In this paper the author investigates the periodical variations of the winds, rain and temperature, corresponding to the conditions of the moon’s declination, in a manner similar to that he has already followed in the case of the barometrical variations, on a period of years extending from 1815 to 1832 inclusive. In each case he gives tables of the average quantities for each week, at the middle of which the moon is in the equator, or else has either attained its maximum north or south declination. He thus finds that a north-east wind is most promoted by the constant solar influence which causes it, when the moon is about the equator, going from north to south; that a south-east wind, in like manner, prevails most when the moon is proceeding to acquire a southern declination ; that winds from the south and west blow more when the moon is in her mean degrees of declination, going either way, than with a full north or south declination ; and that a north-west wind, the common summer and fair weather wind of the climate, affects, in like manner, the mean declination, in either direction, in preference to the north or south, and most when the moon is coming north. He finds the average annual depth of rain, falling in the neighbourhood of London, is 25’17 inches.

Introduction: Stroke is one of the leading causes of death and disability worldwide. The ambulance service is often the first medical service to reach an acute stroke patient, and due to the time-critical nature of stroke, a time-critical assessment and rapid transport to a hyper acute stroke unit are essential. As stroke services have been centralised, different hospitals have implemented different pre-alert admission policies that may affect the on-scene time of the attending ambulance crew. The aim of this study is to investigate if the different pre-alert admission policies affect time on scene.Method: The current study is a retrospective quantitative observational study using data routinely collected by North East Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust. The time on scene was divided into two variables; group one was a telephone pre-alert in which a telephone discussion with the receiving hospital is required before they accept admission of the patient. Group two was a radio-style pre-alert in which the attending clinician makes an autonomous decision on the receiving hospital and alerts them via a short radio message of the incoming patient. These times were then compared to identify if there was any difference between them.Results: Data on 927 patients over a three-month period, from October to December 2019, who had received the full stroke bundle of care, were within the thrombolysis window and recorded as a stroke by the attending clinician, were split into the variable groups and reported on. The mean time on scene for a telephone call pre-alert was 33 minutes and 19 seconds, with a standard deviation of 13 minutes and 8 seconds. The mean on-scene time for a radio pre-alert was 28 minutes and 24 seconds, with a standard deviation of 11 minutes and 51 seconds.Conclusion: A pre-alert given via radio instead of via telephone is shown to have a mean time saving of 4 minutes and 55 seconds, representing an important decrease in time which could be beneficial to patients.

Purpose of the study: The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of student ability levels on the average value (x̄) of academic achievement of students in geography and the influence of method interactions and abilities on the average achievement score (x̄) of students in geography Methodology: The research design for the study was Quasi-experimental. Niger is one of the 36 States in Nigeria, the state is bordered by Zamfara State in the North, Kebbi State and Benin Republic in North West, Kaduna State in           the North East, In the South it is bordered by Kogi State, South West by Kwara State and South East by Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja (Source: Geography Department FUT, Minna and Ministry of Land and Survey-Niger State, Minna). Main Findings: High ability level students had higher mean (x̄) achievement score that the low ability level students Also there is a significant difference between the mean (x̄) the achievement scores of low and high ability level students. Low ability level students who were taught geography using BLM had higher mean gain achievement score than the low ability level students taught using lecture methods while the high level ability students who were taught using BLM had higher mean gain achievement score than the high ability students taught using lecture method. It was further revealed that there is no significant interaction effect of method and ability level on the mean achievement scores in Geography.

AbstractMinerals and metals are of uttermost importance in our society, and mineral resources on and beneath the deep ocean floor represent a huge potential. Deciding whether mining from the deep ocean floor is financially, environmentally and technologically feasible requires information. Due to great depths and harsh conditions, this information is expensive and time and resource consuming to obtain. It is therefore important to use every piece of data in an optimum way. In this study, data retrieved from images and expert knowledge were used to estimate minimum and maximum nodule abundances at image locations from an area in the Clarion-Clipperton-Zone of the equatorial North East Pacific. From the minimum and maximum values, box cores and the spatial correlation quantified through variogram, a conditional expectation and associated uncertainty were obtained through the Gibbs sampler. The conditional expectation and the uncertainty were used with the assumed certain abundance data from the box cores in a kriging exercise to obtain better informed estimates of the block by block abundance. The quality assessment of the estimations was done based on distance criterion and on kriging quality indicators like the slope of regression and the weight of the mean. From the original image locations, alternative image configurations were tested, and it was shown that such alternatives produce better estimates, without extra costs. Future improvements will focus on improving the estimation of the minimum and the maximum values at image locations.

AbstractThe loss of tropical forests and associated biodiversity is a global concern. Conservation efforts in tropical countries such as India have mostly focused on state-administered protected areas despite the existence of vast tracts of forest outside these areas. We studied hornbills (Bucerotidae), an ecologically important vertebrate group and a flagship for tropical forest conservation, to assess the importance of forests outside protected areas in Arunachal Pradesh, north-east India. We conducted a state-wide survey to record encounters with hornbills in seven protected areas, six state-managed reserved forests and six community-managed unclassed forests. We estimated the density of hornbills in one protected area, four reserved forests and two unclassed forests in eastern Arunachal Pradesh. The state-wide survey showed that the mean rate of encounter of rufous-necked hornbills Aceros nipalensis was four times higher in protected areas than in reserved forests and 22 times higher in protected areas than in unclassed forests. The mean rate of encounter of wreathed hornbills Rhyticeros undulatus was twice as high in protected areas as in reserved forests and eight times higher in protected areas than in unclassed forests. The densities of rufous-necked hornbill were higher inside protected areas, whereas the densities of great hornbill Buceros bicornis and wreathed hornbill were similar inside and outside protected areas. Key informant surveys revealed possible extirpation of some hornbill species at sites in two protected areas and three unclassed forests. These results highlight a paradoxical situation where individual populations of hornbills are being lost even in some legally protected habitat, whereas they continue to persist over most of the landscape. Better protection within protected areas and creative community-based conservation efforts elsewhere are necessary to maintain hornbill populations in this biodiversity-rich region.

Radio-telemetry was used to monitor movements and burrow usage by O. anatinus living in the Yarra River catchment, about 20 km east-north-east of the central business district of Melbourne, Victoria. The home ranges of six adult or subadult animals were 2.9–7.3 km (mean ± s.d. = 4.6 ± 1.6 km) long, with individuals travelling up to 10.4 km (males) and 4.0 km (females) in a single overnight period. The mean home-range length of adult/subadult animals was significantly greater than that of juveniles (1.4–1.7 km, mean ± s.d. = 1.55 ± 0.2 km, n = 2). The animals utilised two drainage channels as well as 11.8 km of natural waterways, including the Yarra River (5 km), Mullum Mullum Creek (4 km) and Diamond Creek (2.8 km). Several animals travelled repeatedly below one-lane and two-lane bridges, confirming that these structures are not inherent barriers to platypus movement. In total, 57 platypus burrows were described, including 26 along the river, 29 along the creeks and 2 along drains. The horizontal distance from the water’s edge to burrow chambers was 0.4–3.7 m (mean ± s.d. = 1.5 ± 0.9 m, n = 41), with burrows found only in banks extending ≥ 0.5 m above the water. Platypus burrows occurred significantly more often than expected along undercut banks and in association with moderate-to-dense vegetation overhanging the water, and significantly less often at sites where banks had a convex profile at water level. As well, the amount of cover provided along the bank by shrubs/small trees and the ground layer of vegetation was significantly greater than expected at platypus burrows along the river. These attributes are believed to help conceal burrow entrances from predators as well as reduce burrow damage through erosion.

Abstract. Atmospheric CO in-situ measurements are carried out at the Izaña (Tenerife) global GAW mountain station using a RGA (Reduction Gas Analyser). In-situ measurements at Izaña are representative of the subtropical North-East Atlantic free troposphere, specially during the night period. We present the measurement system configuration, the response function, the calibration scheme, the data processing, the Izaña's 2008–2011 CO nocturnal time series, and the mean diurnal cycle by months. We have developed a rigorous uncertainty analysis for carbon monoxide measurements carried out at the Izaña station which could be applied to other GAW stations. We determine the combined standard uncertainty from four components of the measurement: uncertainty of the WMO standard gases interpolated over the range of measurement, the uncertainty that takes into account the agreement between the standard gases and the response function used, the uncertainty due to the repeatability of the injections, and the propagated uncertainty related to the response function parameters uncertainties (which also takes into account the covariance between the parameters). The mean value of the combined standard uncertainty decreased significantly after March 2009, from 2.37 nmol mol−1 to 1.66 nmol mol−1, due to improvements in the measurement system. A fifth type of uncertainty we call representation uncertainty is considered when some of the data necessary to compute exactly the mean are absent. Any computed mean has also a propagated uncertainty arising from the uncertainties of the data used to compute the mean. The law of propagation depends on the type of uncertainty component (random or systematic). In-situ hourly means are compared with simultaneous and collocated NOAA flask samples. The uncertainty in the differences is determined and whether these are significant. For 2009–2011, only 24.5% of the differences are significant, and 68% of the differences are between −2.39 and 2.5 nmol mol−1. Total and annual mean differences are computed using conventional expressions but also expressions with weights based on the minimum variance method. The annual mean differences for 2009–2011 are well within the ±2 nmol mol−1 compatibility goal of GAW.

ObjectiveTo determine if the presence or absence of sonographic sliding sign preoperatively is a good predictor of the presence and type of intra-abdominal adhesions; and to determine the time taken to demonstrate this sign.DesignA prospective, observational, triple-blind study using tests of diagnostic accuracy.SettingSingle-centre tertiary health institution in north-east Nigeria.Participants67 women in the third trimester scheduled for repeat elective caesarean sections (CS) had transabdominal sonography to determine the absence or presence and degree of sliding sign. The time taken to make these decisions were noted. Surgeons blinded to the ultrasound findings graded adhesions intraoperatively and comparison between sonographic and intraoperative findings made. Women who were scheduled for emergency CS were excluded.Main outcome measuresAccuracy of preoperative ultrasound to determine no/mild, moderate and severe adhesions. Secondary outcomes were interobserver correlations and time taken to determine sliding.ResultsWhen classified as adhesion and no adhesion, the sliding sign demonstrated a sensitivity of 100.00% (CI95 85.18% to 100.00%), specificity of 100.00% (CI95 92.13% to 100.00%). In predicting presence of moderate intra-abdominal adhesions, a sensitivity of 65.0% (CI95 40.78% to 84.61%) and specificity of 82.98% (CI95 69.19% to 92.35%) was found. For predicting severe intra-abdominal adhesions, it had a sensitivity of 25.00% (CI95 0.63% to 80.59%) and specificity of 98.41 (CI95 91.47 to 99.96). Disease prevalence for mild, moderate and severe adhesions was 33.82% (CI95 22.79% to 46.32%), 29.85% (CI95 19.28% to 42.27%) and 5.97% (CI95 1.65% to 14.59%), respectively. Interobserver Cohen’s kappa coefficient and PPA were 0.58 (CI95 0.39 to 0.76) and 58.82 (CI95 52.82 to 64.82), respectively. The mean duration to determine sliding sign was 7.56±2.86 s.ConclusionThis study supports the role of transabdominal sliding sign in preoperative prediction of intra-abdominal adhesions in women with previous CS without significant increase in sonography duration. This information can encourage planning for CS by ensuring that surgeons of appropriate seniority are deployed to undertake anticipated complex operations.

BACKGROUND Assam is in the North East of India. The earliest inhabitants of Assam were people who came from Southeast Asia. The ethnic communities constitute about 12 to 13 percent of the state population. The present study was undertaken to evaluate the carrying angle of the elbow in ethnic Assamese community. METHODS The study was conducted in the Department of Anatomy, Tezpur Medical College. Out of 225 students admitted in first semester M.B.B.S. in two consecutive years in Tezpur Medical College, 20 students belonged to different ethnic communities of Assam. The carrying angle of both the right and left upper limbs were measured in the twenty selected students. Evaluation was done following all legal formalities. RESULTS The mean carrying angle in males was 10.33 + / - 1.56 in the right limb and 12.11 + / - 1.72 in the left limb; in the females it was 11.73 + / - 2.73 on the right side and 11.45 + / - 3.26 degree on the left side. CONCLUSIONS The study was done to find the carrying angle of the elbow in the ethnic Assamese community. The results of this study will be of help in the diagnosis and treatment of deformity and injury around the elbow. KEYWORDS Carrying Angle, Elbow, Ethnic Assamese Community
