Several studies have researched the reasons and patterns for academic library users’ interlibrary loan requests for materials already available at their college or university library. This study examines interlibrary loan statistics at the University of Delaware for four academic years to determine whether WorldCat Local impacts requests for locally available material. Data show that WorldCat Local does reduce this type of request, particularly when users are requesting returnable loans of materials such as books or audiovisual items rather than copies of articles.

Abstract: This paper presents the results of a documentary search about factors that motivate the use of university library. Literature about these factors was not found, either not standards or indicators used to measure those factors’ impact. On the other side, evidence was found about the decrease in library attendance, reported by the university libraries themselves; however, no evidence about the causes of this phenomenon was found. In sucha context, this article presents a research project that will be applied in 3 universities at Northeast Mexico, in which a methodology to identify and analyze motivation in students to use the university library is proposed.Keywords: academic library, library use studies, library users, motivation, library services, user satisfactionResumen: En este trabajo se presentan los resultados de la revisión documental sobre el tema de los factores que motivan el uso de la biblioteca universitaria. No se encontró literatura sobre estos factores y tampoco se encontraron normas o indicadores de referencia que permitan medir su impacto. Por otro lado, se encontró evidencia de un descenso en la asistencia reportada por las bibliotecas de las instituciones de educación superior, pero no se encontró evidencia de sus causas. Ante este escenario, en el presente artículo se plantea unproyecto de investigación que se aplicará en 3 universidades del noreste de México, en el cual se propone una metodología para identificar y analizar los factores que motivan, a sus estudiantes para utilizar la biblioteca universitaria.Palabras clave: biblioteca universitaria, estudios de uso de biblioteca, usuarios de biblioteca, motivación, servicios bibliotecarios, satisfacción de usuarios.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to develop a decision-making model for buy vs borrow selection decisions. Design/methodology/approach – The authors conduct a statistical analysis of circulation transactions and Interlibrary Loan (ILL) request data related to Western books as well as the overall subject content of local collections. They compare the relative costs and delivery times for obtaining materials through interlibrary loan channels vs purchase from domestic or foreign publishers. Based on this analysis, they make recommendations for buy vs borrow decision-making model relevant to the Western books collection at the Peking University Library. Findings – For materials available domestically, requesting through ILL is the preferred acquisitions strategy because of the low cost of domestic service and the comparable speed of delivery. Materials that can only be obtained from foreign libraries are best acquired through a combination of purchase-on-demand and ILL. Originality/value – This paper adds to the corpus of professional literature on buy vs borrow collection development models but adds a unique perspective by applying this model to a Western book collection in a Chinese academic library.

Purpose The University of Kansas (KU) libraries has faced increased requests for streaming video in the past five years. While we have provided access to many databases of films, feature films remained a problem. To write a collection development policy, the library undertook three investigations to ensure the outcome reflected the needs of the university. Design/methodology/approach Film titles included in Swank 300 and Criterion-on-Demand were checked against the CanIStream. it? website to check for availability through streaming, rental or purchase services. Student library users were surveyed to determine if they had streaming subscriptions and, if so, which ones. KU librarians also examined academic library collection development polices to understand how others have addressed this issue. Findings More than half of the feature films provided by the two vendors are available through subscriptions, renting or purchasing methods. A majority of students subscribe to one or more of these services. Many academic libraries are deciding not to provide streaming feature films. Originality/value There are no previous studies on students’ subscriptions to streaming services linked to availability of feature films offered from commercial vendors to libraries.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to identify the value and benefits from newly developed relationships between the University of Alberta Libraries’ Interlibrary Loan Department and other institutions through the delivery of new services. Design/methodology/approach The paper is a descriptive review of the new services provided, including a centralized interlibrary loan service for members of the NEOS Consortium and an article delivery service for Can Tho University Library (Vietnam), an overview of the implementation of the services and a discussion of the value and benefits created. Findings A single-point of intake for interlibrary loan requests for a group of academic libraries can be implemented successfully with few drawbacks, providing benefits to all the participants. An article delivery service to an institution that provides no interlibrary loan services provides value through access to new resources and demonstrates not to be a burden on the provider; yet, this paper demonstrates that the primary value is in learning about their patrons’ needs. Practical implications Other institutions could replicate these services and relationships. Originality/value Single-point of intake for interlibrary loan in academic consortial environments has neither been demonstrated in the literature nor has any component of interlibrary loan been described to support international initiatives to assist libraries in disadvantaged countries.

The paradigm shift in university libraries where research support servcies are increasingly relevant is analyze. This situation results from the research role in assessing the quality and excellence of universities, as reflected in the various documents and rankings. The various research support servcies are described both in the university and in the academic library, with special emphasis on the management of digital identity. For this purpose, the concepts of reputation and identity, within and outside the digital environment, are defined, their main resources are analyzed and a brief overview is given on the management of the digital identity of the research community through data from three studies. We define possible scenarios in which the university library can work in support of a better management of the reputation and digital identity of researchers, considering that this will have an impact on those of the university itself.Se analiza el cambio de paradigma en las bibliotecas universitarias donde los servicios orientados a la investigación adquieren cada vez más relevancia. Esta situación es resultado del papel de la investigación en la valoración de la calidad y la excelencia de las universidades tal como queda reflejado en los diversos documentos y rankings. Se describen los diversos servicios orientados en la investigación tanto en la universidad como en la biblioteca universitaria haciendo especial énfasis en la gestión de la identidad digital. A este fin se definen los conceptos de reputación e identidad dentro y fuera del entorno digital, se analizan sus principales recursos y se ofrece una breve panorámica sobre la gestión de la identidad digital de la comunidad investigadora a través de los datos de tres estudios. With increasing competition from external information sources academic libraries need to undertake strong marketing initiatives to redress the balance. Evidence-based practice and evaluation of internal services may help to secure the future permanency of the academic library. In light of this, an initiative was undertaken by the Engineering Team at the University Library, Loughborough University to market its services and resources to the Engineering Faculty. A survey was utilised as the marketing tool. It was made available in electronic format and marketed via the Library website, Team Blog and targeted emails. Evaluation of the results enabled the Team to further raise its profile by taking various issues directly to the Faculty and actively marketing avenues of communication, training sessions and the Institutional Repository. As a marketing tool the survey approach was largely successful and subject teams may wish to utilise this approach as a component of their marketing strategy.

The University Library and Learning Service (ULLS) already measure their performance by the usual parameters - recording various usage and performance indices, including a user satisfaction survey. By endeavouring to measure 'impact' however, this project offered ULLS a different opportunity - to gain a deeper understanding of the complex interaction between library users and library services and resources.

This paper described that users visit the Tamilnadu Agricultural University library for collecting information from students and faculty members. The researchers have attempted to find out the perceptions and outlook of the university library users with highly response to utilize the facility is available. The study shows that the quality of collection with respect to books, Journals and e-resources. Google is most popular search engine among the user for browsing the net. Reference Service is the most prefer by the staff and students.

This study measures the return on investment (ROI) of the Syracuse University library. Faculty and students at Syracuse University were surveyed using contingent valuation methodology to measure their willingness to pay in time and money for the services of the academic library. Their travel time and use of the online library was measured to determine the environmental value of the academic library. The economic and environmental value of the Syracuse University library show an ROI of $4.49 returned to the university for every $1.00 spent each year.
