Aim. To highlight the distinguished names and dates of scientific activity of Ukrainian scientists who were born and educated in Ukraine and who have enriched with their scientific achievements the world biological and medical sciences. Methods. Study of biobibliographic editions, in particular personal indexes and important sources of basic scientific researches, which record the achievements of Ukrainian scientists, as well as summarize their contributions to the national and world science, culture, information about education. Results. The published information about the activity of Ukrainian scientists is of undeniable interest to all who are interested in the achievements of world and Ukrainian biological science. It is emphasized that the scientist is not only a researcher, worker and creator of the new, but also a fighter. All the life of a scientist - the struggle for the achievement of this goal, for the disclosure of the secrets of nature, for the recognition of their works, discoveries, laws, for their promulgation and approval. Unfortunately, we cannot cover the whole list of well-known Ukrainian scientists, since great people are brilliant, but we hope that every prominent scientist will not be forgotten. Conclusions. Biographies of prominent scientists from Ukraine will help them to get into their worldview, to feel the unbridled passion of the research, to understand the way they think, to trace the way in which they came to their discoveries. It is our duty to know our history, our luminaries of science, technology, and culture. Keywords: Ukraine, scientists, biologists, doctors, researchers.

By actively seeking out opportunities to bring art into traditionally STEM-focused activity, and vice-versa, we are deliberately increasing the diversity of the environment. Makerspace services and activities, to the extent they are open and visibly accessible to all, are a natural for the spontaneous development of trans-disciplinary collaboration. Within the spaces of the library, opportunities to connect individuals around shared avocational interest might range from music and spontaneous performance areas to spaces salted with LEGO bricks and jigsaw puzzles; the potential connections between our resources and the members of our communities are as diverse as their interests. Indeed, when a practitioner from one discipline can interact and engage with others from across the STEAM spectrum, the world becomes a richer place – and maybe, just maybe, we can fan the flames of curiosity along the way.

The article is dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the Doctor of Medical Sciences (MD), Professor Anatoly Andree- vich Babanin. The article highlights the main events in the life of the famous scientist, lists the main achievements and scientific achievements. The life and scientific activities of Anatoly Andreevich are inextricably linked with the Crimean Medical Institute (University), within the walls of which the future professor first received a higher medical education, and then, after years of successful scientific activity, headed the university as a rector for many years. Thanks to the talented leadership, the Crimean Medical University has reached a high level of scientific and technological develop- ment and international recognition. For long productive work and scientific achievements, Professor A.A. Babanin awarded numerous government and international awards and titles, and currently continues active work for the benefit of higher medical education in Crimea.

December 10, 2021 marks the 90th anniversary of the birth and 65 years of the scientific activity of Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor Felix Ivanovich Ershov. F.I. Ershov is a prominent scientist-virologist, popularizer of science, known in our country and abroad, one of the leading experts on the problem of interferon and its inducers. Staff members of the National Research Center for Epidemiology and Microbiology named after Honorary Academician N.F. AbstractThis article highlights the scientific achievements, professional career, and personal interactions of Malcolm B. Segal who passed away in July this year. Born in 1937 in Goodmayes, Essex, UK, Segal rose to the Chairman position in the Division of Physiology at United Medical and Dental School of Guy’s and St. Thomas’ Hospitals, retiring in 2006 after his long professional career in biomedical science. Being trained in Hugh Davson’s laboratory, Segal became one of the pioneers in research on cerebrospinal fluid physiology and the choroid plexus. During the course of his career, Segal himself trained a number of young scientists and collaborated with many colleagues around the world, making long-lasting friendships along the way. In addition to his professional accomplishments as a researcher and educator, Segal was an avid sailor and wine connoisseur, and enjoyed teaching classes on navigation and wine tasting.

I agree with much of Freeman and Reichart’s paper; so, by way of comment, I will simply supplement his argument in two ways. First, agreeing with their conclusion that we can, and should, re-direct business toward environmental protection without embracing a nonanthropocentric ethic, I will show that the pre-occupation of recent and contemporary environmental ethics with the anthropocentrism/non-anthropocentrism debate is avoidable. It rests on a misinterpretation of possible moral responses to the arrogance with which Western science, technology, and culture has treated nature. A better understanding of the history of the idea of nonanthropocentrism will, I believe, strengthen Freeman and Reichart’s case for pluralism in environmental ethics and values. Second, I will emphasize several points that seem to me to fit well with Freeman and Reichart’s approach, and which would provide important detailing for the type of approach he sketches, arguing that much hard intellectual work stands between us and a satisfactory, and useful, but pluralistic, and life-centered ethic for business and the environment.

Abstract. This research took place just after the end of the protests following the killing of a 16-year-old boy by a policeman in Greece in December 2008. Participants (N = 224) were 16-year-olds in different schools in Attiki. Informed by the Politicized Collective Identity Model ( Simon & Klandermans, 2001 ), a questionnaire measuring grievances, adversarial attributions, emotions, vulnerability, identifications with students and activists, and questions about justice and Greek society in the future, as well as about youngsters’ participation in different actions, was completed. Four profiles of the participants emerged from a cluster analysis using representations of the conflict, emotions, and identifications with activists and students. These profiles differed on beliefs about the future of Greece, participants’ economic vulnerability, and forms of participation. Importantly, the clusters corresponded to students from schools of different socioeconomic areas. The results indicate that the way young people interpret the events and the context, their levels of identification, and the way they represent society are important factors of their political socialization that impacts on their forms of participation. Political socialization seems to be related to youngsters’ position in society which probably constitutes an important anchoring point of their interpretation of the world.

Restrained Airs: The Diegetic Surface and Nondiegetic Depth of British Film Music

This article considers how pre-existing music has been employed in British cinema, paying particular attention to the diegetic/nondiegetic boundary and notions of restraint. It explores the significance of the distinction between diegetic music, which exists in the world of the narrative, and nondiegetic music, which does not. It analyses the use of pre-existing operatic music in two British films of the same era and genre: Kind Hearts and Coronets (1949) and The Importance of Being Earnest (1952), and demonstrates how seemingly subtle variations in the way music is used in these films produce markedly different effects. Specifically, it investigates the meaning of the music in its original context and finds that only when this bears a narrative relevance to the film does it cross from the diegetic to the nondiegetic plane. This reveals that whereas music restricted to the diegetic plane may express the outward projection of the characters' emotions, music also heard on the nondiegetic track may reveal a deeper truth about their feelings. In this way, the meaning of the music varies depending upon how it is used. While these two films may differ in whether or not their pre-existing music occupies a nondiegetic or diegetic position in relation to the narrative, both are characteristic of this era of British film-making in using music in an understated manner which expresses a sense of emotional restraint and which marks the films with a particularly British inflection.

The world-wide use of scleral contact lenses has dramatically increased over the past 10 year and has changed the way that we manage patients with corneal irregularity. Successfully fitting them can be challenging especially for eyes that have significant asymmetries of the cornea or sclera. The future of scleral lens fitting is utilizing corneo-scleral topography to accurately measure the anterior ocular surface and then using software to design lenses that identically match the scleral surface and evenly vault the cornea. This process allows the practitioner to efficiently fit a customized scleral lens that successfully provides the patient with comfortable wear and improved vision.

RESUMENEl trabajo examina críticamente la afirmación central de la hermenéutica de Paul Ricoeur, a saber, que el soporte material de la escritura es el rasgo determinante para que una secuencia discursiva sea considerada como un texto. La escritura cancela las condiciones fácticas de la enunciación y crea, de este modo, un ámbito de sentido estable en el que se puede validar una concepción de la subjetividad que está implicada en las dos estrategias de lecturas (el análisis estructural y la apropiación), esto es, un sujeto pasivo que se constituye por la idealidad del significado. Asimismo, el trabajo intentará precisar una serie de ambigüedades en el uso que Ricoeur hace del «ser en el mundo» para sostener la referencialidad del discurso.PALABRAS CLAVETEXTO, ESCRITURA, REFERENCIA, SUBJETIVIDAD, MUNDOABSTRACTThis paper critically examines the main assertion of Paul Ricoeur´s hermeneutics, i.e., that the material base of writing is the determining feature to consider a discursive sequence as a text. Writing cancels the factual conditions of enunciation and creates, in this way, a background of stable meaning where it is possible to validate a conception of subjectivity implicated in the two reading strategies (the structural analysis and the appropriation), i.e., a passive subject constituted by the ideality of meaning.
