The iron content in gametophytes of <i>Aulacomnium palustre. Climacium dendroides, Catharinea undulata</i> is 5—10 times higher than in vascular plants. The manganese, zine and copper content is 2-3 times higher than in vascular plants. The content of these elements in sporophytes of <i>Catharinea undulata</i> is approximately the same as in vascular plants. The accumulation of the investigated metals takes place mainly in the protoplasts of the chlorophyll cells of gametophyte leaves. A weakly acid pH of the medium favors accumulation. No distinct difference was found between the Fe<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub> content in mosses and the soil.

Pollution with heavy metals, as iron, manganese, zinc, copper, lead, nickel, and cadmium is considered for the coastal waters in two bights of Peter the Great Bay on the data of the metals content in tissues of the algae Sargassum miyabei and Saccharina japonica . The Fe and Mn indicate terrigenous runoff, the Zn and Cu - anthropogenic impact, and the Pb, Ni, and Cd are the tracers of industrial pollution. The content of Fe is the highest among heavy metals; its maximum concentrations are found in the top of the Kozmin Bay and at Cape Petrovsky in the Wrangel Bay. The Pb and Cd contents are higher at the small boats berthing in the Kozmin Bay. The Ni content is the highest (up to 4 mg/g) on reefs in front of the oil terminal in the Wrangel Bay and in the top of the Kozmin Bay that is possibly reasoned by shipping activity because Ni is included in all oils. The Zn concentration is the highest at the pier in the Wrangel Bay constructed of stone blocks. The contents of heavy metals in algae from these bights are compared with similar data from the Avachinsky Bay (Kamchatka), Nha-Trang Bay (Vietnam) and port Santos (Brazil); relatively high pollution of the Kozmin and Wrangel Bays by Pb is revealed. Pollution in these bights has mostly industrial and anthropogenic nature. The pollution with Ni and Cd decreased between 1995 and 2008, but became higher again in 2012-2013, the pollution with Mn, Zn and Fe also increased in 2012-2013.

Plants that are able to accumulate and tolerate extraordinarily high concentrations of heavy metals (hyperaccumulators) can be used for phytoremediation (removal of contaminants from soils) or phytomining (growing a crop of plants to harvest the metals). Two moss species, Bryum capillare Hedw. and Ceratodon purpureus Hedw., were tested as potential phytoremedies under in vivo conditions on a coal ash disposal site in the surroundings of Obrenovac (NW Serbia). The content of various heavy metals (iron, manganese zinc, lead, nickel, cadmium, and copper) in the mosses and substrata were investigated over a period of three years. Iron and zinc were found to have the highest concentration in the mosses.

. In this paper we present results of the measurement of some heavy metals in sheep cheese samples from three hill and alpine areas in the Banat area. We analysed, using flame and graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry, the following heavy metals: Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, Co, Ni, Cr, Pb, and Cd. The concentration ranges in the cheese samples were: 7.22-8.85, 1.36-1.83, 17.39-23.17, 0.691-0.886, 0.020-0.102, 0.002-0.010, 0,214-0.225, 0.193-0.314 and 0.001-0.003 mg/kg for iron, manganese, zinc, cooper, cobalt, nickel, chromium, lead and cadmium, respectively. Analysing experimental data shows that the specific soil and climate factors in the area favour cheese assortments with normal heavy metal contents under the form of essential elements and of low concentrations of heavy metals potentially toxic or toxic much below admitted toxicity levels.

Heavy metals are elements that mainly have a 5-22 gr.cm-3 specific gravity. Some of these metals are essential micronutrients for plant growth (Such as Zinc (Zn), Copper (Cu), Manganese (Mn), Nickel (Ni) and Cobalt (Co)). Some other heavy metals, have a high toxicity properties such as Lead (Pb), Cadmium (Cd) and Mercury (Hg). In order to investigate the potential of watercress (Nasturtium officinale) in the uptake of elements from nutrient solutions with different salinities, a factorial experiment was conducted in a completely randomized design with three replications in the greenhouse. In this experiment, different levels of arsenic were zero, 5, 10, 20, 40, 40, 80 and 160 mg.L-1, which were obtained from sodium arsenate source and added to Epstein’s nutrient solution to obtain the mentioned concentrations. The salt concentration of the nutrient solution was 0, 10, 20, 40 and 80 mM which was prepared from sodium chloride source and added to Epstein solution. After making nutrient solutions with different salinity and concentrations, watercress was cultivated. The ANOVA results showed that the interaction of salinity and arsenic levels on the calcium, magnesium, iron, manganese, zinc and copper concentrations in watercress was significant at the level of one percent probability. The highest concentrations of these elements were obtained in the levels without salinity and arsenic and the lowest values were obtained in the 80 mM salinity levels and 160 mg.l-1 arsenic.

The heavy metal concentration (e.g., Mn, Zn, Pb and Ni) were determined in soft tissues and shells of freshwater mussels (Lamellidens marginalis) at the various sites of Dhanmondi lake, Dhaka, Bangladesh between the period April, 2010 and March 2011. The heavy metal concentrations in shells and soft tissues of freshwater mussels were tended to vary significantly among sampling points and seasons in Dhanmondi Lake. Distribution of heavy metals in shell and soft tissue of Lamellidens marginalis followed the order Mn>Zn>Pb>Ni, respectively. According to the t-test, level of manganese, zinc and lead under investigation between shell and tissue showed statistically significant differences [Mn: t=-11.387; df=16; P=0.000; Zn: t=-2.590; df=16; P=0.020 and Pb: t=-2.8679; df=16; P=0.011].

This study deals with the potential use of water stored in a lake formed by Reocín’s old zinc mine, which has become the second most important reservoir in Cantabria, with a flow of 1300 L s−1. The methodology used is based on the hydrogeological and hydrochemical characterization of the area studied. A total of 16 piezometers were installed to monitor the amount and quality of water. Results obtained show a pH close to 8 and iron, manganese, zinc, and sulphate concentrations lower than 0.05 mg L−1, 0.05 mg L−1, 1.063 mg L−1, and 1305.5 mg L−1, respectively. The volume of the water stored in the lake amounts to 34 hm3. Measurements show that Fe, Mn, and Zn concentrations are below the limits acceptable for human consumption, according to the Spanish 0.2, 0.05, and 5.0 mg L−1 standards, respectively, while sulphate greatly exceeds the 250 mg L−1 limit accepted by the norm. Therefore, the water could be apt for human consumption after a treatment appropriate for decreasing the sulphate level by, for example, reverse osmosis, distillation, or ion exchange. Although industrial and energy uses are possible, the lake water could be utilized as a geothermal energy source. The management of the hydric resources generated when a mine is closed could improve the economic and environmental conditions of the zone, with all the benefits it brings about, thus allowing for compensating of the pumping cost that environmental protection entails, creating, at the same time, a new business opportunity for the company that owns the mine.

Abstract The aim of this study was to determine the ecological characteristics of vascular plants colonizing serpentine mining waste dumps and quarries in Lower Silesia. The investigated flora was analyzed with regard to species composition, geographical-historical status, life forms, as well as selected ecological factors, such as light and trophic preferences, soil moisture and reaction, value of resistance to increased heavy metals content in the soil, seed dispersal modes and occurrence of mycorrhiza. There were 113 species of vascular plants, belonging to 28 families, found on seven sites in the study. The most numerous families were Asteraceae, Poaceae, Fabaceae and Caryophyllaceae. Only 13% of all plants recorded occurred on at least five of the study sites. The most numerous were species related to dry grassland communities, particularly of the Festuco-Brometea class, which included taxa endangered in the region of Lower Silesia: Avenula pratensis, Salvia pratensis, Festuca valesiaca. Apophytes dominated in the flora of the investigated communities. Hemicryptophytes were the most numerous group and therophytes were also abundant. The serpentine mining waste dumps and querries hosted heliophilous species which prefer mesic or dry habitats moderately poor in nutrients, featuring neutral soil reaction. On two study sites 30% of the flora composition consisted of species that tolerate an increased content of heavy metals in the soil. Anemochoric species were the most numerous with regard to types of seed dispersal. Species with an arbuscular type of mycorrhiza were definitely dominant in the flora of all the study sites, however, the number of nonmycorrhizal species was also relatively high. It was suggested that both the specific characteristics of the habitats from serpentine mining and the vegetation of adjacent areas had a major impact on the flora composition of the communities in the investigated sites.

The common bean has been object of breeding programs aiming the development of new cultivars adapted to varied production system and shown differentiated nutritional characteristics. Due a genetic diversity existent the landraces can be used directly for cropping, for present characteristics desirable. Little information exists about mineral content and other quality traits for those bean landraces. The aim of this paper was to verify the variability for grain nutricional caracters in breeding cultivars and landraces of bean from Rio Grande do Sul state, Brazil. The experiment was conducted in 2009/2010 in Experimental Station Cascata, of Embrapa Temperate Agriculture. In whole grain of 54 bean genotypes with black and no black coat were determined macroelements (nitrogen, phosphorus, potash, calcium, magnesium and sulfur), oligoelements (iron, manganese, zinc and cuprum), protein and ash content, insoluble fiber, digestive nutrient and antioxidant astragalina. The results shown that the landraces varieties presents nutritional composition of macro and oligoelements, fibers, protein and ash contents in whole grain similar than that of breeding lines and cultivars. The black coat grain from breeding programs showed better nutritional quality for macro and oligoelements content than coloured grain, highlighting TB 02-04 e TB 01-01. The landraces with coloured grains TB 02-26, TB 02-24 and TB 03-13 showed the high levels of astragaline.
