This chapter proposes the idea of accessibility experience design for e-business services, as a bi-directional accessibility perspective for e-business growth in market share. The study is based on the needs for social justice, inclusion, and access on one hand, and business profit on the other. e-Business services have continued to grow with advancement of web and mobile business applications, which give better access to customers and influence the public. Awareness of the need for universal accessibility, to the services which are progressively being offered online, has also increased. Recently, accessibility policies and regulations have become more visible. However, even with the current COVID-19 situation and the shift to online mode, e-business services still lag in web and document accessibility. The resultant loss of access to the sub-population of impaired people results in missed business and market expansion opportunities. Therefore, this chapter explores the current drivers of accessibility practices, adoption by e-business services, and their market implications. The bi-directional accessibility perspective is proposed through the notion of accessibility experience design. The chapter is based on secondary research, which is complimented with demographic analysis of existing population data sets.

Rapid developments in mobile networks and wireless information systems nowadays are researched and adopted. Innovative business models are continually performing and could become a major benchmark in the electronic business field. Understanding them and attempting to design them are important issues. The differentiation of mobile business aspects from electronic business dimensions are a set of the parameters that set mobile business services to leading positions. One of the biggest partitive attributes between electronic mobile business applications is the working options of the user. Electronic business environment constrains the user work at the stationary position. Mobile business applications allow the user work in total mobility conditions. Also new network-based options can handle many of the services features, which can add value to mobile business services. Mobile business is the result of the electronic business and information technologies evolution. For the value adding, mobile business services should take real advantage of electronic business services, with the opportunities of creating, configuring, integrating, upgrading, troubleshooting, and maintaining new business models. A variety of mobile business service offerings that could take advantage of electronic business are presented. A treatment is suggested to add value and differentiate mobile business services, so that they continue to remain profitable.

The use of mobile devices and smartphones is increasingly becoming a critical part of many people’s lifestyle. Such usage can vary from playing games to accomplishing work-related tasks. Being able to use organizations’ persuasive technologies via mobile business services or to achieve work-related tasks ubiquitously at any time means that such devices provide a valuable service, especially for employees who are working online. This paper explores the impact of mBusiness on the social life of employees. In the research, structural equation modeling was applied to validate the research model. Employees in Saudi organizations were surveyed to test the research hypotheses. The research results confirmed that there are some negative effects of using mBusiness technologies on the social life of employees. Based on the analysis, the findings revealed that addiction to mBusiness technologies significantly increases the perceived work overload, which also significantly increases work-family conflict. The paper concludes with some implications of this research.

Background: To optimize traumatic spinal cord injury (tSCI) care, administrative and clinical linked data are required to describe the patient’s journey. Objectives: To describe the methods and progress to deterministically link SCI data from multiple databases across the SCI continuum in British Columbia (BC) and Ontario (ON) to answer epidemiological and health service research questions. Methods: Patients with tSCI will be identified from the administrative Hospital Discharge Abstract Database using International Classification of Diseases (ICD) codes from Population Data BC and ICES data repositories in BC and ON, respectively. Admissions for tSCI will range between 1995–2017 for BC and 2009-2017 for ON. Linkage will occur with multiple administrative data holdings from Population Data BC and ICES to create the “Admin SCI Cohorts.” Clinical data from the Rick Hansen SCI Registry (and VerteBase in BC) will be transferred to Population Data BC and ICES. Linkage of the clinical data with the incident cases and administrative data at Population Data BC and ICES will create subsets of patients referred to as the “Clinical SCI Cohorts” for BC and ON. Deidentified patient-level linked data sets will be uploaded to a secure research environment for analysis. Data validation will include several steps, and data analysis plans will be created for each research question. Discussion: The creation of provincially linked tSCI data sets is unique; both clinical and administrative data are included to inform the optimization of care across the SCI continuum. Methods and lessons learned will inform future data-linking projects and care initiatives.

The purpose of this paper is to present a non-traditional pipeline mechanical damage ranking system using multiple-data-set in-line inspection (ILI) tools. Mechanical damage continues to be a major factor in reportable incidents for hazardous liquid and gas pipelines. While several ongoing programs seek to limit damage incidents through public awareness, encroachment monitoring, and one-call systems, others have focused efforts on the quantification of mechanical damage severity through modeling, the use of ILI tools, and subsequent feature assessment at locations selected for excavation. Current generation ILI tools capable of acquiring multiple-data-sets in a single survey may provide an improved assessment of the severity of damaged zones using methods developed in earlier research programs as well as currently reported information. For magnetic flux leakage (MFL) type tools, using multiple field levels, varied field directions, and high accuracy deformation sensors enables detection and provides the data necessary for enhanced severity assessments. This paper will provide a review of multiple-data-set ILI results from several pipe joints with simulated mechanical damage locations created mimicing right-of-way encroachment events in addition to field results from ILI surveys using multiple-data-set tools.

Competitive activity among players keen on tapping into this opportunity is increasing rapidly. In this article, we look at mobile business services from a strategic business perspective. We chart the mobile business services landscape and discuss the underlying market drivers and potential end-user benefits. Additionally, we describe the competitive landscape and discuss the relative positions of the primary player groups.

As an increasing number of organizations and individuals are dependent on mobile technologies to perform their tasks, various mobile applications have been rapidly introduced and used in a number of areas such as communications, financial management, information retrieval, and entertainment. Mobile applications were initially very basic and simple, but the introduction of higher bandwidth capability and the rapid diffusion of Internet-compatible phones, along with the innovations in the mobile technologies, allow for richer and more efficient applications. Over the years, mobile applications have primarily been developed in consumer-oriented areas where products such as e-mail, games, and music have led the market (Gebauer & Shaw, 2004). According to the ARC group, mobile entertainment service will generate $27 billion globally by 2008 with 2.5 billion users (Smith, 2004). Even though mobile business (m-business) applications have been slow to catch on mobile applications for consumers and are still waiting for larger-scale usage, m-business application areas have received enormous attention and have rapidly grown. As entertainment has been a significant driver of consumer-oriented mobile applications, applications such as delivery, construction, maintenance, and sales of mobile business have been drivers of m-business applications (Funk, 2003). By fall of 2003, Microsoft mobile solutions partners had registered more than 11,000 applications including e-mail, calendars and contacts, sales force automation, customer relationship management, and filed force automation (Smith, 2004). However, in spite of their huge potential and benefits, the adoption of m-business applications appears much slower than anticipated due to numerous technical and managerial problems.

Abstract Bacteria, fungi, and other microorganisms in the environment (i.e., environmental microbiomes) provide vital ecosystem services and affect human health. Despite their importance, public awareness of environmental microbiomes has lagged behind that of human microbiomes. A key problem has been a scarcity of research demonstrating the microbial connections across environmental biomes (e.g., marine, soil) and between environmental and human microbiomes. We show in the present article, through analyses of almost 10,000 microbiome papers and three global data sets, that there are significant taxonomic similarities in microbial communities across biomes, but very little cross-biome research exists. This disconnect may be hindering advances in microbiome knowledge and translation. In this article, we highlight current and potential applications of environmental microbiome research and the benefits of an interdisciplinary, cross-biome approach. Microbiome scientists need to engage with each other, government, industry, and the public to ensure that research and applications proceed ethically, maximizing the potential benefits to society.
