This study aimed at examining the effect of an employee's sense of psychological well-being at work and the quality of social work relationships (the relationship between colleagues and the relationship with superiors) on the level of job commitment; the study was conducted on 80 police officers working in the Police College (Qatar), four measures were used to measure study variables. The regression analysis results indicated a positive correlation between the sense of psychological well-being at work and career commitment to the high level of social relations at work. Note that this study makes a set of significant contributions to the Arab work environment, whether at the theory or practice level. The study's most important results indicate the necessity of giving social work relations the appropriate attention, given its significant role in several organizational and individual outputs, which departments are rarely interested in.

PurposeThe evaluation of emotional management in police environments has impacts on their health and on their interventions (Monier, 2014; Van Hoorebeke, 2003). There are significant costs related to occupational diseases in the police force: absenteeism, turnover, deterioration of the work climate (Al Ali et al., 2012). Considering that policing involves a high level of emotional control and management (Monier, 2014; Al Ali et al., 2012; Dar, 2011) and that no study has yet examined the relationship between police officers’ emotional competencies and their psychological health at work (PHW), the purpose of this paper is to explore the relationship and influence of emotional self-efficacy (ESE) on PHW in policing.Design/methodology/approachPHW results from psychological distress at work (PDW) (irritability, anxiety, disengagement) and psychological well-being at work (PWBW) (social harmony, serenity and commitment at work) (Gilbertet al., 2011). ESE is defined as the individual’s belief in his or her own emotional skills and effectiveness in producing desired results (Bandura, 1997), conceptualized through seven emotional skills: the use of emotions; the perception of one’s own emotions and that of others; the understanding of one’s emotions and that of others; and the management of one’s emotions and that of others (Deschênes et al., 2016). A correlational estimate was used with a sample of 990 employed police officers, 26 percent of whom were under 34 years of age and 74 percent over 35. The ESE scales (a=0.97) of Deschênes et al. (2018) and Gilbertet al.(2011) on PWBW (a=0.91) and PDW (a=0.94) are used to measure the concepts under study.FindingsThe results of the regression analyses confirm links between police officers’ emotional skills and PHW. The results show that self-efficacy in managing emotions, self-efficacy in managing emotions that others feel, self-efficacy in using emotions and self-efficacy in understanding emotions partially explain PWBW (R2=0.30,p<0.001). On the other hand, self-efficacy in perceiving the emotions that others feel, self-efficacy in using emotions and self-efficacy in managing emotions partially explain PDW (R2=0.30,p<0.001).Originality/valueThis study provided an understanding of the correlation between police officers’ feelings of ESE and their PHW, particularly with PWBW. Beyond the innovation and theoretical contribution of such a study on the police environment, the results reveal the scope of the consideration of emotional skills in this profession.

The results of a comparative empirical study of the psychological well-being of people of elderly age are presented in the article. We tried to test the hypothesis that the psychological well-being of people in elderly age is determined by a number of social factors (involvement in professional activities and the presence of close interpersonal relationships). We tried to determine which components cause a high level of psychological well-being in the elderly age. In the result of the study we found that working respondents have more autonomy than non-working respondents. They have a high degree of responsibility and high self-esteem. They are satisfied with the quality of their lives. The connection between marital status as a factor of close interpersonal relationships and levels of psychological well-being of a people in elderly age was not found. Objective: Many older adults in Indonesia live with their children. This study examined the relationship between the quality of the relationship that elderly parents may have with their children living with them and any effects on psychological well-being. Methods: Relationship quality encompasses positive and negative aspects. This study employed convenience sampling and to reach 102 elderly participants. A measure of positive and negative social exchanges was used to measure the relationship between elderly parents and their children. Ryff’s Scale of Psychological Well-Being was utilized to measure the psychological well-being of the subjects. We used descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation coefficient, an independent t-test, and one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) to assess the statistics produced. Results: The primary results showed no correlation between the positive qualities of the relationship and psychological well-being ( r = 0.092, p > 0.01). However, the negative qualities of the relationship were negatively correlated with psychological well-being ( r = −0.335, p < 0.01). Conclusion: Thus, negative qualities of relationships with their children were found to be more impactful on psychological well-being than positive qualities in elderly parents who maintain coresidence with their children. This means that the greater the lack of sympathy, intrusion, failure to provide needed help, and rejection/neglect from the child, the worse the psychological well-being of the elderly parent.

This study examined the relationship between marriage and psychological well-being using a sample from the National Survey of Families and Households panel data. Eight different marital status groups were identified and used to test two competing perspectives explaining the relationship between marriage and individual psychological well-being (protection vs. selection). Findings confirmed the strong effects of marital status on psychological well-being, supporting the protection perspective. The effect of the quality of marital (cohabiting) relationship on psychological well-being was significant, but the strong effect of marital status remained unchanged after controlling for relationship quality. Findings also indicated that the transition to cohabiting did not have the same beneficial effects as marriage for psychological well-being, suggesting that the protective effects of marriage are greater than those of cohabiting relationships. The selection effects of psychological well-being were found to be weak and inconsistent. The findings generally did not vary by gender.

Kata Kunci: Perilaku Pro-lingkungan, Subjective Well-being ABSTRACT Previous studies found that when individuals can demonstrate behaviors that contribute to nature preservation, it can be said that he has a high level of Subjective Well-being (SWB). It is because the ecological behavior is categorized as positive action which contributes to the emergence of the positive feelings, such as happiness and satisfaction. Vice versa, individual with good SWB found would be able to show pro-environmental behavior as it could improve the quality of their environment which reciprocally promotes their general life-satisfaction. However, study related to SWB and pro-environmental behavior in Indonesia has never been conducted before. Therefore this study aims to determine the relationship between pro-environmental behavior and SWB among Jakarta citizen. This study involved two hundred and nineteen Jakarta’s people aged 20-40 years old with middle socioeconomic status indicated by incomes, which is greater than expenses and saving ability. The results reflected that there was no significant relationship between pro-environmental behavior and SWB (r = 0.075, ρ=0268>0.05). This study provides a different insight into how to change urban society’s behavior to be more concerned about their environment. Findings from this study will be useful for subsequent research, particularly in assessing other factors associated with pro-environmental behavior, as well as designing appropriate interventions to modify their environmental behavior. Keywords: Pro-Environmental Behavior, Subjective Well-Being

This study attempted to unveil correlations among appearance satisfaction, psychological well-being, and interpersonal relationships among college students to contribute to the development of a mental health promotion program. Analysis results found the following: As satisfaction with body image and subjective appearance satisfaction increased, life's purpose also improved. In other words, with a higher appearance satisfaction, psychological well-being increased. Concerning the effects of appearance satisfaction on interpersonal relationships, as satisfaction with body image and appearance satisfaction increased, ‘satisfaction,’ ‘communication,’ and ‘intimacy’ improved, thereby forming positive interpersonal relationships. Regarding the influence of psychological well-being on interpersonal relationships, as psychological well-being improved, there was a greater possibility of maintaining a positive relationship with a good quality of life and a high level of intimacy. This study is meaningful because it confirmed that appearance satisfaction influences psychological well-being and interpersonal relationships in college students. However, this study was performed on students from a certain region only. Therefore, there should be further studies on more extensive populations.
