Curriculum Model for Medical Technology: Lessons from International Benchmarking

Curriculum is a crucial component of any educational process. Curriculum development and instructional management serve as effective tools for meeting the present and future needs of the local and national communities. In trying to strengthen the quality assurance system in Philippine higher education, institutions of higher learning were mandated to upgrade higher education curricular offerings to international standards. Anchored on the PMI framework, data were gathered through indepth review of documents, interviews with program coordinators and on-site observation in selected schools offering Medical Technology program in U.S.A., Australia, Singapore, Japan, Thailand and Canada. The benchmarking results showed that there were major “plus” and “interesting” points that can be used as guide in the innovation of the existing Philippine Medical Technology program and can become the basis of enabling implementation activities: reform and improve curriculum structure, content, teachinglearning strategies and employ competency-based assessment process.   Keywords - curricular reform, international benchmarking, medical technology

The problem of external independent evaluation in English for admission Master`s degree programs in Ukraine is considered in the article. The perspective for further improvement of English teaching and learning standards at Ukrainian universities has been found. The correspondence to the CEFR basic levels and English proficiency has been identified. Conceptual Principles of State Policy on the Development of English in the Field of Higher Education are considered. The study included 1546 participants. The age of students, who studied to gain the first higher education, was between 17 and 20. The students were not familiar with the structure of External Independent Evaluation and they have never passed it. The research was carried out during the period 2018–2019. The relevance of English language competence in the professional context is noted emphasized as a key point of the presented research. The necessity to provide a sufficient competitive level for Ukrainian graduates through improving correspondent English language training has been considered. The study is based on a study of reports by British experts and contemporary scientific publications presented international researchers have focused on the problems of internationalization and perspectives for Ukrainian universities in the English language dimension. The relevance of studying and adaptation of the UK higher education successful practice has been highlighted. The problems and potential ways of improving students` English language proficiency in the given context are identified. In particular, the study contains important recommendations regarding the number of contact hours and the required levels of English proficiency for the main groups of participants in the educational process in higher education according to international standards.

The study investigates teachers' understanding and use of competency-based national curriculum in Kuwait's public education schools. A developed questionnaire survey distributed to 317 teachers and 94 supervisors. Findings indicated weaknesses in professional development and training, the assessment process, use of instructional technology, financial supplies, and teacher guides. Recommendations highlight needs of a professional development and training to supervisors and teachers on implementing the national competency-based curriculum, standards-based assessments, instructional technology, instructional strategies, and financial supplies. A future research on effects of the national competency-based curriculum on student learning, teaching performance, and outcomes of educational process is highly recommended.   Received: 26 May 2021 / Accepted: 2 August 2021 / Published: 5 September 2021

The following paper deals with the independent work of students as an important factor of modern higher education. The author describes specifics and features of students independent work accomplishment in the conditions of electronic training, distant education forms expansion and educational process transfer to the Internet. The essence of students independent work and influence of educational risks of different nature on it is determined. Taking into account the international standards ISO determining the main task of quality assurance as management of risks arising during its achievement, students independent work quality can be provided with pedagogical controls. Search of pedagogical controls quality of students independent work was performed in Tolyatti Academy of Management where they have been applying the open information and education environment for more than 10 years. The research results showed that effective management of students independent work quality in new conditions of its accomplishment requires implementation of three different types of management - mediated pedagogical, self-government and co-managing, as well as different pedagogical means. The received materials can form a basis for quality improvement of students independent work as well as of the higher education in general.

The article is devoted to the study of differences in assessment methods of face-to face and online learning of a foreign language in higher education, in particular, the issue of the effectiveness of the assessment techniques used in different formats. Numerous questions that accompanied foreign language online learning in 2019-2020 and 2020-2021 academic years, as well as contradictory reviews about the assessment methods of students’ knowledge were the prerequisites of the study. The experience demonstrated that online learning differs significantly from face-to-face learning in a number of requirements for teachers and students. The aim of the study is to modify traditional methods of students’ knowledge evaluation and assessment in the form of credits or examinations towards greater independence and objectivity and achieve the autonomy of the assessment process. We carried a survey of students’ opinions on the effectiveness of the forms of assessment adopted at the higher education. Based on the survey results, recommendations are made for improving methods of students’ knowledge assessment system with respect to the educational format. The conclusions made on the basis of data analysis provide a number of changes in the methods of online assessment both in the educational process at higher education and in staff training programs.

The article addresses the problem of evaluating the profession-oriented foreign language competency of cadets of a military educational establishment of higher education on the basis of the competency-based approach. The quality of education given to military specialists is an important task for any military educational organization of higher education and its chairs. To ensure a high level of training, it is necessary to organize the educational process and the competency evaluation in such a way as to create the necessary conditions for the formation of competencies required by the educational program, and also for the development of cadets' personalities. The article considers the evaluation system for the profession-oriented foreign language competency of cadets in the competency-based approach. A general description of the competency evaluation procedure is given. The proposed recommendations for making evaluation rely on the European experience in education and evaluation according to the competency-based approach. The article specifies twelve types of assignments for evaluation, which are divided into four groups, and gives a practical example of their use in the learning outcome monitoring and the midterm attestation for the foreign language discipline in a higher naval school. It is highlighted that using various types and methods of evaluation is important, and the continuous and differentiated character of such evaluation can provide feedback and ensure the implementation of the competency-based approach in foreign language learning.

Introduction.Modernisation of the Russian higher education system, change of conceptual paradigm and transition to competency-based approach to specialist training, which meets the urgent needs of informational technological society, make it necessary to study and develop methodological, content and procedural aspects of the implementation of this approach in practice.Theaimof the research was to study psychological and pedagogical features of the design of a practice-oriented environment, contributing to the formation of personal competency of cadets of educational institutions of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia.Methodology and research methods.The methodological framework of the research was based on comparative analysis, synthesis and generalisation of the content of the Russian and foreign publications, which describe the theory and practice of environmental and competency-based approaches in higher education.Results and scientific novelty.The peculiarities of the implementation of the environmental approach to the training of future specialists were shown. The con tent and conceptual meaning of such categorical-conceptual units concerning “environment” and “educational environment” was defined. The category of practice and its varieties in educational institution was analysed. The specificity of practice-oriented environment of educational organisations of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia was described. The importance of practical orientation of educational environment as a prerequisite for cadets’ education was shown. The criteria of efficiency of the practice-oriented environment were distinguished. The final purposes of education were formulated, including personal competency of future specialists as the main purpose of education. The author emphasises the significance of a complex programme realisation for cadets’ psychological support as an integral component of practice-oriented educational environment of ministerial higher education institutions. The following main blocks of the program were highlighted and characterised: target, deterministic, content, medium, technological, analytically monitored, organisational and procedural. On the basis of the allocated blocks and their substantial description the attention is focused on advantages of implementation of this program promoting continuous personal improvement and realization of potential of participants of educational process.Practical significance.The author is convinced that the implementation of a comprehensive programme of psychological support in educational establishments of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia will contribute to the continuous personal development and realisation of students’ potential and, ultimately, will improve the efficiency of vocational education of graduates.

The Saudi Arabia Vision 2030 plan is, in fact, an endeavor to establish the Kingdom as one of the most advanced and developed countries of the world. An Innovative approach and strategies are the main objectives of the Vision 2030 for the development of the country. Academia is focusing on various methodologies, which will help in elevating the importance of Saudi Higher Education Institution (HEI) to international standards. Social Media Technologies (SMTs) has turned into a developing phenomenon by numerous and diverse classifications in community and educational practice. The term SMTs denotes to web-oriented and mobile based applications that enable peoples and societies to produce, involve, and share new applications or current content, in digital world through multi-path communication. The emergence of Social Media Technologies has enforced mentors to think differently about the way learning occurs. HEI are investigating the use of various domains of Social Media Technologies for pedagogical purposes. These domains comprise blogs for instructions, wikis for shared content creation and podcasting to record teaching materials and making videos. However, HEI of the Kingdom are lagging behind in the incorporation of SMTs in learning and teaching. This research aims to establish contemporary instructions, learning practices, attitudes and scope of SMTs in the HEI pedagogy. A case study has been carried out in Jazan University that involved a mixed method approach to explore the practice of Social Media Technologies in the educational process.

Актуальность исследования определяется необходимостью устранения двух видов противоречий в образовательном процессе высшей школы: 1) между уровнем сформированности коммуникативной компетенции выпускников школ и требованиями, предъявляемыми к студентам-бакалаврам; 2) между необходимостью внедрения компетентностного подхода и отсутствием единых представлений о понятийном аппарате новой парадигмы, методических средствах ее обеспечения применительно к разным компетенциям и компетентностям. Цель исследования – разработка методической модели для формирования коммуникативной компетенции студентов-бакалавров при изучении курса «Речевая культура дефектолога» (на материале стилевой дифференциации языка). В основе разрабатываемой компетентностной методической модели – концепция типологизации материала на всех выделяемых уровнях: формальном, содержательном, прагматическом, организационно-технологическом, оценочном и прогностическом. Раскрывается содержание каждого уровня. Применительно к каждому уровню выделяются ведущие формируемые компоненты коммуникативной компетенции: языковой, дискурсивно-стилистический, риторико-прагматический и этикетно-речевой. В результате делается вывод о значимости разработки компетентностной методической модели в расширении педагогического инструментария компетентностного подхода. Отмечается возможность применения данной модели для повышения уровня коммуникативной компетенции студентов не только в ходе преподавания «Речевой культуры дефектолога», но и других дисциплин лингвистического цикла. Указывается, что разработанная модель может способствовать устранению выделенных противоречий образовательного процесса. В итоге намечаются перспективы дальнейших исследований. The author defines the relevance of the study by the need to eliminate two types of contradictions in the educational process of higher education: 1) between the level of formation of the communicative competence of school graduates and the requirements for bachelor students; 2) between the need to introduce a competency-based approach and the lack of shared sense about the conceptual apparatus of the new paradigm, methodological means of its provision in relation to different competences and competencies. The purpose of this study is to develop a methodological model of the formation of bachelor students’ communicative competence while studying the course “Speech culture of a speech pathologist” (based on the material of style differentiation of the language). The basis of the developed competence-based methodological model is the concept of classification of the material at all distinguished levels: formal, substantive, pragmatic, organizational and technological, evaluative and prognostic. The author reveals the content of each level and identifies the leading formed components of communicative competence for each of them: linguistic, discursive and stylistic, rhetorical and pragmatic, etiquette and speech. As a result, the author concludes about the importance of developing a competence-based methodological model in expanding the pedagogical tools of the competence-based approach. The researcher notes the possibility of using this model to increase the level of communicative competence of students not only in the course of teaching “Speech culture of a speech pathologist”, but in other disciplines of the linguistic cycle. The author points out that the developed model can help eliminate the identified contradictions in educational process. In conclusion, the researcher outlines the prospects for further research.

The developed model of the methodology for the formation of the research competence of biology students combines a combination of a set of target, content, proceduraland evaluatively- effective components and reflects the system-forming connections between them.
