<div class="page" title="Page 1"><div class="layoutArea"><div class="column"><p><span>In the 2010’s it is widely recognized by computer and information scientists, social scientists, designers, and philosophers of technology that the design of information systems is not value neutral [5-8,11]. Rather, such systems are value laden in part because societal values are major factors in shaping systems, and at the same time the design of the technology reinforces, restructures or uproots societal value structures. Of the many theories and methods to design for this phenomenon one continues to gain traction for its systematic and overarching consideration of values in the design process: Value Sensitive Design (VSD) [5-7]. The aim of this multidisciplinary workshop is to bring together scholars and practitioners interested in ways values can be made to bear upon design and to help continue to build a community by sharing experiences, insights, and criticism. </span></p></div></div></div>

Abstract Although previous scholars have used image data to answer important political science questions, less attention has been paid to video-based measures. In this study, I use motion detection to understand the extent to which members of Congress (MCs) literally cross the aisle, but motion detection can be used to study a wide range of political phenomena, like protests, political speeches, campaign events, or oral arguments. I find not only are Democrats and Republicans less willing to literally cross the aisle, but this behavior is also predictive of future party voting, even when previous party voting is included as a control. However, this is one of the many ways motion detection can be used by social scientists. In this way, the present study is not the end, but the beginning of an important new line of research in which video data is more actively used in social science research.

Bridge health monitoring is increasingly relevant for the maintenance of existing structures or new structures with innovative concepts that require validation of design predictions. In the United States there are more than 600,000 highway bridges. Nearly half of them (46.4%) are rated as fair while about 1 out of 13 (7.6%) is rated in poor condition. As such, the United States is one of those countries in which bridge health monitoring systems are installed in order to complement conventional periodic nondestructive inspections. This paper reviews the challenges associated with bridge health monitoring related to the detection of specific bridge characteristics that may be indicators of anomalous behavior. The methods used to detect loss of stiffness, time-dependent and temperature-dependent deformations, fatigue, corrosion, and scour are discussed. Owing to the extent of the existing scientific literature, this review focuses on systems installed in U.S. bridges over the last 20 years. These are all major factors that contribute to long-term degradation of bridges. Issues related to wireless sensor drifts are discussed as well. The scope of the paper is to help newcomers, practitioners, and researchers at navigating the many methodologies that have been proposed and developed in order to identify damage using data collected from sensors installed in real structures.

AbstractBiobased production has been promoted as a sustainable alternative to fossil resources. However, controversies over its impact on sustainability highlight societal concerns, value tensions and uncertainties that have not been taken into account during its development. In this work, the consideration of stakeholders’ values in a biorefinery design project is investigated. Value sensitive design (VSD) is a promising approach to the design of technologies with consideration of stakeholders’ values, however, it is not directly applicable for complex systems like biorefineries. Therefore, some elements of VSD, such as the identification of relevant values and their connection to a technology’s features, are brought into biorefinery design practice. Midstream modulation (MM), an approach to promoting the consideration of societal aspects during research and development activities, is applied to promote reflection and value considerations during the design decision making. As result, it is shown that MM interventions during the design process led to new design alternatives in support of stakeholders' values, and allowed to recognize and respond to emerging value tensions within the scope of the project. In this way, the present work shows a novel approach for the technical investigation of VSD, especially for biorefineries. Also, based on this work it is argued that not only reflection, but also flexibility and openness are important for the application of VSD in the context of biorefinery design.

The many systemic failures abetting Trump’s ascendance—as well as more recent election- and pandem-ic-related conspiracies—were decades in the making. The existing approach to requirements extraction is that the requirements are formed by the system developer through direct interaction with the customer using a number of methods (for example, interviewing; prototyping; analysis of use cases; user stories; seminars, etc.). In this case, most often the requirements are formed by the developer himself, taking into account the opinion of the customer’s representative. The disadvantage of the existing approach is the problem of loss of knowledge transferred from the customer’s representatives to the developer, which results in the failure of projects, which is recorded by the existing statistics. As statistical studies show, more than half of projects for the creation of information systems (IS) are failures or require changes (in terms of budget, time and customer satisfaction). In modern research in the field of__ design and development of information systems, there is a tendency to involve the end user (customer) in the design process. To develop this idea, an approach is proposed to involve the user in the process of extracting requirements, where the developer will no longer be the person forming the requirements. The main idea of the approach is to develop special tools that allow you to independently transform the customer’s natural language into such a form of representation of the model of the process of solving professional problems, from which an interface will be built, which will allow extracting functional requirements from the unity (process model and interface).

Information systems are key enablers for the integration and reliable management of the product development process. Information systems are the backbone that connects various sub-processes and enables flexible product customization. Fast, robust, and cost-efficient product adaptation is especially important in one-of-a-kind production. This paper presents a transformation of the product development design process for large power transformers into a competitive and smartly supported process. One-of-a-kind production is specific, as each product must be customized, wherefore a robust design process well supported by IT plays a key role in creating a digital twin and the product’s final value. Based on a systematic analysis of the sample company, this paper proposes a model for the complete renewal of information systems and of working methodology, where reorganization is demonstrated in an increase of overall effectiveness.

The people of West Kalimantan Province have a great interest in fashion. This can be seen from the many facilities available to meet the needs of fashion and the emergence of young designers in the fashion sector, especially in Pontianak City. This of course must be balanced with education about the basics of fashion design knowledge and techniques in order to produce higher quality designers, and supported by marketing and promotion facilities to develop the creativity of fashion actors. The Fashion Center is an alternative to making all fashion activities carried out in one location, related to commercial activities, promotion, education and production to accommodate a place for fashion actors to work as well as interesting creations for visitors, especially in the Pontianak City area. The design process of the Fashion Center uses the J.C. Jones, who starts with an idea that is equipped with information, is then analyzed to produce concepts that match the initial idea and then evaluated. The concept in the design is semi-outdoor with interconnected spatial arrangement and placement of circulation paths. Provision of green open space around the circulation path.

In architecture, tacit knowledge plays a substantial role in both the design process and its reception. The essays in this book explore the tacit dimension of architecture in its aesthetic, material, cultural, design-based, and reflexive understanding of what we build. Tacit knowledge, described in 1966 by Michael Polanyi as what we ‘can know but cannot tell’, often denotes knowledge that escapes quantifiable dimensions of research. Much of architecture’s knowledge resides beneath the surface, in nonverbal instruments such as drawings and models that articulate the spatial imagination of the design process. Awareness of the tacit dimension helps to understand the many facets of the spaces we inhabit, from the ideas of the architect to the more hidden assumptions of our cultures. Beginning in the studio, where students are guided into becoming architects, the book follows a path through the tacit knowledge present in materials, conceptual structures, and the design process, revealing how the tacit dimension leads to craftsmanship and the situated knowledge of architecture-in-the-world.
