The increasing number of recent fraud cases involving the board of directors and top management in cooperative societies has raised concerns about the effectiveness of internal control systems (ICS) in these organizations. This chapter aims to examine the relationship between the effectiveness of the ICS and the likelihood of fraud occurrence by focusing on the control environment, risk assessment, and monitoring activities of cooperative societies in Malaysia. The results showed that the effectiveness of the control environment, risk assessment, and monitoring had no significant relationship with the likelihood of fraud occurrence in these organizations. However, this does not necessarily mean that the fraud risk is not an emerging issue. The study proposes that the internal auditors and audit committee oversee a pro-active fraud prevention check-up, as suggested by the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners (ACFE), which is to be implemented in co-operative societies to assess how vulnerable the organizations are to fraud.

The aim of this study is to assess the effectiveness of the internal control system in the Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA). And, therefore, the specific objectives are to assess the effectiveness of elements of the internal control system in the CUEA, which are control environment, risk assessment, control activities, information and communication activities and monitoring activities. The study used a descriptive research design, and a sample of 53 administrative staffs was selected using a stratified sampling technique. Data collected via questionnaire were analysed by employing a descriptive statistics that contains frequency, percentage, mean and standard deviation. The validity and reliability of the instruments were assured using the piloting and Cronbach Alpha technique. The study found that solely control the environment of the institution was effective to a great extent, but, the four elements of its internal control system were effective to a moderate extent. Therefore, the researcher concluded that the institution had an internal control system to a moderate extent proved by a mean of 3.4. This suggests that in spite of the institution designed its control environment to a great extent its policies and procedures weren’t enforced and monitored to a very great or great extent. Thus, the study recommended that the institution needs more effective implementation and monitoring of its policies and procedures and creating proper risk assessment to improve its internal control system. ABSTRACT The purpose of this research is to investigate the relationship between internal control material weaknesses (ICMWs), as measured by presence, number, and type, and Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA) violations. Our results indicate that firms with ICMWs are more likely to violate the FCPA and firms with multiple ICMWs have a higher likelihood of violating the FCPA than firms with fewer ICMWs. Further, firms with ICMWs related to the risk assessment, control environment, and control activities components of internal controls (based on the COSO Internal Control—Integrated Framework) present a higher risk of FCPA violations than firms without ICMWs in those areas. These findings substantiate the importance of effective internal controls in supporting firms' regulatory compliance. JEL Classifications: M42; M48; D73.

This study examine the internal control measures for fraud prevention and detection in Deposit Money Banks (DMBs) listed on the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE). Data collected were from both primary and secondary sources using annual financial reports and questionnaire for the respondents of all listed DMBs in Nigeria. Analysis was mainly done by regression of the internal control measures and fraud in DMBs. Internal control measures proxies are control environment, risk assessment and control activities. On the other hand, fraud prevention and detection proxy is discretional accruals. The analysis found out that the internal control measures of control environment, risk assessment, and control activities have negative influence on fraud detection and prevention (discretional accruals). However, the influence of risk assessment is not significant. It was therefore recommended that an overhaul of the management and internal control systems currently being operated by DMBs in Nigeria be done to make it strictly in line with IFRS standards and guidelines. Furthermore, this should be backed by the introduction of forensic auditing and assurance to make offenders not only liable for their actions; but also subject to legal prosecution as well.
