Functional Movement Screen® (FMS®) permite evaluar la funcionalidad del movimiento del atleta. La funcionalidad del movimiento en nadadores jóvenes de élite y no élite puede predecir el rendimiento futuro. El propósito de este estudio es comparar las puntuaciones de FMS® entre nadadores jóvenes de élite y no élite, y verificar su relación con el rendimiento de estilo libre de 100 m. Treinta y dos nadadores de élite (edad: 14,99 ± 0,13 años; altura: 1,71 ± 0,02 m; masa corporal: 61,28 ± 1,27 kg; Puntos de la Federación Internacional de Natación [FINA]: 651,59 ± 6,44) y 17 nadadores no élite (edad : 14,65 ± 0,19 años; altura: 165,12 ± 2,03 cm; masa corporal: 57,22 ± 2,43 kg; puntos FINA: 405,71 ± 21,41) se ofrecieron como voluntarios para participar en este estudio transversal. Se consideraron para el análisis los puntajes FMS® de prueba individual, el puntaje compuesto FMS® y los puntos FINA. Los nadadores de élite lograron valores mas elevados en Deep Squat (p = 0.005; ES = 0.99), Right Hurdle Step (p = 0.005; ES = 0.99), Left Hurdle Step (p = 0.002; ES = 1.08), Trunk Stability Push Up (p <0.001 ; ES = 1.44) y puntajes compuestos de FMS® (p <0.001; ES = 1.35) en comparación con nadadores que no son de élite. Las puntuaciones compuestas de FMS® se relacionaron positivamente con el rendimiento de estilo libre de 100 m (r = 0.596, r2 = 40.9%, p <0.001). Los nadadores jóvenes que no son de élite revelan déficits funcionales en tareas que involucran movilidad de caderas, rodillas y tobillos, y estabilización del núcleo y la columna vertebral. Mayor funcionalidad de movimiento está positivamente relacionada con el rendimiento de estilo libre de 100 m. Los entrenadores de natación deben considerar estos déficits y su relación con el rendimiento para diferenciar la prescripción de ejercicio entre estas poblaciones. Thirty-two elite swimmers (age: 14.99 ± 0.13 years old; height: 1.71 ± 0.02 m; body mass: 61.28 ± 1.27 kg; Fédération Internationale de Natation [FINA] points: 651.59 ± 6.44) and 17 non-elite swimmers (age: 14.65 ± 0.19 years old; height: 165.12 ± 2.03 cm; body mass: 57.22 ± 2.43 kg; FINA points: 405.71 ± 21.41) volunteered to participate in this cross-sectional study. Individual-test FMS® scores, FMS® composite score and FINA points were considered for analysis. Elite swimmers achieved higher Deep Squat (p = 0.005; ES = 0.99), Right Hurdle Step (p = 0.005; ES = 0.99), Left Hurdle Step (p = 0.002; ES = 1.08), Trunk Stability Push Up (p < 0.001; ES = 1.44) and FMS® composite (p < 0.001; ES = 1.35) scores compared to non-elite swimmers. FMS® composite scores were positively related with 100m freestyle performance (r = 0.596, r2 = 40.9%, p < 0.001). Young non-elite swimmers reveal functional deficits in tasks involving mobility of the hips, knees and ankles, and stabilization of the core and spine. Higher movement functionality is positively related with 100m freestyle performance. Swimming coaches should consider this deficits and their relationship with performance to differentiate exercise prescription between this populations. Jovens nadadores do grupo não-elite revelam défices funcionais em tarefas que envolvem mobilidade das ancas, joelhos e tornozelos e estabilização do núcleo e da coluna. A maior funcionalidade de movimento está positivamente relacionada ao desempenho de 100m estilo livre. Os treinadores de natação devem considerar esses défices e sua relação com o desempenho para diferenciar a prescrição de exercícios entre essas populações.

  Objetivo: Valorar la calidad de movimiento aplicando el Functional Movement Screen (FMS) en adolescentes de 12 a 17 años practicantes o no de Gimnasia Acrobática (GA). Método: Estudio descriptivo, comparativo y transversal donde participaron 41 adolescentes (20 practicantes de GA y 21 no practicantes). Se usó la batería FMS, compuesta por siete pruebas: sentadilla profunda, paso de valla, estocada en línea, movilidad de hombro, elevación activa de la pierna recta, estabilidad del tronco en flexiones, estabilidad rotatoria del tronco. Resultados: se observó una relación estadísticamente significativa de signo positivo a través del estadístico R de Spearman, entre la puntuación global del FMS y la práctica de GA (p= .023). Las gimnastas presentan mejor calidad de movimiento que las no practicantes, con diferencias estadísticamente significativas, puntuando mejor en prácticamente todas las pruebas. Conclusión: se corrobora una relación entre la práctica de GA y una mayor puntuación del FMS.  Abstract. Objective: To assess the quality of movement by applying the Functional Movement Screen (FMS) to teenagers aged 12 to 17, whether or not they practice Acrobatic Gymnastics (AG). Methods: Descriptive, comparative and cross-sectional study in which 41 teenagers (20 AG practitioners and 21 non-practitioners) participated. The FMS battery was used, consisting of seven tests: deep squat, fence step, line lunge, shoulder mobility, active straight leg lift, trunk stability in bending, trunk rotation stability. Results: a statistically significant positive relationship was observed through Spearman's R statistic, between the overall FMS score and the AG practice (p= .023). Gymnasts presented better quality of movement than non-gymnastics practitioners, with statistically significant differences, scoring better in practically all tests. Conclusion: a relationship between AG practice and a higher FMS score is corroborated.

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk memberikan informasi tentang  instrument test yang berfungsi untuk mengukur komponen kondisi fisik mobilitas, keseimbangan, dan stabilitas atlet yang mengalami atau yang sudah pernah terkena cedera otot dan tulang sendi. Komponen tes FMS terdiri dari in-line lunge, hurdle step, deep squat, shoulder mobility, active straight-leg raise, trunk stability push-up, rotary stability Berbagai hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa: (1) adanya hubungan antara atlet yang mengalami cedera otot dengan tes FMS, (2) tidak adanya hubungan, dan (3) adanya hubungan yang signifikan pada atlet yang mengalami cedera terhadap mobilitas, keseimbangan, dan stabilitas yang diukur dengan FMS, dan  (4) adanya pengaruh tes tersebut akan tetapi dengan sampel tertentu (usia). Hal ini dapat disimpulkan bahwa bahwa perlunya  dilakukan penelitian ulang dengan memperhatikan berbagai aspek (usia, jenis kelamin, dan profesi). Hal tersebut diharapkan FMS dapat digunakan pada penelitian kondisi fisik (strength and conditioning)

Context: Sports injuries are more common when players are fatigued and occur more frequently at the end of matches; therefore, determining the right time for employing an injury screening test is important. Objective: To determine the role of timing (prematch vs postmatch fatigue) on the functional movement screen (FMS) scores, a frequently used injury risk screening method. Design: Cross-sectional study. Setting: Field. Participants: Twenty-four women soccer players from a professional team were included. Main Outcome Measures: The players were evaluated with a visual analog scale for perceived fatigue and with the FMS. Assessments were conducted before and after a 60-minute match. Results: The subtest scores for deep squat, hurdle line, in-line lunge, trunk stability push-up, and the total FMS scores showed a significant decrease following the match (P < .05). Compared with prematch, the number of players who could achieve the highest score of 3/3 postmatch was lower for all subtests except right shoulder mobility. Conclusions: Our results suggest a negative relationship between perceived fatigue level and performance on the deep squat, hurdle line, in-line lunge, and trunk stability push-up subtest scores and in the total FMS score. Therefore, the authors suggest that screening tests such as the FMS should be employed following a match when players present with fatigue.

Context: The deep squat (DS) test is a component of the functional movement screen, which is used to assess the quality of fundamental movement patterns; however, the accuracy of the DS has not been studied. The DS is a complex, total body movement pattern with evaluation required at several points along the kinematic chain. Objective: To assess the accuracy of DS scoring by an athletic trainer, physical therapist, and exercise science professional via a comparative analysis with kinematic data (KD) and to identify scoring criteria that would improve agreement between raters and KD scores. Design: Cross-sectional study. Setting: Motion analysis laboratory. Participants: A rater from each of 3 movement science disciplines rated the DS of 23 male college athletes (20.3 [1.2] y; 70.5 [3.5] kg). Interventions: Subjects were outfitted with reflective markers and asked to perform the DS. The DS performance was scored by 3 raters and kinematic analysis. Subsequently, the optimal set of criteria that minimized the difference between mode rater score and KD was determined via a Nelder–Mead simplex optimization routine. Main Outcome Measures: Intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs) were calculated using SPSS (version 23; IBM, Armonk, NY) to determine tester agreement with the KD score and between the mode score and KD score. Results: Agreement was poor for the athletic trainer (ICC = .387), physical therapist (ICC = .298), exercise science professional (ICC = .378), and raters’ DS scores when compared with the KD. Agreement was poor for the mode score when compared with KD prior to optimization and good following optimization (ICC = .830), thereby allowing identification of specific scoring errors. Conclusions: Agreement for DS scores is poor when compared with KD; however, it may be improved with optimization of DS scoring criteria.

ContextResearch is limited regarding the effects of injury or surgery history and sex on the Functional Movement Screen (FMS) and Y Balance Test (YBT).ObjectiveTo determine if injury or surgery history or sex affected results on the FMS and YBT.DesignCross-sectional study.SettingAthletic training facilities.Patients or Other ParticipantsA total of 200 National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I female (n = 92; age = 20.0 ± 1.4 years, body mass index = 22.8 ± 3.1 kg/m2) and male (n = 108; age = 20.0 ± 1.5 years, body mass index = 27.0 ± 4.6 kg/m2) athletes were screened; 170 completed the FMS, and 190 completed the YBT.Intervention(s)A self-reported questionnaire identified injury or surgery history and sex. The FMS assessed movement during the patterns of deep squat, hurdle step, in-line lunge, shoulder mobility, impingement-clearing test, straight-leg raise, trunk stability push-up, press-up clearing test, rotary stability, and posterior-rocking clearing test. The YBT assessed balance while participants reached in anterior, posteromedial, and posterolateral directions.Main Outcome Measure(s)The FMS composite score (CS; range, 0–21) and movement pattern score (range, 0–3), the YBT CS (% lower extremity length), and YBT anterior, posteromedial, and posterolateral asymmetry (difference between limbs in centimeters). Independent-samples t tests established differences in mean FMS CS, YBT CS, and YBT asymmetry. The Mann-Whitney U test identified differences in FMS movement patterns.ResultsWe found lower overall FMS CSs for the following injuries or surgeries: hip (injured = 12.7 ± 3.1, uninjured = 14.4 ± 2.3; P = .005), elbow (injured = 12.1 ± 2.8, uninjured = 14.3 ± 2.4; P = .02), and hand (injured = 12.3 ± 2.9, uninjured = 14.3 ± 2.3; P = .006) injuries and shoulder surgery (surgery = 12.0 ± 1.0, no surgery = 14.3 ± 2.4; P &lt; .001). We observed worse FMS movement pattern performance for knee surgery (rotary stability: P = .03), hip injury (deep squat and hurdle: P &lt; .042 for both), hip surgery (hurdle and lunge: P &lt; .01 for both), shoulder injury (shoulder and hand injury: P &lt; .02 for both), and shoulder surgery (shoulder: P &lt; .02). We found better FMS movement pattern performance for trunk/back injury (deep squat: P = .02) and ankle injury (lunge: P = .01). Female athletes performed worse in FMS movement patterns for trunk (P &lt; .001) and rotary (P = .01) stability but better in the lunge (P = .008), shoulder mobility (P &lt; .001), and straight-leg raise (P &lt; .001). Anterior asymmetry was greater for male athletes (P = .02).ConclusionsInjury history and sex affected FMS and YBT performance. Researchers should consider adjusting for confounders.

Background: CrossFit is a popular and unique exercise training programme and competition. Despite the popularity of this training programme there is a high incidence of injury amongst the athletes. The Functional Movement Screen™ (FMS™) is a pre-participation assessment which grades seven tests which screen fundamental movement patterns of athletes to possibly predict future injury. No studies have successfully looked at the use of the FMS™ to predict injury in CrossFit athletes. Aims: The aim of this study is to establish the normative values of the FMS™, which have yet to be determined for CrossFit athletes, and to determine the use of these values as a predictor for future injury. Methods: The methodology included scoring 61 CrossFit athletes using the FMS™ one month prior the “United We Stand (UWS) Games 2017”. Additionally, the athletes were required to fill out a questionnaire which was used to assess for additional risk factors for injury. The athletes were thereafter tracked documenting CrossFit specific injury over the course of the one month training period that lead up to and included participation in the “UWS Games 2017” in order to compile a injury profile. The mean FMS™ was then compared to the injuries sustained. Results: The research sample revealed that the mean FMS™ score for CrossFit athletes was 17.73 out of 21. There was no significant link between the mean value when compared to the injury rates and this was therefore not a predictor of injury. There were significant findings that showed that using components of the FMS™ as a method of injury prediction in CrossFit athletes was possible; specifically, a low trunk stability push-up test score increased the likelihood of sustaining injury and previous injury negatively impacted the shoulder mobility test. Further findings suggested that Body Mass Index (BMI) negatively impacted the performance of the FMS™, and the boxes with which the athletes were affiliated, influenced the total FMS™ scores. The most common types of injuries recorded were joint dysfunction and muscle strain and the most common locations of injury were the shoulder, knee and lower back. Conclusions: Aspects of the FMS™ were a statistically significant predictor of injury in CrossFit athletes, specifically that of the shoulder mobility test and the trunk stability push-up test. Other findings concluded that factors such as the BMI and the box that athletes trained under influenced the FMS™ outcome. The normative value of 17.73 out of 21 for the FMS™ was provided as reference values for CrossFit athletes in order to assist with the interpretation of future scores when screening athletes.

Abstract Background The established aim of the Saudi Health Electronic Surveillance Network (HESN) is to support the prevention and control of different health events, and to facilitate the delivery of other public health programs. This study aims to evaluate the perceptions of active HESN users regarding its general performance through five major components: practicability, design, data and communication, technical support, and general impression. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted in 2016 using a sample of active HESN users. Out of 1535 active users, 700 were randomly selected. A predesigned electronic questionnaire was sent to each participant via email which was completed by 485 participants. Different composite scores were calculated and compared to the sociodemographic and other technical variables. Results The mean age of the participants was 36.92 ± 9.12 (24–65 years), and 57.8% of the sample were male. Riyadh and the KSA’s eastern province represented the highest two regions of participation, at (18.4%) and (14.2%) participants, respectively. About 70.8% were generally satisfied with HESN, while 86.6%% believed that it is better than the traditional paper-work system. Participants who used to work more frequently expressed more level of satisfaction compared to those with minimal use per week or month (P ≤ 0.001). Internet speed displayed a significant association with the general level of satisfaction with HESN (P < 0.001). Additionally, users who accessed HESN with the Google Chrome browser displayed higher levels of satisfaction when compared to users who relied on other browsers (P = 0.003). Conclusion Presently, the level of user satisfaction with HESN is reasonable. However, to achieve optimal outcomes for HESN usage, improvements should be considered.
