Correlations between Some Anthropometric Parameters, the Lipid Profile and Glycated Hemoglobin in Bulgarian Men with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus

Diabetic patients with associated dyslipidemia are easy targets for cardiovascular diseases (CVD). Glycated hemoglobin predicts the risk for the development of diabetic complications. This study was an attempt to determine lipid abnormalities associated with Type-2 Diabetes Mellitus and association between glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) levels and serum lipid profile to assess the importance of HbA1c as an indicator of dyslipidemia and future risk of cardiovascular disease in Bhola District, Barisal. In this cross-sectional study, 200 known patients of Type-2 Diabetes Mellitus within 35-85 years of age were randomly selected. They were investigated for HbA1c and lipid profile. The data were evaluated by Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) 16.0 version software. Independent samples t-test (2-tailed) was used to compare means of anthropometric, clinical and laboratory parameters and the effect of the glycemic control on their lipid profile was determined using correlation coefficient. Amongst the study group, 65% patients showed poor glycemic control, 35% with good glycemic control and 59.60% patient’s haddyslipidemia.HbA1c was found to have significant positive correlation with total cholesterol (TCHO), low density lipoprotein (LDL-C) and triglycerides (TG) and significant negative correlation with high density lipoprotein (HDL-C). The mean value of TC, LDL-C and TG was found to be lower in patients with good glycemic control than those with poor glycemic control. These differences were significant at the level of P<0.05. These findings conclude that the glycemic control of the patient has got a strong impact on the serum lipid level and dyslipidemia is frequently encountered in those who have got poor glycemic control.Res. Background: Patients with diabetes are considered to be at high risk for dyslipidemia and hypertension and therefore vulnerable to cardiovascular diseases. This study describes the possible role of Glycated Hemoglobin (HbA1c) and serum lipid profile as a biomarker for detecting cardiovascular diseases. The aim of present work is to study the role of HbA1c as a screening biomarker for dyslipidemia in patients with type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM).Methods: Present study consists of 100 Type 2 DM patients between age 30-75 years along with age and sex matched 100 healthy controls. Fasting Blood samples were collected from all participants for measuring lipid profile, blood sugar (FBS) and HbA1c.Results: Present study revealed a significantly increased level of glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) in cases compared to control. HbA1c showed direct and significant correlations with cholesterol, triglycerides and LDL and inverse correlation with HDL in cases when compared to controls.Conclusions: HbA1c can be used as a potential biomarker for the prediction of Dyslipidemia and CVD.

Objective: To observe the relation between waist-hip ratio and lipid profile in type 2 diabetes mellitus patients. Materials and Methods: The present study was carried out at R L Jalappa Hospital attached to Sri DevaRaj Urs Medical College, Tamaka, Kolar, after a written consent from all the participants. The study includes 505 diabetic patients, in which 336 were males and 169 were females. The waist and hip circumference were measured and the ratio was taken as Waist-Hip ratio and about 5 ml of blood sample was collected and used for the estimation of serum cholesterol, triglyceride and HDL-Cholesterol levels by using standard methods. Statistical analysis was done by using independent student t test and Pearson Correlation coefficient was calculated. Results: The waist hip ratio and lipid profiles were not significantly correlated. In type 2 diabetes male patients showed higher triglycerides (177.96±100.19) with waist hip ratio>0.9, whereas female patients showed less Triglycerides (178.19±99.52) with waist hip ratio >0.8. However these differences were statistically not significant. Conclusion: Multiple anthropometric parameters are required to correlate lipid profile rather than single parameter in type 2 diabetes mellitus. Along with anthropometric measurements, lipid profile is also need be monitored in type 2 diabetics. Diabetes mellitus (DM) has been defined as a group of metabolic diseases characterized by hyperglycemia resulting from defects in insulin secretion, insulin action, or both. This study includes (84) subjects, their age ranged from (40 to 54) years. (20) subjects were healthy chosen as control group and (64) patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus were divided into three groups according to their type of anti diabetic therapy: (23) newly diagnosed group without therapy (Group1), (20) with metformin therapy (Group2) and (21) with metformin plus glibenclamide therapies (Group3). In the study lipid profile level were quantitatively determine by enzymatic methods, in addition to that fasting plasma glucose (FPG), Glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c%) and body mass index (BMI) were identified in the patients. There is significant increase in the level of lipid profile in patients group. Metformin alone produce a non-significant favorable effect on all lipids profile parameters while metformin plus glibenclamide showed a significant reduction in TC and LDL-C.
