Introduction: The average age of menarche has declined over the last century but the magnitude of the decline and the factors responsible remain subjects of contention. Aims and Objectives: To study a group with delayed menarche in a cohort of Bengali Indian females with low to normal body weight. To investigate anthropometric characteristics (height, mid-parental height, weight, BMI), Socio-economic Status, Sexual Maturity Rating (SMR) stages and 2D: 4D ratio ( ratio of lengths of second and fourth digits of both hands) in those with delayed menarche. To analyse the correlation of these factors with delayed age of menarche. Materials and Methods: A total of 614 children , aged 11- 16 completed years, of low to middle income family groups and attending suburban schools, were evaluated on the basis of predetermined questionnaire and anthropometric measurements. Correlation of factors with delayed age of menarche was done by appropriate statistical methods Results and Analysis: Out of 190 children having delayed menarche (cases) and 424 children with normal age of menarche (controls) , the height percentile (p value: 0.642), BMI ( p value: 0.091), weight (p value: 0.12)and Mid-Parental Height (p value: 0.26) had no significant correlation , while SMR ( p value:0.00), 2D:4D ratio (p value:0.002) and low Socio-economic Status (p value: 0.00) had a significant correlation with delayed menarche. Conclusion: This study is the first to examine such a wide variety of anthropometric and socio-economic factors at a time in a single cohort of females with delayed menarche. The onset of menarche is part of physical and sexual maturity process. Previous studies have shown that the nutritional status of an adolescenst girl have important influence on the menarche age. The study was designed to determine the age of menarche and its relation to nutritional status of adolescent girls in SMP Negeri 10 Bulukumba. This was an analytical survey with a Cross Sectional Study approach. The sample in this study consisted of 74 people (total sampling), namely all students who had experienced menarche. The result of this study indicate that of the 74 respondents studied, there were 48 respondents had a good nutritional status, 43.75% had experienced normal menarche and 56.25% had experienced abnormal menarche. There were 26 respondents had a malnutrition, 15.38% had experienced normal menarche and 84.62% had experienced abnormal menarche. The results of statistical tests showed that there was an association between the nutritional status and the age at menarche of adolescent girls in SMP Negeri 10 Bulukumba (Pv=0,020; OR= 4,28). It is concluded that nutritional status is significantly associated with the age at menarche in adolesence. A good nutritional status in adolescent girls will experience puberty normally, resulting in normal and uninterrupted menstruation.

Background: Child malnutrition is one of the most vital global health problems concerning in most of the poor communities leading to high morbidity and mortality. Various studies have highlighted the relation-ship between socioeconomic status and nutrition levels of primary school children. The present study focuses on socioeconomic inequality resulting in risk of malnutrition. Objectives of the Study were to find the Impact of socio-economic factors on nutritional status in primary school children. Methods: A cross sectional survey of 281 children, aged 6-10 years were selected from remote primary school in Purulia were used in the study. the primary schools were randomly selected. The studied variables included; Age, sex of the pupils, parents’ socio-economic status and family size of selected House Holds. Interview of pupils and parents was carried out using prepared Nordic questionnaire template. Weight and height of the children were measured. and Body Mass Index (BMI) was calculated by standard method. Data was analyzed using Microsoft excel, SPSS version 8.0 .The chi-square significance of association was deter-mined at Level of significance less than 0.05. Results: The proportion of girls and boys are 55.8% and 44.2% respectively. The nutritional status of children from lower socio economic class was poor as com-pared to their counter parts came from upper socio economic class. Children with BMI <5th percentile were 30.9% in low class while in high class it was only 12.1%. Prevalence of malnutrition was 41.9% among children of family size>4 as compare to 16.4% in those of House Holds had family size<5. During comparison of the studied children with children of same age group of overall West Bengal from NNMB survey, 2002, the first group had lower BMI than the second group. Conclusion: Poverty, low literacy rate, large families, food insecurity, food safety, appears to be the important factors responsible for poor health status of children from low socioeconomic class. Efforts should be given for exploring knowledge about nutritional needs during childhood, and creating nutritional and health awareness among young rural children to ensure a better quality of life for the next generation.International Journal of Occupational Safety and Health, Vol 4 No 2 (2014) 15 – 18

A study of 352 randomly selected secondary school girls in an urban population in Southern Western Nigeria revealed a mean menarcheal age of 13.94 ± 1.31 years and that 76.8% of girls attained menarche between ages 13 and 15 years. Age-matched pre- and post-menarcheal girls did not differ significantly in biophysical measurements, however, nutritional status was strongly and positively associated with attainment of menarche. School girls from the upper socio-economic class reached menarche 11 months earlier than the lower socio-economic counterparts. A significant finding of this study is that the declaration rate in age at menarche was slowest in girls from high socio-economic households. This deceleration was not influenced by body mass suggesting that socio-economic factors play a unique role in the secular trend widely reported in menarcheal age.

<p>Menarche is the first menstrual period in the middle of puberty. There are many factors that affect the age of menarche include nutritional status, genetic, environmental conditions, socioeconomic status, and education. The purpose of this research is to determine the relationship between nutritional status and age of menarche on female student of junior high school Ali Maksum Krapyak, Bantul, Yogyakarta. The research employed a cross sectional research design. The number of this sample was 81 female students that determined by total sampling. The statistical test used was Chi Square. The results of this research showed that there was a relationship between nutritional status and the age of menarche on female student of junior high school Ali Maksum Krapyak, Bantul, Yogyakarta (p value = 0.002) and the ratio prevalence was 3.077 (95% CI = 1.675 – 5.650); it means that respondents who have abnormal nutritional status get 3.007 times greater chance of experiencing abnormal menarche than respondents who have normal nutritional status.</p>
