Compressed-development influences increasingly flow from developing to developed countries. Reversing our lens to look at the United States and Japan, we observe that the technological and organizational changes that have spurred compressed development in recent developers are also responsible for changes in industry structure, rising inequality, and employment duality in developed economies. A ‘Red Queen’ effect sees developed countries running faster and undertaking parallel socioeconomic changes to stay in the same privileged place. In some ways ‘we are all compressed developers now’. Looking ahead, and returning to our dyadic pairs, the chapter further considers how the ‘digital economy’ may affect developing–developed country interrelations, and whether we are finally entering an age of ‘great convergence’ with the rise of China and a more multipolar economic and geopolitical structure.

This chapter introduces comparison-shopping as an emerging channel to increase Web visibility for small- and medium-sized enterprises (SME). In Section I, we analyze two business models of comparison-shopping services (CSP): the BargainFinder model and the Pricewatch model. The latter can be further differentiated as Pricewatch-classic model and Pricewatch-innovative model. Through data collected from 60 CSPs, we found Pricewatch-classic model is dominant for the time being, Pricewatch-innovative model is picking up, and the BargainFinder model is only viable in niche market. In Section II, we examined the feasibility of using comparison-shopping to increase Web visibility for SMEs. We demonstrated that comparison-shopping can increase the welfare of consumers, participating in comparison-shopping is a Nash equilibrium dominant strategy for SMEs, and comparison-shopping has the disintermediary effect on underdeveloped economies and polarizing effect on developed economies. Overall, this chapter provides a comprehensive introduction of comparison-shopping and its potential for increasing Web visibility for SMEs.

The article provides a synthetic analysis of the interrelationships between economic development, the primary economic measure of which is the size of Gross Domestic Product, and the volume of transport work measured in tkm and pkm. The study was conducted over a 30-year time series based on the polynomial curves of the most-developed economies (the United States, Japan, China and EU-28) and Russia, the largest area of the world, with large natural resources and significant military industry, and constantly increasing since 2004 GDP. The research shows that GDP in the whole period (1995–2015) in the United States, Japan and the European Union is growing rapidly, significantly ahead of the tkm and pkm transport indicators. In China and Russia, GDP growth has been increasing since 2003, while the dynamic growth of transport (in billion tkm) in 1995–2015 is well ahead of economic growth (GDP). In Poland, trends in the development of the GDP measurement and transport indicators (tkm and pkm) are similar to those of Russia and China.

We aim to understand the dynamics of Bitcoin blockchain trading volumes and, specifically, how different trading groups, in different geographic areas, interact with each other. To achieve this aim, we propose an extended Vector Autoregressive model, aimed at explaining the evolution of trading volumes, both in time and in space. The extension is based on network models, which improve pure autoregressive models, introducing a contemporaneous contagion component that describes contagion effects between trading volumes. Our empirical findings show that transactions activities in bitcoins is dominated by groups of network participants in Europe and in the United States, consistent with the expectation that market interactions primarily take place in developed economies.

Copyright industries represent an important part of the developed economies. The effective protection of copyright fulfills an important role in the advancement of innovation and economic development. However, in the digital economy, the protection of copyrighted works poses numerous and very difficult challenges. The protected works usually targeted by criminals are computer programs, motion pictures, video games, and musical compositions. The estimated or actual harm to copyright owners can amount to billions of dollars. Moreover, these offenses are sometimes perpetrated in connection with other crimes, such as conspiracy to commit racketeering or money laundering. This paper argues that criminal enforcement of copyright can be an important safeguard of economic and information security interests. The paper discusses essential aspects regarding the criminal protection of copyright in the United States. Based on a theoretically-informed, yet empirically-driven approach, which takes into account a large corpus of data, consisting mostly of cases brought to courts of law, the paper discusses the main aspects of the phenomenon. Finally, the paper proposes a number of measures that would improve the protection copyrighted works. Keywords: Copyright, Economic Development, Cybercrime, Infringement, Security, Loss

It has long been apparent that gross disparities exist in health care in the United States, and, indeed, other nations with fully developed economies. All kinds of markers point to these inequities, with measures such as overall life expectancy, hospitalization rates, premature mortality, adverse outcomes associated with medical and surgical treatment, infant mortality, and the impact of many significant disease types higher and more impactful among minority groups and those of the most modest economic means. This is not new. Are there pointers to what might underpin the disparities in outcomes among the different minority groups?

This chapter surveys some of the main strands in the recent US literature on the economics of divorce. We discuss changes over time in the divorce rate, the widening gap in marital instability by socioeconomic status, and the increase in “gray divorce.” We review the role of age at entry into first marriage and how it differs by race/ethnicity. Compared to other developed economies, the divorce rate in the United States is exceptionally high. We offer possible explanations including the roles of theologically conservative religions and the high levels of both income inequality and teen fertility in the United States We review the effects of divorce reforms and the role of barriers to economic self-sufficiency. Finally, we discuss the effects of divorce on children’s well-being and the role of child support policies.

With economic development in countries like India comes an increasing appetite to eat out, and, as a consequence, more prevalent obesity. Eating out does not have to bring joy at the cost of wellbeing. Prosperity in India does not have to lead to obesity, as it has in the United States with 62% of its people being diagnosed as clinically obese. Suggesting a balance between hedonism and personal care, in this chapter, the authors identify what motivates people, restaurant patrons in particular, to find this balance. Using research on decision-making in behavioral economics, theories of motivation and perspectives in positive psychology, they identify alternative ways for consumers to achieve this balance—and for service providers to enable them to do so. Based on the idea that good business, ethical and caring business, enables stable and growing markets, the authors advocate that restaurant managers market their businesses as providing not just treats but good treats! The recommendation, they explain, is even more pertinent for emerging economies than it is for developed economies.

Entrepreneurship has been claimed to matter and deserve priority because it has been linked to some of the most compelling economic and social issues of our time. This paper suggests that entrepreneurship is also inextricably linked to a fundamental value common among the western developed economies, democracy. Three distinct contexts are examined to link democracy to entrepreneurship, two historical and one contemporary. The first is National Socialism in Germany, which emerged by suppressing both entrepreneurship and democracy. The second is the rise of the Trusts, or dominant large corporations and concomitant decline of small business in the United States at the end of the nineteenth century. Finally, both measurement and perception suggest a decline in democracy as well as entrepreneurship in the contemporary era. These concerns are only exacerbated in the current Covid-19 crisis. The paper concludes that an important policy mandate for entrepreneurship may be to ensure the independent, decentralized and autonomous decision-making serving as a cornerstone of democracy.

A következő évtizedekben a világ népességének várható életkilátásai fokozatosan javulnak. The life expectancy of the world population is continuously improving. For example, according to demographic forecasts, in the United States, the population having reached the age of 60 can expect at least 90 years of life. The drastic changes in the demographic data prognosticate dramatic changes, new demands and approaches concerning the so-called post-career life. In this paper, in addition to introducing the perspectives of a longer life, we primarily focus on the managers and leaders employed in developed economies and organizations, supposing that their retirement will surely have a considerable impact on the life and the technological, financial and economic successes of their organizations. A number of the employees are probably in possession of a financial background allowing them to make a reasonable decision serving their interests on the time and aspects of retirement and the activities don in the subsequent period.
