Malaysia rural tourism is composed of a large number of rural communities, each with distinct and varied assets. Within Malaysia, it is noticeable that tourism demand drivers play an important role in generating trips to rural tourism areas. Nonetheless, there are a number of strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats in rural tourism. Clearly, rural tourism marketing efforts need to leverage on the existing strengths and maximize the available opportunities. Hence, the purpose of this research is to investigate the impact of tourism on social, economics, environment and cultural from local communities perspectives in rural setting. 184 respondents comprising of local communities from 34 rural tourism sites in Malaysia took part voluntarily in this study. Twelve hypotheses comprising the dimensions of social, economics, environment and cultural on three components namely, positioning, communities’ value and destination environment were developed. To assess the developed model, SmartPLS 2.0 (M3) was applied based on path modelling and then bootstrapping with 200 re-samples was applied to generate the standard error of the estimate and t-values. Interestingly, the findings suggested that local communities were most concerned on the cultural and social impacts of tourism on their values, repositioning of the destination and environment. The present study provides lessons on the importance of continuing the efforts to understand the impact of rural tourism development from the local communities’ perspectives and to take into considerations views from the local communities in developing rural tourism destination.

The question of whether the impact of having rural communities nearby an ecotourism area being positive or negative is one of the important issues in Ranau. Cooperation between villagers and park operator on the growth of tourists’ arrival is crucial and must be addressed. The aim of this study is to identify the local communities’ perception at Kampung Poring and Kampung Monggis, Ranau by mean if the ecotourism activities can uplift their economic, social, physical and general impression that they experienced. In addition, the involvements of local communities in ecotourism activities in their villages were also studied. A survey and face to face interview were carried out on a sample of 146 villagers from both study areas. Data analysis using frequency, mean scores and Pearson Correlation (2-sided) was conducted. From the result, positive perception has been perceived by the villagers as a result of the improvement of ecotourism activities such as increase in employment opportunities, infrastructure facilities have been upgraded, additional revenue sources for state governments and villagers as well as increase in Small and Medium Industries (SMIs). However, the perception and level of involvement of both villages is still at the moderate level, where many other issues still need to be improved in the future such as communication skills and accommodations. In conclusion, this matter should not be taken lightly so as not to occur dissatisfaction among villagers. Therefore, the park management party should be sensitive to this situation in order to maintain the welfare of the villagers and at the same time giving satisfaction to the tourists who enjoy ecotourism activities there.

Our study focuses on the planning and revitalization of mountainous rural tourism to generate income for many rural communities. It targets a community of Great Kabylie in the heart of Djurdjura massif in the eastern part of Tizi-Ouzou province in Algeria. Tourism in these mountainous areas could contribute to rural development, given that it covers 80% of the region and records 13913 tourist overnight stays. Rural tourism can be a valuable tool for local development in the Yakouren municipality. This paper is based on a literature review, field surveys, descriptive and analytical approach to revitalizing mountainous rural tourism in Yakouren, and revealing its potential through various methods, including Butler's theory, SWOT analysis, and elaboration of an indicator grid, and calculation of tourist traffic. From the results, we identified eight segments that attract tourists and five segments that villagers request. Finally, in a conceptual approach, we discuss the impact of this market on rural areas structure and propose some ideas to overcome it. As a result, through constant promotion, Yakouren can benefit from an increase in tourist traffic. Rural tourism in this mountainous community can be an essential source of income, but it requires investment.

Rural tourism is seen as a potential sector in promoting country to the world and at the same time generates incomes to local communities. However, due to the lucrative economic benefits, tourism destination’s sustainability and quality of services is often being ignored. Thus, this study highlights the importance of sustainable management and destination marketing efforts in rural tourism destinations with identified significant contributively factors from local communities’ perspective. A total of 168 respondents comprising of local communities from Kampung Telaga Air and Kampung Semadang, Kuching, Sarawak took part voluntarily in this study. To assess the developed model, SmartPLS 2.0 (M3) is applied based on path modelling and bootstrapping. Interestingly, the findings revealed that local communities believed factors like climate change, carrying capacity of a destination, and environmental education are significantly affect both tourism destination sustainable management and destination marketing efforts. Furthermore, community support is also found to be important too for tourism destination marketing efforts. Surprisingly, community support was found no relations with destination sustainable management from local communities’ point of view. This study further discussed on the implications of the findings, limitations, and direction for future research.

Tourism development brings both positive and negative social, economic and environmental impacts, and so does the development of rural tourism in Sembalun. Tourism is considered to have a great potential to improve people's welfare. The Sustainable Livelihood Framework is an instrument used to analyse the socio-economic impact of tourism development on the livelihood of local communities in Sembalun. This research is a replication of previous research in 2010 in Borobudur. This research compares the results of the impact analysis of heritage tourism in Borobudur with rural tourism in Sembalun on community livelihood based on the Sustainable Livelihood Framework instrument, not based on its different tourism attractions. In Sembalun the agricultural and tourism sectors support each other. The tourism sector has also proven to bring positive socio-economic impacts to local communities, such as promoting Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) products, increasing training and financial supports, job creation, cultural preservation, and pride and feeling of becoming part of the tourism development in their village. Tourism is also considered to have a positive impact in improving people's welfare. The most commonly complained negative impacts are waste as well as concerns that the local culture will be eroded by foreign culture brought by tourists. Keywords: tourism impact, sustainable livelihood framework, sustainable tourism, community based tourism, rural tourism

PURPOSE: Pediatric patients with cancer who live in rural communities face disparate access to medical services compared with those in urban areas. Our objectives were to use qualitative methods to describe how living in a rural setting during receipt of treatment at an urban cancer center affects a patient’s clinical course and to identify feasible areas of intervention to enhance service to these families. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted semistructured interviews of caregivers of pediatric patients with cancer who received treatment at an urban pediatric hospital in the Midwest. Questions focused on how distance between home residence and cancer-treating hospital affected cancer treatment. RESULTS: Eighteen caregiver interviews were conducted. Five multithemed domains were identified; two related to receipt of emergent care at local hospitals, one related to the impact that distance had on the family, and two related to managing and coping with a pediatric cancer diagnosis. CONCLUSION: Rural families of pediatric patients with cancer face unique challenges in addition to those previously identified for pediatric patients with cancer, most notably increased travel time to their cancer centers and increased time spent in community hospitals to receive emergent care. We recommend feasible steps to improve the care of rural children with cancer, including improved parental anticipatory guidance about unanticipated emergent visits to local hospitals, outreach to local hospitals, and medical visit coordination.

Purpose – The purpose of this study was to explore the impact of governmental support policies and socio-cultural influences on female entrepreneurship in rural Vietnam. As such, the study addresses an important literature gap concerning female entrepreneurship within rural communities in South East Asia. Design/methodology/approach – Qualitative in-depth interviews were conducted with six female entrepreneurs and six female non-entrepreneurs in northern Vietnam to examine the influence of various environmental factors on female entrepreneurship in a rural setting. Findings – The results suggest that government pro-entrepreneurship policies, together with private sector interventions, have had an impact on rural Vietnam. Yet females in rural and remote Vietnam are still constrained by societal prejudices, financial limitations, and limited entrepreneurship educational opportunities. Originality/value – The paper's originality lies in its review of the circumstances confronting women in rural Vietnam and its findings concerning the impact of environmental factors on female entrepreneurship in this setting.

Whether the characteristics of rural tourism changes or not provides the scale and basis for judging whether the rural tourism landscape has changed, but it cannot provide a judgment on the impact of rural tourism landscape changes. The impact is relative to the rural tourism landscape goal. The determination of rural tourism landscape objectives provides a baseline for judging the direction and impact of rural tourism characteristics and provides a prerequisite for rural tourism landscape actions. The determination of the quality target of the rural tourism landscape is mainly determined by the internal process and external demand of the rural tourism landscape. Through in-depth research on the frequent pattern growth algorithm FP-Growth, the algorithm can find frequent item sets by not generating candidate item sets. The core of the algorithm is the frequent pattern tree FP-tree, which can efficiently compress the transaction database. Based on the advantages of FP-tree, this paper improves a FP_Apriori algorithm based on frequent pattern trees. This algorithm projects the entire transaction database onto the FP-tree, avoiding a lot of I/O overhead. At the same time, I propose a more directional and targeted search strategy for FP-tree, which reduces the running time of the algorithm and uses the principle of the Mapping_Apriori algorithm to prethin the frequent item sets. This article uses the text analysis method of network data to excavate the characteristics and internal structure of rural tourism demand. The rural tourism market has a wide range of needs and multiple levels, and traditional research methods such as questionnaires have limited sample size and sample structure. With the help of network data, text mining, and other statistical analysis methods, in-depth empirical research on the characteristics and spatial structure of rural tourism in a certain region can cover more research groups. The research confirms that the results of using text analysis and questionnaire analysis on the perception of destination image are relatively consistent. Therefore, the network text analysis method is an effective tool to study the demand structure of the rural tourism market.

Protected areas (PA), especially biosphere reserves (BR), are considered effective instruments for nature conservation and rural development. However, their impact on rural communities constitutes the most controversial debate in conservation policy and practice. This study aims to reveal the perceptions of local communities towards conservation, the extent of the inclusion of local communities in the establishment and management of a BR and the impact of BRs on local livelihoods by exploring a case study while reflecting on major debates in the conservation and rural development paradigms. Mixed research methods focusing on qualitative methodology are used. By exploring a BR in Lebanon, this research highlights how the allocation and management of the BRs have not always reflected participatory, sustainable and community-based approaches. This study stresses the importance of the locals’ engagement in the whole conservation process. By putting people, their needs and perceptions at the center of decision-making, conservation agencies would shift the main objective of BRs from conservation to poverty reduction.
