This study aims to evaluate the Quality of Work Environment (QWE) in Aircraft Maintenance Sector of Saudi Aerospace Engineering Industries (SAEI). It covers safety climate (safety, hazard, and injury), employee satisfaction about their jobs and employee satisfaction about management practices. For that purpose, 314 questionnaires were collected and analyzed. The study revealed that SAEI employees have neutral evaluations regarding safety climate in the organization and have neutral evaluations regarding their jobs at SAEI as well. On the other hand, the overall values statically indicate that SAEI employees are unsatisfied regarding SAEI management practices. In conclusion, SAEI employees are unsatisfied about the quality of work environment in general with overall median equal 2 and 95% of confidence. The majority of respondents (60.1%) were between unsatisfied and strongly unsatisfied regarding the QWE. Also, the study indicated that there were statistically significant differences in the employees’ evaluation regarding the QWE according to their job grades, job title, and their departments. These differences can be concluded as following; employees with higher grades were more satisfied with QWE at SAEI, managers, instructors, and auditors were more satisfied with QWE at SAEI and finally TQA employees were the most satisfied employees with QWE at SAEI while Hangar employees were the most unsatisfied. The study suggests some practical recommendations based on the outcomes of this study.

Purpose The purpose of this study is to explore the human resource management practices and the associated dimensions of quality of employment in university spin-offs. Through this, it becomes possible to explore and recognize the practices and difficulties placed on the employees of university spin-offs. Design/methodology/approach The United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) framework to assess the quality of work in the European Union is adopted. It is used a qualitative approach through the development of four case studies at university spin-offs located in Portugal. These case studies relate to four sectors of activity, such as information technology, urban mobility, health and electronics. Findings The findings reveal that most of the challenges of quality of work in a spin-off university are common to those in an SME or micro company. Among these factors, the authors highlight the lack of job security, reduced or no social protection and very low income and nonwage pecuniary benefits. Other factors specific to university spin-offs also emerge, such as the numerous opportunities for skills development and training, the potentialities to become an entrepreneur and the high number of working hours that are necessary to face the vibrant market dynamics. Originality/value The study aims to contribute, in a theoretical and empirically grounded basis, to the knowledge about the quality of employment in a spin-off university. This work becomes relevant for policymakers to understand in depth the specific challenges faced by employees of a spin-off university.

Abstract Purpose To study the workers’ perception of the quality of work community and its association with intention to retire early, separately among women and men working in Finnish postal service. Methods A questionnaire survey was sent to all Finnish postal services employees aged ≥ 50 years in 2016 and 44% (n = 2096) replied to the survey (mean age 56.3, 40% women). Employee’s intention to retire before statutory retirement was measured on a scale of 1–5 and dichotomized. The quality of work community was defined by four composite variables: equality at work, flexibility at work, supportive work environment and health or other reason and trichotomized by their tercile values. Odds ratio (ORs) and their 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for associations of quality of work community with intention to retire were calculated separately for men and women using log binomial regression models adjusted for potential confounders. Results About one-third of respondents intended to retire early with no significant gender difference in retirement intention. Low equality at work (women OR 2.77, 95% CI 1.60–4.81; men 2.84, 1.80–4.48) and low flexibility at work (women 3.30, 1.94–5.60; men 2.91, 1.88–4.50) was associated with higher likelihood of intention to retire. Among women intention to retire was found less likely due to low supportive work environment (0.52, 0.31–0.89) and among men due to intermediate health or other reason (0.65, 043–0.98). Conclusion The results highlight the importance of the quality of work community as well as the promotion of work-related health in order to encourage employees to remain at workforce for longer.
