English teachers’ effectiveness and students’ English proficiency at Selected Colleges in Dili, East Timor, as input for enhancement programs. The English teachers’ effectiveness consist of three aspects namely (1) English Proficiency, (2) Pedagogical Knowledge, and (3) Socio-Affective Skills. Meanwhile, the students’ English proficiency was measured in terms of the following aspects: (1) Listening, (2) Writing, (3) Reading, and (4) Speaking. The collected data is analyzed by using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences whereby charts, figures and tables were used to present the findings. The overall mean for English Teachers’ Effectiveness is 3.64, interpreted as effective. This implies that English Teachers at Selected Colleges demonstrate the effectiveness required of them, but it is in Socio-Affective Skills that they are performing best. The overall mean for Student Respondents’ Level of English Proficiency is 3.85, interpreted as good. Observing closely, the mean score of speaking which is 3.51 is close to “Average” (down) because in the Range of Mean Values of 2.51 - 3.50 is Average. The results of the Pearson Correlation showed that all independent variables on English teachers’ effectiveness are correlated with the dependent variable on students’ English proficiency. The correlation coefficient values are between of ± 0.50 to ± 0.74, which means “High or Strong Relationship”. Based on a reasonable output of this study, the researcher proposed training programs to enhance the English teachers’ effectiveness and students’ English proficiency in Selected Colleges in Dili, East Timor.

Abstract ContextEach year, millions of reptile skins are commercially exported from Southeast Asia for exotic leathers. Quotas are commonly used to regulate this trade, but quotas are sometimes exceeded and do little to ensure harvest sustainability. AimsTo explore the relationship between the size of live pythons and their skins, and to assess whether skin measurements can be used to enforce the application of limits on the size of harvested snakes. MethodsWe measured the body size of three heavily harvested python species (Malayopython reticulatus, Python breitensteini and Python brongersmai) in Indonesia and Malaysia and examined the relationship with skin length, skin width, the size of the ventral scale and its adjacent dorsal scale. Key resultsMeasurements of 2261 pythons showed strong relationships between the size of live pythons and measurements made on their skins. Skins can be stretched 30% longer than the body length of snakes from which they came and inter-facility and country differences in stretching technique result in different relationships between the sizes of live snakes and the measurements made on their skins. Male and female Malayopython reticulatus differed in their skin dimensions relative to the size of the live snake, but these differences were minor. ConclusionsDespite variations in stretching techniques, in functional terms, this variation is minor (maximum 3.5% relative to each mean measurement) and does not limit application of skin sizes for regulating trade within an acceptable level of error. However, differences in the stretched length of Indonesian and Malaysian skins were much greater (5.9% of the mean length of skins), and, thus, each country should apply its own limits and predictive tools. ImplicationsThe strong relationship between the skin size and the size of the live snake offers great potential for regulating trade by using skin-size limits. Inspection of the size of skins can be used to enforce harvest-size limits and focus harvesting away from sexes and life stages most critical for population persistence. This management tool has numerous advantages over current regulatory practices (quotas) and should be considered for management of trade in Asian reptile skins.

Transection of both median and ulnar nerves provides an objective model to compare sensory and functional recovery. 22 patients were evaluated after nerve repair. The mean age was 30 years and the mean time since surgery 80 months. Primary direct suture was performed in 15 patients and six grafts were necessary. Median nerve suture and ulnar nerve graft were combined in one case. Both sensory and functional evaluation were completed. Statistical evaluation analyzed the relationship between age, injury location, mechanism, type of rehabilitation and the result, and the relationship between two-point discrimination distance (2-PD) and the functional score. According to the S0 to S4 grading, only 26.5% (ulnar) and 31% (median) of direct suture cases achieved S3+ or more. All nerve grafts in adults were poor. A strong relationship was found between two-point discrimination distance (moving and static) and the functional result, even after multivariate analysis. A modification of the Medical Research Council’s classification is suggested.
