Purposes: This study identified and compared between the levels and types of stressors as well as coping behaviors. Design: Cross-Sectional Survey Methods: Data were collected using a convenience sample of 286 students Findings: The results showed that ‘‘teachers and nursing staff’ ’and ‘‘assignments and workload’’ were the highest sources of stress among nursing and MLS students. But this was much higher among nursing students. In addition, lack of professional knowledge and skills were cited the least stressors among both students’ groups. Practice Implications: The result can be used to support Nursing student to utilize positive coping mechanism to deal with stress successfully. Enhance academic staff awareness about re-allocation of the academic demands and the emphasis on the benefit of orientation week for the students.

Abstract Objectives To develop a self-report scale to measure academic motivation among nursing students and to test its psychometric properties. Methods a cross-sectional validation study with a convenience sample of nursing students (n=1,635) was performed. The Motivation Nursing Students Scale was developed; content, face, construct validity, hypothesis testing and reliability were evaluated. Results The validity structure revealed a four-factor solution and the model reached a satisfactory fit (χ2=622.835 df=160, p<0.01, CFI=0.90, TLT=0.83, RMSEA=0.060 (90% [CI] 0.055–0.064, p=0.001, SRMR=0.067). The hypothesis testing was confirmed with a positive correlation of the academic self-efficacy with Introjected, Intrinsic motivation and a negative correlation with Amotivation. Conclusions We verified a link between academic self-efficacy and motivation. Both motivation and self-efficacy may increase academic achievement and the possibility for HEIs to degrees a number of students in line with demands.

Objective: To describe Master of Science in Nursing students’ expectations to participate in nursing research-related tasks in daily clinical practice after completing their education.Methods: To support this assumption a descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted to describe Master of Science in nursing students’ expectations to participate in nursing research-related tasks in daily clinical practice after completing their education. Data were collected using a 41-item structured questionnaire.Results: A convenience sample of Master of Science in Nursing students (n = 116) was recruited during their third semester and 92 (79.3%) students replied the questionnaire. The results showed how 91.3% of the students expressed high expectations regarding their possibilities for participation in nursing research-related tasks in clinical practice. However, 64.1% doubted that time and resources would be allocated to nursing research.Conclusions: The key motivator for the students was to improve patient care, further develop clinical practice, and strengthen the nursing profession. However, the literature suggests that colleagues and the nursing management in clinical practice impose certain barriers that prevent nurses from participating in research.

Background Mediterranean nutrition knowledge, healthy eating habits, and subjective nutritional knowledge are crucially important to nursing students’ health. The study strives to examine, during the COVID-19 pandemic period: (a) nursing students' eating habits and their subjective nutritional knowledge according to three groups: novice, advanced, and senior; and (b) subjective knowledge and its role as a mediator between Mediterranean nutritional knowledge and nursing students’ eating habits. Methods A cross-sectional study design with a convenience sample consisting of 212 university nursing students. Participants volunteered to complete a questionnaire that examined their eating habits, subjective nutritional knowledge, and Mediterranean diet knowledge. The university's institutional review board provided permission to conduct the current study. Results Nursing students from the novice group had better eating habits than the advanced and senior groups, and no significant differences were found between the advanced and senior groups regarding eating habits. Additionally, Mediterranean nutritional knowledge had a positive indirect effect on eating habits through subjective nutritional knowledge. Therefore, subjective nutritional knowledge partially mediated the relationship between Mediterranean nutritional knowledge and eating habits. Conclusion First, especially for the advanced and senior groups, it is important to create opportunities for learning via seminars, symposia, and webinars. Interprofessional teams, such as clinical nutritionists or a registered certified dietitian and nursing student, can engage with important, authentic information. Second, since subjective nutritional knowledge was found to be a partial mediator, it may be assumed that there are other mediating variables that we did not examine in this study. Therefore, it is necessary to conduct further research to examine other factors that can serve as mediators for eating habits, in addition to subjective knowledge, especially during COVID-19 times.

Introduction: Nursing students who undergo clinical learning in hospitals frequently communicate with nurses and patients. Communication barriers act as a burden to reach the desired quality of their learning. Previous studies indicate that barriers to communicate with nurses by nursing students are significantly higher compared to patient-related and nursing student-related barriers. This study aimed to describe perceived barriers to communicate with nurses and patients during clinical learning among nursing students of two state universities in Sri Lanka. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted using a convenience sample of 120 nursing students from 2 nd , 3 rd and 4 th years in the University of Sri Jayewardenepura and the Eastern University of Sri Lanka. A previously validated questionnaire, consisting three barrier categories; nurse-related, patient-related and student-related was adapted and pretested for the study. Data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics in SPSS version 23. Results: The majority of participants were females (77.5%). All three barrier categories were perceived as moderate by a majority; 66.7%, 72.5% and 66.6% respectively. Nurse-related barriers had the highest overall mean score (3.31±0.56) compared to patient-related (3.12±0.64) and nursing student-related (3.00±0.68) barriers. The highest mean score (3.91±0.99) was evident for nurses’ negative attitudes towards nursing students, serious disease conditions of patients (3.75±1.03), and language differences (3.34±1.36). Conclusions: The three tested barrier categories were found to be moderate where nurse-related barriers were the highest and nursing student-related barriers were the lowest. The study recommends to provide adequate training on effective communication skills in clinical settings for nursing students. Continuing education programs for nurses should also focus on facilitating student training in clinical settings.Keywords: Clinical learning, Communication barriers, Nursing students, Nurses, Patients

This study aimed to assess nursing students’ attitudes toward mental illness in Saudi Arabia. The research design was cross sectional survey. A convenience sample of 315 nursing students. The attitudes towards patients with mental illness questionnaire (AMI) was employed. The results of analysis found that nursing students had favorable attitudes (social relationships) toward people affected by mental illness. Their AMI1 score was slightly higher than the neutral score 20.82. In addition, the findings suggested that students showed slightly affirmative attitudes of tendency to inform others in case oneself or a close relative being mentally ill. 10.50 was the score of AMI2. Nursing students had favorable attitudes towards mental illness despite having negative stereotyped attitudes toward mental illness.

Abstract Background Large scale physical distancing measures and movement restrictions imposed to contain COVID-19, often referred to as ‘lockdowns’, abruptly and ubiquitously restricted access to routine healthcare services. This study describes reported barriers and coping mechanisms to accessing healthcare among chronic care patients during the nationwide COVID-19 lockdown in Rwanda. Methods This cross-sectional study was conducted among chronic care patients enrolled in pediatric development, HIV/AIDS, non-communicable diseases, mental health, and oncology programs at 3 rural Rwandan districts. Active patients with an appointment scheduled between March–June 2020 and a phone number recorded in the electronic medical record system were eligible. Data were collected by telephone interviews between 23rd April and 11th May 2020, with proxy reporting by caregivers for children and critically ill-patients. Fisher’s exact tests were used to measure associations. Logistic regression analysis was also used to assess factors associated with reporting at least one barrier to accessing healthcare during the lockdown. Results Of 220 patient respondents, 44% reported at least one barrier to accessing healthcare. Barriers included lack of access to emergency care (n = 50; 22.7%), lack of access to medication (n = 44; 20.0%) and skipping clinical appointments (n = 37; 16.8%). Experiencing barriers was associated with the clinical program (p < 0.001), with oncology patients being highly affected (64.5%), and with increasing distance from home to the health facility (p = 0.031). In the adjusted logistic regression model, reporting at least one barrier to accessing healthcare was associated with the patient's clinical program and district of residence. Forty (18.2%) patients identified positive coping mechanisms to ensure continuation of care, such as walking long distances during suspension of public transport (n = 21; 9.6%), contacting clinicians via telephone for guidance or rescheduling appointments (n = 15; 6.8%), and delegating someone else for medication pick-up (n = 6; 2.7%). Of 124 patients who reported no barriers to accessing healthcare, 9% used positive coping mechanisms. Conclusion A large proportion of chronic care patients experienced barriers to accessing healthcare during the COVID-19 lockdown. However, many patients also independently identified positive coping mechanisms to ensure continuation of care - strategies that could be formally adopted by healthcare systems in Rwanda and similar settings to mitigate effects of future lockdowns on patients.

Abstract Background Integrating evidence-based practice (EBP) into the daily practice of healthcare professionals has the potential to improve the practice environment as well as patient outcomes. It is essential for nurses to build their body of knowledge, standardize practice, and improve patient outcomes. This study aims to explore nursing students’ beliefs and implementations of EBP, to examine the differences in students’ beliefs and implementations by prior training of EBP, and to examine the relationship between the same. Methods A cross-sectional survey design was used with a convenience sample of 241 nursing students from two public universities. Students were asked to answer the questions in the Evidence-Based Practice Belief and Implementation scales. Results This study revealed that the students reported a mean total belief score of 54.32 out of 80 (SD = 13.63). However, they reported a much lower implementation score of 25.34 out of 72 (SD = 12.37). Students who received EBP training reported significantly higher total belief and implementation scores than those who did not. Finally, there was no significant relationship between belief and implementation scores (p > .05). Conclusion To advance nursing science, enhance practice for future nurses, and improve patient outcomes, it is critical to teach nursing students not only the value of evidence-based knowledge, but also how to access this knowledge, appraise it, and apply it correctly as needed.

Literature has documented that student nurses undergo stress in their academic and clinical setting. This raises concerns because stress during undergraduate training may result in psychological or emotional impairment during the nurses’ professional life and ultimately affect the quality of patient care. The Objective of the study was to study the prevalence of stress, and the association between sociodemographic factors, stressors and coping strategies with stress. This was a cross-sectional study on 96-year 1-3 nursing students from a government university done between 2015-2018. Bahasa Malaysia translated The General Health Questionnaire, Stressors in Nursing Student Scale Questionnaire and Brief COPE Questionnaire was used in this study. This study had Malay (95.9%) and female (91.7%) dominated population. The prevalence of stress in student nurses was 25%. No association was reported between sociodemographic factors and stress. Among the 4 stressors educational, clinical, confidence and financial, clinical stressor scored the highest mean 6.40 (SD±3.66). Confidence stressor (AOR=1.26 95% CI 1.04-1.53) was the only stressor associated with stress. The top 3 coping strategies practiced by the student nurses were religion (praying), acceptance and planning. Self-blame (AOR 8.18 95% CI 1.86-35.91) was the only coping strategy associated with stress. Stress management programmes, and workshops on stress and coping strategies should be conducted yearly to ensure a well-balanced environment for good learning experiences and prevent stress related health problems and improved academic performance.

PurposeThis study explored Croatian nursing students' knowledge and attitudes regarding brominated flame retardants (BFRs) as indicators of their predisposition to educate future patients. The purpose of the study was to identify knowledge gaps and barriers and to propose possible remedies.Design/methodology/approachThe cross-sectional survey was conducted on a convenience sample of 114 nursing students at undergraduate and graduate levels from three Croatian universities during the winter semester in the academic year 2018–2019. Descriptive and inferential statistical  analyses were performed using STATISTICA 13 software.FindingsSlightly over half of the students (58.49%) were knowledgeable of BFR health effects and 45.28% showed knowledge about its presence in the environment. Only 33.02% of students identified prenatal exposure effects and 24.53% answered correctly about legislative actions. Participants expressed modest interest in the topic (M = 3.15, SD = 1.35). Although informing the public on the health consequences of BFRs was important to them (M = 4.18, SD = 1.03), they did not perceive health-care providers as primarily responsible for communicating that information.Originality/valueThere is a need to enhance related content in the curriculum to improve students' knowledge. Raising students' awareness regarding the role of nurses in clinical and policy arenas is proposed to facilitate active participation in improving environmental health.

Introduction: Nursing students experience higher levels of stress than those in other health-related disciplines; however, there are limited data exploring stress among these students in a Saudi context. Aim: This study examines sources of stress among nursing students at an academic institution in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, using a descriptive quantitative cross-sectional research design. Methods: Data were collected from a convenience sample of 500 undergraduate nursing students, with a response rate of 71.8%, using an adapted Stress in Nursing Students (SINS) questionnaire. Results: Nursing student sources of stress fell into three categories: academic concerns, clinical practice, and social factors. Discussion: The results demonstrate commonality between other countries’ sources of stress for nursing students but highlight cultural factors unique to Saudi Arabia. This study shows opportunities for cross-cultural learning and areas needing cultural tailoring to reduce stress among nursing students.
