OBJECTIVE/BACKGROUND: This research objective was to examine the effect of music intervention on perceived stress among English education students. METHOD: Out of 200 students surveyed, 56 English education undergraduate students who were having high-stress level participated in the study. The 56 eligible participants were randomized into one of two study groups: music intervention group (n = 28) and waitlist control group (n = 28) using computer-generated random numbers. All participants completed baseline evaluation and posttests at 4, 8 and 12 weeks. Participants completed the Perceived Stress Scale. The statistical tool used for data analysis was within and between ANOVA. RESULT: There was a significant difference in perceived stress between English education students in the music intervention group and waitlisted group. Significant reduction in the level of perceived stress among English education students was observed in the music intervention group, but the waitlisted group demonstrated no significant reduction in their stress score both at 4, 8 and 12 weeks posttests respectively. CONCLUSION: Music intervention is an effective means of handling stress among English education students. Further studies are required to investigate the role of music therapy in burnout reduction among English education students in Nigerian universities.

Background: Surgery is one of medical interventions which can cause fear, anxiety, and stressed because of its effects toward the integrity of body and soul. Nurses have significant roles in any preoperative care which is helping patients to decrease preoperative anxiety by using complementary therapy. The use of music therapy as one of the complementary therapies is not common in Indonesia. Therefore, scientific studies to prove the role of this therapy to decrease the level of anxiety of pre-operative patients is needed. Objective: To investigate the effects of music therapy in reducing anxiety levels of preoperative patients. Methods: A quasy experimental study with pre-test and post-test design with control group was applied to 50 respondents from medical ward in Panembahan Senopati Hospital of Yogyakarta who met the inclusion criteria.Dara were then analyzed by using t-test statistical analysis. Results: The control group showed the increased value of anxiety level of0.8 without music intervention (t= - 1503, df = 24, p<.05), whereas the intervention group showed the decreased value of anxiety level of -5.52 (t=5.081, df=24, p<.05). Meanwhile the independent t-test results for both groups showed a significant difference between group (t= 3,373, df=48, p<.05). Conclusion: Music therapy has significant effect in reducing preoperative anxiety levels of patients. Keywords: anxiety, preoperative, music therapy

Introduction: Breast cancer is common among women and reduces their quality of life. The current study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of mindfulness-based stress reduction group counseling in alleviating psychological responses such as anxiety, depression, stress, and regulating laboratory tests including cortisol and C-reactive protein (CRP) in women with breast cancer. Methods: This randomized clinical trial was conducted based on convenience sampling. Participants were divided into 2 groups (control and intervention groups) with block randomization. The intervention group received mindfulness-based stress reduction group counseling during 8 weeks. The participants completed the Beck anxiety inventory, Beck-II depression inventory, and perceived stress scale before and after the intervention and their blood samples were taken to check their cortisol and CRP. Results: After the intervention, the MBSR group had significantly lower anxiety compared with the control group ( P < .001). No significant difference was found between the 2 groups in the reduction of perceived stress and depression ( P < .05). In addition, no significant difference was found between the 2 groups in CRP and cortisol levels after the intervention ( P > .05). Conclusion: The present study showed the effectiveness of mindfulness-based cognitive therapy in improving anxiety rather than the stress, depression, and inflammatory laboratory factors such as cortisol and CRP in women with breast cancer. Therefore, the psychological symptoms of these patients can be improved at different stages of treatment by providing this type of training.

AbstractBackground and objectivesTonsillectomy is one of the most commonly used pediatric surgeries with high stress levels for children and their parents. The present study was designed and implemented regarding the fact that limited studies have ever been carried out about the effects of complementary therapies such as acupressure on the preoperative anxiety levels in children throughout the world.Materials and methodsPresent study was a randomized clinical trial that was done in three groups with 144 children aged 5–12 years undergoing tonsillectomy. In present study, the children were allocated in three groups: intervention, control and sham. In the intervention group, the acupressure was applied on the Yintang point and in the sham group, was applied at a sham acupoint. No intervention was performed in the control group. Before and after intervention, the pediatric anxiety levels were measured using instruments. The results were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics such as the Kruskal-Wallis and Wilcoxon tests, chi-square (χ2) and analysis of variance (ANOVA) test. The significance level was considered p < 0.05.ResultsThe total anxiety score in children was (70.39 ± 20.93) in the control group, (67.83 ± 16.78) in the intervention group and (71.40 ± 21.82) in the sham group, not significant difference (p > 0.05). The different in the overall anxiety score among children before intervention compare to after intervention was as following: Control group (–3 ± 17.46), intervention group (8.42 ± 32.98) and sham group (–4.32 ± 24.47).ConclusionLike other surgical procedures, the tonsillectomy has serious stress for children. Our study demonstrates that the acupressure has a significant effect on the level of preoperative anxiety in children undergoing surgery. Therefore, nurses can use this technique to reduce the pediatric anxiety.

Introduction: Pediatric obesity is an increasingly prevalent problem. Several studies have examined prevention and treatment strategies. The majority of effective studies involved school or community interventions. With health care becoming more collaborative, we hypothesized that a behavioral health specialist may be effective in executing multifaceted interventions with families of at-risk patients. Methods: This is a prospective randomized study, evaluating impact of intervention with a behavioral specialist on lifestyle risk factors for pediatric obesity in children. At-risk behaviors were identified with a screening tool from the Healthy Kids, Healthy Michigan Clinical Decision Tools, based on the 2007 American Academy of Pediatrics guidelines on pediatric obesity. An intervention group received ongoing care from the behavioral specialist over three months, including motivational interviewing and cognitive behavioral therapy. Participants were compared with a control group receiving usual care. Results: There was no significant difference between the intervention and control group regarding change in number of risk factors. However, both groups had a reduced number of risk factors at follow-up. The control group had a significant change in number of risk factors after the intervention. Conclusion: There was no statistically significant difference between the two groups. However, it is notable that both groups saw significant decreases in total number of risk factors. The only addition to usual care provided to the control group was use of the screening tool. Our results indicate that the use of a screening tool and brief physician intervention may be an effective means for improving healthy behaviors within families.

Patients with diabetes mellitus have a high-stress level, this is because the treatment isundertaken such as diet, blood sugar control, drug consumption, and exercise. In addition, the risk of diseasecomplications that can be experienced by patients will also increase stress. Spiritual mindfulness based on bensonrelaxation affects the formation of positive cognitive (perception) responses in the brain. A good stress perceptionwill stimulate the hypothalamus to release a series of hormones that cause modulation of the physiological barrierof the immune response by decreasing the activation of the HPA axis and increasing activation of theparasympathetic nerve through the vagal stimulation. The purpose of this study was to prove the influence of spiritualmindfulness based on Benson relaxation in reducing stress levels of type 2 diabetes mellitus. This study was aquasi-experimental study using the pretest-posttest with control group design method. Respondents in this studywere 60 type 2 DM sufferers and were taken by simple random sampling technique and divided into two groupsnamely the intervention group and the control group. Stress level data is obtained using a questionnairemeasurement tool. The intervention group was given spiritual mindfulness based on Benson relaxation for fourweeks. The results of data analysis using t-Test with a significance of p <0.05. The stress level test results showeda significant difference between the intervention group and the control group with p-value = 0,000. Mindfulnessspiritual intervention based on Benson relaxation is effective against stress levels of people with type 2 diabetes.

Background: Anxiety is commonly experienced during the delivery process and has been shown to have adverse effects on maternal and infant health outcomes. Music interventions tend to mitigate the effects of anxiety in a variety of populations, are low-cost and easily accessible, and have high acceptability. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of music intervention on expectant mothers’ vital signs and anxiety levels during cesarean section. Methods: This study is a single-center, controlled, randomized study. The women in the intervention group listened to music via earpieces during the operation. The control group received standard treatment without music. Cesarean section was performed under regional anesthesia. The State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) was administered to the patients before and after the operation. Results: There was no significant difference between the pre- and postoperative systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, heart rate, respiratory rate, or O2 saturation parameters of the music group and the control group (p>0.05). The pre-operative STAI anxiety score was similar in the music (45.58±4.60) and control (43.82±4.33) groups (p=0.183). After the operation, the anxiety score of the music group (35.88±5.39) was found to be statistically significantly lower than the anxiety score of the control group (42.14±3.75) (p<0.001). Conclusion: This study supports the hypothesis that slow, rhythmic Sufi music during cesarean section can reduce patients’ anxiety. It is possible to distract the patient from negative thoughts and reduce stress. The results show that patients who listened to music during surgery had significantly lower anxiety levels than patients who did not listen to music.

Abstract Background Pregnancy is a challenging period for mothers and fathers. This study aimed to investigate the effect of counseling on stress and anxiety levels of fathers. Methods This randomized controlled trial was conducted on 102 spouses of pregnant women in Ardabil, Iran. The participants were randomly assigned to intervention and control groups. The intervention group attended four 60-min counseling sessions at weekly intervals. The perceived stress and anxiety questionnaires were completed before and 4 weeks after the intervention. Results The mean scores of state anxiety in the intervention group decreased significantly 4 weeks after the intervention compared with the control group (MD: -2.4; 95%CI: − 4.7 to − 0.2; p = 0.030). Four weeks after the intervention, no significant difference was found between the two groups in terms of trait anxiety (p = 0.472) and perceived stress (p = 0.635). Conclusions The findings indicate that counseling reduced state anxiety in expectant fathers; therefore, this intervention is recommended to be used to reduce fathers’ anxiety. Mother-infant attachment is an intimate, lasting and satisfying relationship that leads to better cognitive, emotional and social growth of the infant. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of breastfeeding training by role-play on mother-infant attachment behaviours. This research was a randomised clinical trial (parallel design). Inclusion criteria were: no history of mental disorders; ability to read and write the Persian language to complete the questionnaire; no history of drug and tobacco intake in primigravida women. The sample comprised 100 pregnant women (in 2 groups), selected through simple random sampling at healthcare centres. The researcher reviewed prenatal care registries of selected healthcare centres and extracted the names of pregnant women in their early third trimester. The data were imported into randomisation software. The control group received routine breastfeeding training, while the intervention group received routine training together with training through role-play. The data collection tool was the Maternal Behaviour Inventory Questionnaire. Consequently 75 samples were analysed in SPSS16. Independent t-tests and chi-square tests were used to examine the difference between the two groups. Results showed that the mean score of mother-infant attachment one week after delivery was significantly higher in the intervention group in comparison to that in the control group (p<0.001). No significant difference was observed between the two groups in maternal age, age of marriage, neonatal gender, maternal employment and education, number of parity, and number of abortions (P>0.05). Since breastfeeding training through role-play could affect mother-infant attachment, it is suggested that this type of training should be provided for pregnant women to promote mother-infant attachment and exclusive breastfeeding.
