Polyurethane foam is commonly used in the automobile industry due to its favorable acoustic performances. In this study, a new tung oil-based polyurethane composite foam (TOPUF) was prepared by a one-step method. Different forms and contents of miscanthus lutarioriparius (ML) were used in TOPUF for improving acoustic performance. Polyurethane foams were characterized by means of Fourier transform infrared and SEM. The acoustic properties and mechanical properties of TOPUF, obtained with ML, were determined and compared with pure petroleum-based polyurethane foam. The results illustrate that the modification of TOPUF with the ML has a positive effect on the acoustic and mechanical properties in comparison to the unmodified foam. TOPUF obtained with ML powders has better acoustic performance than that obtained with ML strips. The optimum acoustic performance is achieved at the filler content of 0.3 wt%. The average sound absorption coefficient and transmission loss can reach 0.518, and 19.05 dB, respectively.

Sunflower cake (SC), which is waste during the production of sunflower oil, was selected as a modifier of properties in polyurethane (PUR) foams. The SC was chemically modified with triphenylsilanol (SC_S) and physically modified with rapeseed oil (SC_O). The influence of SC on the rheological properties of the polyol and the kinetics of foam growth were investigated. PUR foams were characterized by morphological, mechanical, and thermal analysis. The results show that the physical and chemical modification of SC contributes to the changes in the properties of the foams in different ways. Too high hydrophobicity of SC_O affects the structure deterioration, and thus the mechanical properties, and in turn, reduces the affinity for water. In turn, chemical modification with silane allows for obtaining foams with the best mechanical properties.

ABSTRACTGraphite nanoplates (GnP) have recently attracted attention as an economically viable alternative for the development of functional and structural nanocomposites. The incorporation of GnP into waterborne polyurethane (WPU) with loadings from 0.1 to 10 wt.% was studied. The mechanical properties of the composite films were assessed by tensile testing showing an increase of the Young’s modulus up to 48%. The electrical conductivity increased by 9 orders of magnitude and the water vapor permeability of the composite films decreased 57% for composites containing 5.0 wt.% of GnP.

New composite foams were prepared by co-foaming of Melamine-Urea-Formaldehyde (MUF) resin and wood fiber in the closed mould at 70°C. The effects of amount of wood fiber on mechanical properties, brittleness, flame-retardant, insulation and microscopic structures of wood fiber-MUF foam were investigated. Results indicated that the flame-retardant properties increased, and the brittleness and mechanical properties decreased with the increase of the amount of wood fiber in composite foams. The addition of wood fiber resulted in more uniform cell size distribution and irregular cell shape, but had little effect on insulation properties.
