When someone fails to achieve their potential, it is called underachievement. This phenomenon is predominantly observed for adolescent, particularly during the transition to middle school. This finding is observed because they are obligated to adapt to many internal and external changes. Several studies have confirmed that underachievement is caused by poor self-regulated learning skills. In this study, researchers adapted the Self-Regulation Empowerment Program (SREP) to help  middle school student improve their self-regulation skills in learning. This program focuses on increasing the knowledge (cognitive domain) on self-regulated learning at the forethought phase by the means of SREP. This research adopts a single-case experimental design, particularly the A-B design. The analysis is performed by observing how well the participant performs in terms of success indicators, comparison between pretest and posttest scores, and qualitative analysis. Hence, the participant could achieve all success indicators in each session. This intervention program is effective in increasing knowledge on self-regulated learning at the forethought phase in empowerment and goal setting aspects. However, it is not effective in improving the time-management aspect. The procedures in this intervention can be adapted by parent and teachers to help the participant in improving their self-regulated learning ability.

The purpose of this qualitative descriptive case study is to benefit our understanding of the potential of online homework as it relates to developing and supporting students’ self-regulated learning (SRL). This descriptive case study explores the use of self-regulated learning (SRL) strategies reported by students in the context of completing online mathematics homework (OHW). Eighth-grade students (10 total) from a traditional middle school were interviewed using a validated data collection instrument, the Self-Regulated Learning Interview Schedule or SRLIS (Zimmerman & Martinez-Pons, 1986, 1988). Students’ open-ended responses were interpreted using a framework of self-regulation theory and coded using 14 self-regulation strategies to identify the strategies used and to understand differences or similarities among students among different achievement groups (low or high). Students reported using a variety of SRL strategies while completing OHW. All but two students reported goal-setting and planning and seeking social assistance (from teachers, adults, and peers). Additionally, this study identified two new categories of seeking non-social assistance—online resources in general and those from the Khan Academy in particular. Among achievement groups, students in the high-achievement group reported greater use of the cognitive SRL strategy organizing and transforming, whereas students in the low-achievement group had more recurrent reports of no strategy. Students in the low-achievement group reported use of the motivational SRL strategies, environmental structuring and self-consequences, whereas students in the high-achievement group reported no use of motivational SRL strategies, but instead reported parent-initiated involvement.

The study's aim was to develop two different intervention programs and to evaluate their contribution to students' self-regulated learning and academic achievement in Latin classes. The concept of our study referred to a process-focused model of self-regulated learning that divides the phases of the self-regulated learning process into different areas, which we applied to domain-specific translation strategies. Within a pre-, post-, and follow-up-test design with 109 tenth graders, self-regulated learning skills and translation competency as well as translation strategy application were assessed using both a self-regulation questionnaire and a standardized translation test. Three different conditions were compared: (a) combined training group (ComG): self-regulated learning and translation, (b) translation training only (TG), and (c) control group (CG). The intervention consisted of nine sessions spread over a period of three weeks. Results of analyses of variance with time as a repeated measurement indicated interaction effects between time and groups for self-regulated learning in favor of the intervention groups. The ComG showed marginally higher self-regulatory skills than the TG. Regarding the translation competencies as well as the strategy application, the results revealed significant training effects in comparison to the control group, with the TG showing the highest increase.

It is crucial for students to bear the ability of self-access for effective learning. Abilities of students’ self-access should be trained on basis of the connotation of self-access ability, with the start of training students’ self-direction, self-monitoring, self-regulation and self-accessment abilities. Ways and measurements of self-access training are to be made considering the relationship between knowledge, skills and abilities, and following the theoretical basis of students’ self-access ability training. Cognition guidance measures are best choice.

Abstract Problem-solving tasks form the backbone of STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) curricula. Yet, how to improve self-monitoring and self-regulation when learning to solve problems has received relatively little attention in the self-regulated learning literature (as compared with, for instance, learning lists of items or learning from expository texts). Here, we review research on fostering self-regulated learning of problem-solving tasks, in which mental effort plays an important role. First, we review research showing that having students engage in effortful, generative learning activities while learning to solve problems can provide them with cues that help them improve self-monitoring and self-regulation at an item level (i.e., determining whether or not a certain type of problem needs further study/practice). Second, we turn to self-monitoring and self-regulation at the task sequence level (i.e., determining what an appropriate next problem-solving task would be given the current level of understanding/performance). We review research showing that teaching students to regulate their learning process by taking into account not only their performance but also their invested mental effort on a prior task when selecting a new task improves self-regulated learning outcomes (i.e., performance on a knowledge test in the domain of the study). Important directions for future research on the role of mental effort in (improving) self-monitoring and self-regulation at the item and task selection levels are discussed after the respective sections.
