The purpose of our study is to verify the usefulness of gamma irradiation treatment at low doses (0.25, 0.5 and 1 kGy) combined to vacuum packaging on commercial teas of Thymus satureioides deliberately contaminated with Escherichia coli. The efficiency and the influence of the process on contamination level and the shelf life of the product were studied. The phenolic composition and concentration were identified in the unirradiated and irradiated thyme. The total phenolic content (TPC) was assayed by the Folin-Ciocalteu method, the individual phenolic compounds were determined by high liquid chromatography (HPLC) and the essential oil was characterized by gas chromatography coupled to mass spectroscopy (GC-MS). The plant was observed by scanning electrons microscopy and the radioactivity effect was analyzed. The results show a complete decontamination of thyme depending to the dose and the storage time. Privileged hygienic quality was found in the irradiated thyme with the highest concentrations of polyphenols. The process showed the conservation of thyme quality without any alteration of its characteristics or radioactivity effect.

The Cocoa pod husk (CPH) is a processed cocoa fruit waste, containing lignocellulosic biomass which can be pyrolysis to produce liquid smoke. The purpose of this study was to obtain antibacterial material from liquid smoke using the CPH pyrolysis method. This research method includes: preparation by drying the CPH raw materials for 5-7 days and then chopping the CPH sample dry. Furthermore, the pyrolysis process is carried out at 385-500 °C with a heating flow rate of 6 °C/min. The liquid smoke crude obtained is filtered and distilled fractionated to produce clearer liquid smoke. Analysis of Total Phenolic Content (TPC) of liquid smoke was carried out by the Folin-Ciocalteu (FC) method using gallic acid standards and Ultraviolet-Visible spectrophotometer instruments at maximum wavelength (λmax) 765 nm. The CPH liquid smoke antibacterial test was carried out using a dilution method with variations in liquid smoke concentrations of 5, 7, 10and 15%. The TPC of CPH liquid smoke is 1.035 g / L.The spectrogram analysis of Gas Chromatography-Mass spectroscopy (GC-MS)  of CPH liquid smoke shows the presence of compounds:acetic acid, Methyl glyoxal,Pyridine, 4-methyl- pyridine,  4-[2(methylamino)ethyl]- Phenol.The results of the analysis of the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of CPH liquid smoke against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus bacteria were obtained at a concentration of 15%.This study shows that pyrolysis extraction can be used as a technique for obtaining extracts of phenolic compounds from CPH and is promising for safe antibacterial agents.Keywords: CPH, liquid smoke, pyrolysis, Phenolic, antibacterial.Abstrak Kulit buah kakao (KBK) merupakan limbah hasil olahan buah kakao, mengandung biomassa lignoselulosa yang dapat dipirolisis menghasilkan asap cair.Tujuan penelitian ini untuk mendapatkan zat antibakteri dari asap cair dengan metode pirolisis KBK. Metode penelitian ini meliputi: preparasi dengan pengeringan bahan baku KBK selama 5-7 hari kemudian dilakukan pencacahan  sampel KBK kering. Selanjutnya, Proses pirolisis dilakukan pada suhu 385-500°C dengan kecepatan alir pemanasan 6°C/menit.Crude asap cair yang diperoleh difiltrasi dan didestilasi fraksinasi untuk menghasilkan asap cair yang lebih jernih. AnalisisTotal Phenolic Content (TPC) asap cair dilakukan dengan metode Folin-Ciocalteu (FC) menggunakan standar asam galat dan instrumen spektrofotometer Ultraviolet-Visible pada panjang gelombang maksimum (λmaks) 765 nm. Uji antibakteri asap cair KBK dilakukan menggunakan metode dilusi dengan variasi konsentrasi asap cair yaitu 5, 7, 10dan 15%. TPC asap cair KBK sebesar 1,035 g/L.Analisis spectrogram Gas Chromatography-Mass spectroscopy (GC-MS) asap cair KBK menunjukkan adanya senyawa: asam asetat, metil glioksal, piridin, 4-metil-piridin, 4-[2(metilamino) etil]-fenol. Hasil analisiskonsentrasi hambat minimum (KHM) asap cairKBKterhadap bakteri Escherichia coli dan Staphylococcus aureus didapatkan pada konsentrasi 15%.Studi ini menunjukkan bahwa ekstraksi pirolisis dapat digunakan sebagai teknik untuk memperoleh ekstrak senyawa fenolik dari CPH dan menjanjikan untuk bahan antibakteri yang aman.Kata kunci: KBK, asap cair, pirolisis, fenolik, antibakteri.

Produce-associated foodborne illnesses outbreaks have highlighted the need for more effective decontamination methods to ensure the safety of fresh produce. The main objective of this study was to evaluate the individual and combined efficacies of germicidal UV light (12.5 to 500 mJ/cm2), acidified sodium hypochlorite (ASC; 10 to 200 ppm), and mild heat (40 to 50°C) for decontaminating green onions and baby spinach infected with Escherichia coli O157:H7. Samples were inoculated by spot and dip inoculation methods to mimic surface and infiltrated E. coli O157:H7 contamination, respectively. In green onions and baby spinach, the individual efficacies of UV, ASC, and mild-heat treatments varied based on the produce type and contamination method. Following analysis of the efficacies of the single treatments, a combined treatment with 125 mJ/cm2 UV and 200 ppm of ASC at 50°C was selected for spot-inoculated green onions, and a combined treatment with 125 mJ/cm2 UV and 200 ppm of ASC at 20°C was selected for spot- and dip-inoculated baby spinach. While a >5-log reduction was achieved with the combination treatment for spot-inoculated green onions with an initial contamination level of 7.2 log CFU per spot, the same treatment reduced E. coli O157:H7 populations below the detection limit (<1 log) on green onions spot inoculated at a lower contamination level (4.3 log CFU per spot). On spot- and dip-inoculated baby spinach, the combined treatment reduced E. coli O157:H7 populations by 2.8 log CFU per spot and 2.6 log CFU/g, respectively. The combined treatment of 500 mJ/cm2 UV and 200 ppm of ASC at 50°C selected for the decontamination of dip-inoculated green onions resulted in a 2.2-log CFU/g reduction. These findings suggest that when foodborne pathogens contaminate produce and subsequently infiltrate, attach to, or become localized into protected areas, the individual or combined applications of UV, ASC, and mild-heat treatments have limited decontamination efficacies on both green onions and baby spinach (<3 log). However, treatments combining UV, ASC, and mild heat could be a promising application for reducing pathogen populations (>5 log) on E. coli O157:H7 surface-contaminated green onions. This study also highlights the importance of developing and optimizing produce-specific decontamination methods to ensure the safety of fresh produce commodities.

This paper presents the procedures developed and used in the individual treatment programs for a group of preschool, postrubella, hearing-impaired children. A case study illustrates the systematic fashion in which the clinician plans programs for each child on the basis of the child’s progress at any given time during the program. The clinician’s decisions are discussed relevant to (1) the choice of a mode(s) for the child and the teacher, (2) the basis for selecting specific target behaviors, (3) the progress of each program, and (4) the implications for future programming.

John Rae, a Scottish antiquarian collector and spirit merchant, played a highly prominent role in the local natural history societies and exhibitions of nineteenth-century Aberdeen. While he modestly described his collection of archaeological lithics and other artefacts, principally drawn from Aberdeenshire but including some items from as far afield as the United States, as a mere ‘routh o’ auld nick-nackets' (abundance of old knick-knacks), a contemporary singled it out as ‘the best known in private hands' (Daily Free Press 4/5/91). After Rae's death, Glasgow Museums, National Museums Scotland, the University of Aberdeen Museum and the Pitt Rivers Museum in Oxford, as well as numerous individual private collectors, purchased items from the collection. Making use of historical and archive materials to explore the individual biography of Rae and his collection, this article examines how Rae's collecting and other antiquarian activities represent and mirror wider developments in both the ‘amateur’ antiquarianism carried out by Rae and his fellow collectors for reasons of self-improvement and moral education, and the ‘professional’ antiquarianism of the museums which purchased his artefacts. Considered in its wider nineteenth-century context, this is a representative case study of the early development of archaeology in the wider intellectual, scientific and social context of the era.

This paper demonstrates how a range of linguistic methods can be harnessed in pursuit of a deeper understanding of the ‘lived experience’ of psychological disorders. It argues that such methods should be applied more in medical contexts, especially in medical humanities. Key extracts from The Unabridged Journals of Sylvia Plath are examined, as a case study of the experience of depression. Combinations of qualitative and quantitative linguistic methods, and inter- and intra-textual comparisons are used to consider distinctive patterns in the use of metaphor, personal pronouns and (the semantics of) verbs, as well as other relevant aspects of language. Qualitative techniques provide in-depth insights, while quantitative corpus methods make the analyses more robust and ensure the breadth necessary to gain insights into the individual experience. Depression emerges as a highly complex and sometimes potentially contradictory experience for Plath, involving both a sense of apathy and inner turmoil. It involves a sense of a split self, trapped in a state that one cannot overcome, and intense self-focus, a turning in on oneself and a view of the world that is both more negative and more polarized than the norm. It is argued that a linguistic approach is useful beyond this specific case.

In this paper we investigate how well residents of the Andaman coast in Phang Nga province, Thailand, are prepared for earthquakes and tsunami. It is hypothesized that formal education can promote disaster preparedness because education enhances individual cognitive and learning skills, as well as access to information. A survey was conducted of 557 households in the areas that received tsunami warnings following the Indian Ocean earthquakes on 11 April 2012. Interviews were carried out during the period of numerous aftershocks, which put residents in the region on high alert. The respondents were asked what emergency preparedness measures they had taken following the 11 April earthquakes. Using the partial proportional odds model, the paper investigates determinants of personal disaster preparedness measured as the number of preparedness actions taken. Controlling for village effects, we find that formal education, measured at the individual, household, and community levels, has a positive relationship with taking preparedness measures. For the survey group without past disaster experience, the education level of household members is positively related to disaster preparedness. The findings also show that disaster related training is most effective for individuals with high educational attainment. Furthermore, living in a community with a higher proportion of women who have at least a secondary education increases the likelihood of disaster preparedness. In conclusion, we found that formal education can increase disaster preparedness and reduce vulnerability to natural hazards.

This study is designed to assess the macroeconomic performance of fund-supported programs, and the sequencing and ordering of macroeconomic policies in the context of the Pakistan economy. The generalized evaluation estimator technique has been used to assess the macroeconomic impacts of the IMF supported programs. GDP growth, inflation rate, current account balance, fiscal balance and unemployment are used as the target variables in order to gauge economic performance during the program years. The vector of policy variables (that might have been adopted in the absence of programs) and the vector of foreign exogenous variables are also taken as explanatory variables in the model, so that the individual effect of the IMF supported programs could be assessed. The result suggests that as the IMF prescriptions were applied, the current account balance has worsened, the unemployment rate has significantly increased, and the inflation rate has increased during the years of fund-supported programs. Only the budget balance has shown signs of improvement. Furthermore an inadequate sequencing of reforms has contributed to the further worsening of the economic scenario during the program period.
