Despite the advanced medical technology nowadays, breast cancer incidence rate is still increasing worldwide. This is due to females lack of knowledge and awareness about the breast screening. Therefore, the objective of this study is to explore the factors that influence females’ intention towards breast cancer early diagnosis with health belief model and provide practical recommendations. To evaluate the proposed hypotheses in this study, 600 self-administrated questionnaires were distributed to Malaysian female who is 18 years old and above with the usage of non-probable sampling approach (convenience sampling approach). Given that, the findings demonstrate perceived barriers has the greatest impact towards females’ breast cancer early diagnosis intention, followed by perceived severity and perceived susceptibility. The contribution of this study is to evaluate the relationships between perceived severity, perceived susceptibility and perceived barriers towards females’ breast screening intention with the mediating variable of attitude. To support this, health believe model and theory of planned behaviour are employed in this research.

Abstract    More than 90% of cases of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) / Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrom (AIDS) in children, occur due to transmission from mother to child. Prevention of unwanted pregnancies with contraception in HIV positive women is important strategy to reduce the rate of mother to child HIV/AIDS transmission. The practice of contraceptive use in HIV positive women is strongly influenced by individual beliefs regarding the benefits and effectiveness of contraception for the prevention of mother to child HIV/AIDS transmission. This study aims to determine the relationship of perceptions based on the construct of the Health Belief Model (HBM) wich consists of perceived susceptibility, perceived severity, perceived benefit, perceived barrier, self efficacy, and cues to action and based on pluralistic ignorance on the practice of contraceptive use among woman of childbearing age recipients of antiretroviral in Bandung. The design of this study was quantitative non-experimental with survey methods. Data were collected for one month, using questionnaire from 188 women of childbearing age  receiving  antiretroviral drughs taken by consecutive sampling (non-probability) technique. Data were analyzed by logistic regression. The results revealed perceived susceptibility is an HBM construct that affects contraceptive use (Adjusted Odds Ratio (AOR):4.5). While knowledge (AOR:7.3) and age (AOR:0.801), emerged as other factors that influence contraceptive use among WUS recipients of antiretroviral in Bandung. The HBM is used to predict contraceptive behavior in women. HIV positive women who believe themselves to be at high risk of infecting HIV/AIDS from mother to child will tend to use contraception, besides that knowledge is the basis for HIV positive women taking action to use contraception.

Background: Southeast Asian countries have long been considered epidemic areas for mosquito-borne diseases (MBDs), and most imported cases of infectious diseases in Taiwan are from these areas. Taiwanese migrant workers are mainly of Southeast Asian nationality, and of these, 22% are Filipino. Migrant workers’ knowledge of MBDs and self-protection behaviors are beneficial to disease prevention and treatment. This study aims to understand the effectiveness of a health education intervention (HEI) for Filipino migrant workers in Taiwan and explores the factors affecting preventive practices. Methods: The study was conducted between May to September 2018. Participants were recruited from two Catholic churches in Taichung City. A professional delivered a 30 min HEI in person, and a structured questionnaire was used to acquire and assess participants’ knowledge, health beliefs, and preventive behaviors for MBDs before and after the intervention. Results: A total of 291 participants were recruited. The intervention program showed a positive impact on the migrant worker’s knowledge and the perceived severity, perceived benefits, perceived barriers, and preventive practices. Knowledge, perceived severity, and perceived barriers were factors influencing preventive practices in Filipino migrant workers. Conclusions: The results of this study demonstrated that we can direct our efforts towards three areas: improving foreign migrant workers’ awareness of diseases, emphasizing the severity of the disease, and eliminating possible hindrances in the future. As one example, migrant workers could be proactively provided with routine medical examinations and multilingual health education lectures to improve knowledge and preventive practices to contain the spread MBDs.

Background. Breast cancer has become one of the most prevalent causes of mortality among Indonesian women. Better prognosis of breast cancer will be achieved if it is diagnosed in an earlier stage, thus efforts to detect breast cancer earlier are important. Breast Self-Examination (BSE) is considered as an important first step to encourage women to actively be responsible for their own health, especially for women in developing countries with limited resources and access to other forms of preventive healthcare. The present study aimed to predict BSE behavior among women in Surabaya, Indonesia using the HBM. Methods. This investigation was a cross-sectional survey which was distributed among 1,967 women aged 20-60 years. The Indonesian version of Champion’s Health Belief Model Scale (I-CHBMS) was used to explain self-reported BSE practice. Logistic regression analysis was used to examine the association of HBM variables with BSE practice. Results Almost half of the sample (44.4%) had performed BSE. Further, the results indicated that the HBM variables were significantly associated with BSE practice. Specifically, higher perceived benefits and self-efficacy, lower perceived barriers and less cues to action were unique correlates of BSE behavior. The result also showed that perceived severity and susceptibility were not associated with BSE behavior. Conclusion. This study indicated that several HBM constructs significantly associated with BSE behavior among Indonesian women, suggesting that BSE health education programs should emphasize the perceived benefits of BSE, focus on increasing women’s self-efficacy to address and overcome perceived barriers in performing BSE, and help them in identifying personally relevant cues to action.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine if providing mass casualty training, utilizing the Bleeding Control for the Injured (B-Con) course would allow participants to feel more confident to provide bystander aid to wounded victims in a mass casualty incident (MCI).Design: Quasi-experimental pre-post intervention study.Setting: Participants were healthcare providers attending a trauma research conference hosted by a medical university.Interventions: Participants were given a group lecture in each of the three B-Con skill areas. These include: bleeding control with a tourniquet, bleeding control with gauze, and airway control with a jaw thrust. Participants were then divided into three groups and practiced each skill with instruction from B-Con certified trainers.Main outcomes measures: The primary outcome was scores from pre- to post-intervention in the categories of self-efficacy, perceived benefit, perceived susceptibility, perceived barriers, and perceived severity related to involvement in an MCI.Results: The study included 67 participants, all identifying as medical providers. Means in the categories of self-efficacy, perceived benefit, perceived susceptibility, perceived barriers, and perceived severity significantly increased from pre-intervention to postintervention among the paired variables. Conclusions: This study demonstrates the effectiveness of B-Con training in improving the confidence of participants. By increasing the number of persons who are trained for an MCI, there will be an increased probability that triage and immediate care will be rendered when needed. Future research needs to be completed evaluating the effect of training on a layperson study sample.

Abstract Background Early diagnosis is a key determinant of breast cancer prognosis and survival. More than half of breast cancer cases are diagnosed at an advanced stage in Ethiopia, and the barriers to early diagnosis in this country are not well understood. We aimed to identify the perceived barriers to early diagnosis of breast cancer from the perspective of patients and health care providers in south and southwestern Ethiopia. Methods A qualitative study was conducted from March to April 2018 using in-depth interviews of breast cancer patients and breast cancer health care providers from six public hospitals located in urban and rural areas of south and southwestern Ethiopia. All participants proved verbal consent before participating. A thematic analysis was performed using Open Code 4.02. Results Twelve breast cancer patients and thirteen health care providers were included in the study. Patient and health-system related barriers to early diagnosis of breast cancer were identified. Patient-related barriers were lack of knowledge and awareness of breast cancer, belief in traditional medicine and religious practices for treatment, and lack of social and financial support to seek care at a medical facility. Health-system related barriers were misdiagnosis of breast cancer, long distance to referral facilities, high cost of diagnostic services, long waiting time for diagnostic tests, and lack of screening and diagnostic tests in local facilities. Conclusions Early diagnosis of breast cancer is affected by multiple barriers in south and southwestern Ethiopia. Awareness campaigns and education about the disease, prevention, and early detection are needed to increase early diagnosis of breast cancer. Opportunities exist to improve early diagnosis and timely treatment in rural areas.
