Objective: The purpose of this paper was to evaluate the actions developed in oral health directed toward the institutionalized senior population from the perspective of municipal health managers and oral health professionals in primary care in Brazil. Methods: A qualitative, observational, and analytical study was developed and carried out in 11 municipalities between 2008 and 2010. Semi-structured interviews and analysis by ALCESTE software were used. The results from 48 subjects were analyzed. Results: The analysis revealed a 64% and 77% success rate for the corpus of health managers and oral health professionals, respectively. An Ishikawa diagram was generated using the subjects’ responses to identify the quality problem. Conclusions: This study verified that there is a lack of implementation of public policies directed toward seniors and also highlighted that there was lack of incentives and training to assist seniors in the municipalities. Therefore, it is necessary to invest in greater attention for senior patients who reside in homes for the aged.

The paper points out that in polish population dental and orthodontic prophylaxis is not widely propagated. It indicates the role of pediatricians in parents education of oral health prophylaxis and shows the role of primary health professionals in early detection and prevention of malocclusions and oral defects. In this paper the overall knowledge on dental prophylaxis was systemized. Dental caries and malocclusions are the particular problems concerning small patients. Epidemiological studies showed that the prevalence of malocclusions among polish children and adolescents is around 61.8%. Parafunctions together with dysfunctions and milk tooth early loss are the most common and significant etiological factors of acquired malocclusions. Pediatricians are able to detect many of that bad habits during out patients visits. Prevention is particularly important at the early stage of growing, because this is the time when stomatognatic system is the most susceptible for deformations. Thus, it is worth to remember that oral health is strongly related to general child’s health.

While the term "teamwork" has been used in preventive dentistry for decades, little work has been done in the area of integrating oral health into general health via participation in primary health care or interdisciplinary teams. Oral health professionals must be prepared at the pre-professional and professional levels with the knowledge and skills required to become effective members and leaders of collaborative teams. This paper describes guiding principles for successful team development that are derived from the experience of other disciplines. As oral health professionals take a more active part in interdisciplinary collaborative teams, they must be prepared for roles beyond that of clinician. Five additional roles and examples of their importance to the prevention of oral disease and conditions are discussed.

Qualitative and exploratory study performed in Cuiabá with 20 health professionals with the objective of analyzing the use of child health records by families, from the viewpoint of professionals working in primary health care. Data were collected by semi-structured interviews with thematic content analysis. The results showed that professionals believed that it is the duty of families to take care of child health records and to take them every time they seek health services for their children. However, despite the guidance provided, families seldom use this instrument. Participants also recognized that families have the right to demand the proper completion of data in the records, since this shows that families are interested in their children's health and also helps in the work of professionals. Child health records are an instrument for monitoring and promoting child health; therefore, their use should be known and valued by professionals and by families.

Abstract Background. X-linked hypophosphatemia (XLH) is a rare, hereditary, progressive, and lifelong phosphate wasting disorder characterized by pathological elevations in fibroblast growth factor (FGF) 23 serum concentration and activity. In the oral cavity, spontaneous abscesses can occur often without any clinical signs of alteration of the causal tooth. The objective of our study was to evaluate the readability of the oral care pathway and the oral quality of life of patients followed in an expert oral medicine department located within a Parisian hospital and working in close collaboration with an endocrinology department expert in this pathology. Methods. This study employed a qualitative descriptive design including semi-structured interviews using guiding themes. Results. Twenty-one patients were included in the study, with an average age of 28 years. The topics discussed exceeded the initial objectives as the patients largely addressed the alteration of their oral and general quality of life, a very chaotic oral health care pathway with oral health professionals not aware of their pathology, consequences on their social, professional, and school integration and access to care complicated by financial factors. Patients reported the importance of having a multidisciplinary team around them, including medical and dental professionals.Conclusions. The variety of manifestations in patients with XLH necessitates a high coordination of multidisciplinary patient care to optimize quality of life and reduce disease burden. Education of oral health professionals on this disease is essential to enable patients to receive the best possible care as early as possible.

Abstract Background The aim of this study was to present the different stages of development of the Schizophrenia Oral Health Profile (SOHP) questionnaire, aimed at assessing oral disorders and their impacts on functioning and psychosocial wellbeing for patients with schizophrenia (PWS) and to give the results of a feasibility study conducted in France Materials and methods The first step of this qualitative study was semi-structured interviews were conducted with 20 PWS and 6 health professionals (HP). A focus group integrating 4 PWS and 4 HP was also organised to identify the items of the SOHP. The data were analysed using a thematic analysis. Second, a feasibility study was conducted in a sample of 30 PWS who answered the SOHP questionnaire. The acceptability and understanding of the SOHP were evaluated, using a specific questionnaire. Results The semi-structured interviews and focus groups included 34 individuals in total. Items’ selection was done with several stages and led to a SOHP scale with 53 final items related to oral disorders and their impacts on functioning and psychosocial well-being. These items were classified in 13 preselected dimensions including one additional module related to the side effects of medications (11 items). The feasibility study showed good acceptability and understanding of the items of the SOHP scale. Conclusions The psychometric validation of the SOHP scale, involving a large sample of PWS, is currently in progress. The SOHP is important to evaluate PWS oral health needs and to offer appropriate strategies to improve oral health of this persons. Trial registration Clinical Trials Gov NCT02730832. Date registered: 21 March, 2016.

Abstract Background Offering equitable access to dental care remains a challenge and methods to risk-stratify individuals to prioritize care could help to attain that goal. The interaction of multiple risk factors associated with oral disease vulnerability can outweigh protective factors conferring resilience and resistance to individuals and their communities; however, there is no validated instrument for measuring oral disease vulnerability. Hence, the objective of this study was to develop a Dental Vulnerability Scale (EVO) for primary health care (PHC) and evaluate its content validity and internal structure. Methods This was a psychometric study conducted in São Paulo, Brazil, in 2019. During content validation, 172 items were evaluated by a panel of 40 judges with diverse background and with the application of the Content Validity Ratio (CVR), considering a critical CVR value> 0.26. During the internal structure evaluation, the EVO was applied to a sample of 1227 individuals in the PHC setting and the results were analyzed using Exploratory and Confirmatory Factor Analysis, in addition to the application of 3 reliability indicators (Cronbach's alpha, McDonald's Omega and Greatest Lower Bound). Results The CVR was 0.33 for relevance and 0.39 for clarity, resulting in 41 items. The final EVO was composed of 4 dimensions (general health, oral health, infrastructure and health services) with a total of 15 items. Factor loadings ranged from 0.37 to 0.96, with R-squared values ranging from 0.14 to 0.91. The reliability indicators values were α = 0.64, ω = 0.99 and GLB=0.82. The Goodness of fit were NNFI = 0,95, CFI = 0,98, GFI = 0,96 and AGFI = 0,97. The EVO instrument was considered valid to be used among oral health professionals in the PHC setting. Conclusions The EVO showed satisfactory psychometric properties and could be employed by health professionals and managers to plan actions and*inform* policies related to oral health. Key messages The EVO could be used to risk-stratify individuals in the PHC setting. The EVO could help to inform oral health policies.

Abstract OBJECTIVE To learn the conceptions and actions of health professionals on the care network for women in situations of violence. METHOD A qualitative, descriptive, exploratory study was conducted between April and July 2015 with the participation of 21 health professionals from four primary health care teams in a city of the central region of the state of Rio Grande do Sul. Data were collected by means of individual semi-structured interviews. Content analysis was used for data systematization. RESULTS Health professionals recognized the importance of the health care network for coping with the problem of violence against women. However, their conceptions and actions were limited by the discoordination or absence of integration among professionals and services of the care network. CONCLUSION The conceptions and actions of health professionals contribute to the discoordination among the services. It is necessary to reflect on the daily practices of care for women in situations of violence.
