International tourism is playing an increasingly important part in the life of all the nine countries of the Baltic region. In this contribution, I analyse the statistical data for 2010—2017 regarding the numbers of arrivals of international tourists and international tourism revenues in the Baltic region. Regional metropolises, which include nine capitals and Saint Petersburg, have a pivotal role in the tourism space of the region. I propose a methodology for empirical research into the attractiveness of ten Baltic cities as perceived by international tourists. This methodology distinguishes three major components in the tourism industry of the Baltic metropolises: hotels, restaurants, and sights. I estimate the attractiveness of these tourism infrastructure components in each of the ten cities using special indicators. Based on the data obtained, I calculate the integrated indicator of city attractiveness. The empirical study shows that, in the Baltic region, international tourists appreciate the most the hotels of Berlin, Warsaw, and Copenhagen, the restaurants of Tallinn, Riga, and Copenhagen, and the sights of Berlin, Stockholm, and Saint Petersburg. The most attractive Baltic cities for inter­national tourists are Berlin, Copenhagen, and Stockholm. Although the sights of Moscow and Saint Petersburg are competitive in the tourist space of the Baltic region, Moscow and Saint Petersburg hotels and restaurants are noticeably inferior to those in other countries of the region.

The purpose of the chapter is to recognize how customers perceive the value proposition content of network companies providing restaurant services. This is theoretical and empirical research in equal measure. The chapter presents the results of the restaurants value proposition study in Saint Petersburg (Russia) according to industry data and identifies the target audience key needs and industry characteristics in the market, semantic core formation, and clustering in order to identify the main criteria affecting the value proposition formation. The study was conducted among 16 chain restaurant holdings located in St. Petersburg, using statistical data based on the marketing statistical tool Google KeyWord Planner analytic database. The results made it possible to highlight key criteria of the value proposition by which consumers make their choice. This approach will allow standardizing decision-making systems on the possibility of identifying the innovative potential of the company's transition to a qualitatively new level of service and use of production resources.

Giant hogweed is one of the most widespread invasive alien species of the Baltic region. The pycnidial fungus, Calophoma complanata is being evaluated as a potential bioherbicide for control of Heracleum sosnowskyi. The aim of this work is to evaluate an ability of the potential mycoherbicide C. complanata MF-32.121 to overwinter in the conditions of Saint Petersburg area. Plants inoculated by C. complanata MF-32.121 successfully survives wintering in the conditions of Saint Petersburg area. Pearl barley covered by C. complanata MF-32.121 mycelium successfully survives wintering in the same conditions as well. When favorable conditions have arisen, the C. complanata MF-32.121 mycelium is capable to infecting young giant hogweed. Moreover, it was revealed that a change in the biochemical composition, namely, an increase in the level of trehalose, contributes to the manifestation of a greater tolerance of C. complanata MF-32.121 mycelium to temperature-humidity conditions.

In this article, we address the little-researched and complicated problems of the genesis, periodisation, and development of political geography and geopolitics as academic and re­search disciplines across the Baltic region in general and the contribution of Saint Peters­burg University in particular. The terms ‘political geography,’ ‘geopolitics’ and the corre­sponding academic disciplines, as well as the first concepts of political geography and geo­politics, emerged in the Baltic. The Russian and German schools of thought made a valuable contribution to these fields of research. Using the historical, structural-genetic, and activity-geospace approaches, we identify and analyse the major historical, research, and academic paradigms in the development of political geography. In doing so, we consider the case of Saint Petersburg University. These paradigms (state-descriptive, anthropogeographical, state-geopolitical, and activity-societal) differ in their methodological frameworks and the­matic priorities. We demonstrate that the term ‘political geography’ and the science it de­notes are of Russian origin, having been developed by German scientists during their aca­demic service for Russia. Further, we analyse the contribution of German and Russian re­searches to the development of the Saint Petersburg school of political geographic and geo­political thought and describe its current state.

Many scholars perceive price competitiveness as a highly relevant element of tourism competitiveness in improving tourism performance. We focused our research interest specifically to understand whether price competitiveness is an important policy instrument in attracting international tourists and their spending. Our empirical study focused on how price competitiveness behaves as a predictor of tourism performance in different economic conditions and whether price competitiveness is a significant cause of tourism competitiveness in improving tourism performance. For that purpose, we conducted empirical analysis within two stages: moderation analysis to understand how price competitiveness influences tourism performance from the point of view of inbound international tourism and how this relationship behaves in different economic conditions; and mediation analysis to understand whether price competitiveness is relevant cause for tourist competitiveness in improving tourism performance. This study has revealed different views about price competitiveness and its influence on the tourism industry. The findings indicate that price competitiveness has rather limited effects on the outcomes of the tourism industry and is not a cause of overall tourism competitiveness in improving tourism performance.

Experience in assessing the COVID-19 pandemic impact on international tourism indicates insufficient attention to changes in geography and volume of international tourist flows. In particular, studies aimed at assessing the value of tourist exchange in cross-border tourist and recreational regions are becoming relevant. The purpose of the article is to classify cross-border tourist and recreational mesoregions in the south-eastern part of the Baltic region by the size of cross-border tourist exchange. As a result of the study, six cross-border tourist and recreational mesoregions were identified with the participation of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania. The boundaries of these mesoregions were determined and the value of cross-border tourist exchange within them was estimated. According to the latter indicator, it is proposed to divide mesoregions into three categories: 1) with a high level of formation (tourist exchange of more than 500 thousand people per year); 2) with a level of formation «above average» (from 100 to 500 thousand people per year); 3) with an average level of formation (from 50 to 100 thousand people per year). Cross-border tourist and recreational regions with a low level of formation (with a tourist exchange of fewer than 50 thousand people per year) are classified as microregions. The first category included the Estonian-Finnish mesoregion, the second – three mesoregions (Russian- Estonian, Russian-Polish-Lithuanian, and Polish-Lithuanian-Belarusian), the third – Russian-Estonian- Latvian and Estonian-Latvian.

Evidentials, as a grammatical means of overtly expressing information source, play a pivotal role in communication, cognition, and speakers’ status within a community. This accounts for their frequent spread in language contact situations. Evidentials often develop as a consequence of areal diffusion. A language surrounded by languages without evidential distinctions is likely to lose evidentials. Evidentials are among the defining features of a number of well-established linguistic areas, among them the Balkans, the Caucasus, and the Baltic region in Eurasia, and the Vaupés River Basin linguistic area in Amazonia. They have made their way into a number of contact varieties of major European languages, including Spanish and Portuguese. An obsolescent language may lose or restructure its evidentiality system depending on the dominant language speakers are shifting to. Further factors propitious for a spread of evidentials in language contact include multilingualism and shared discourse genres and speech practices.
