In recent decades women have had substantial advances in access to higher education and the labor market, but these achievements were not reflected in the high ranking of companies. The participation of women in executive positions in the advisory board of large corporations in Brazil and in the world is still incipient. In this sense factors such as patriarchy, male chauvinism, sexism, among other advances not allow the presence of women at the top of large companies, even when this presence is associated with better performance. Thus, work on the assumption that thinking gender diversity of public policies involves ethical issues and inclusion strategies going performance improvement field and value creation, while the completion of ideas and attitudes from the specificities of each gender can contribute to economic and social development of the company. Thus the aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between corporate value and the presence of women in high-ranking. Therefore, we collected data of companies listed on the B3 and identified those with the presence of women on the board and the executive board, checking the differences between them from non-parametric tests. It is still employed multivariate data analysis from the linear regression and probit regression. The results suggest a positive and statistically significant relationship between firm value and the presence of women on the board. The results show evidence that the inclusion of women on the board in addition to ensuring diversity, meet precepts of ethics, equality, social responsibility, contributing to the better performance of firms and generating shareholder value.

This article aims at identifying the relationship between corporate governance (CG) and corporate social responsibility expenditure (CSRE) for the Bangladeshi banking sector. CG has been considered as the single independent variable divided into three components: board size (BS), gender diversity (GD) and board members’ interrelationship (BMI), and CSRE has been considered as the dependent variable. Further, a single moderator—firm value (FV) as been employed in order to test the moderating influence. Annual reports from 2015 to 2019 (5 years) of 35 banking firms have been used as samples. The study utilized Pearson’s correlation coefficient in order to test the direct relationships and regression analysis to test the moderating effects. The analysis has revealed that BS and GD are positively associated with CSRE while BMI has a negative association with CSRE. Furthermore, has been revealed that FV can moderate all the direct relationships. The study is expected to aid researchers in further empirical investigation over this important issue and guide policymakers to obtain more representative outcomes to make constructive decisions regarding CG and CSRE that would, in turn, increase FV.

While access to higher education continues to expand, the participation of women and ethnic minority scholars in the academic profession remains low. This paper theorizes the relationship between identity- based epistemic judgments and the reproduction of social inequalities in the academia. It conceptualizes these judgments as acts of epistemic positioning, which entail the evaluation of knowledge claims based on the speaker’s stated or inferred identity. These judgments serve to limit the scope of the knowledge claim, making it more likely speakers will be denied recognition or credit. The paper introduces four kinds of epistemic positioning: bounding, domaining, non-attribution, and appropriation. Given the growing importance of visibility and recognition in the context of increasing competition and insecurity in academic employment, these practices play a role in the ability of underrepresented groups to remain in the academia. The paper discusses the implications of these findings for conceptualizing and addressing the relationship between social inequalities and recognition, to build towards an intersectional political economy of knowledge production.

The study aims to investigate the relationship between the gender diversity of board director, the accounting conservatism and firm value in Iraqi firms. The sample was represented by 30 Iraqi firms listed on the Iraqi market over the period 2017. The research was based on the main hypothesis that gender diversity has a positive relationship with conservatism and firm value, that conservatism as an intermediate variable will enhance the positive relationship between gender diversity and firm value. The study reached results that support the research hypotheses. The appointment of females to the board helps improve the provision of conservative accounting information and avoids overstate when reporting earnings. Based on these results, Therefore, we recommend the Iraqi companies appoint between 15 to 30% of females on the board.

The aim of this paper is to provide a preliminary analysis of the relationship between firm market value and the size and gender diversity of a board of directors for a sample of publicly listed Australian firms. Our results show that smaller boards appear to be more effective in representing the shareholders as smaller boards are associated with higher firm value. As board size increases firm value declines, however at a decreasing rate suggesting that the relationship between board size and firm value is not strictly linear. Our findings further indicate that gender diversity promotes shareholders’ value as the presence of women directors is associated with higher firm value

Radiomics is a science that investigates a large number of features from medical images using data-characterisation algorithms, with the aim to analyse disease characteristics that are indistinguishable to the naked eye. Radiogenomics attempts to establish and examine the relationship between tumour genomic characteristics and their radiologic appearance. Although there is certainly a lot to learn from these relationships, one could ask the question: what is the practical significance of radiogenomic discoveries? This increasing interest in such applications inevitably raises numerous legal and ethical questions. In an environment such as the technology field, which changes quickly and unpredictably, regulations need to be timely in order to be relevant.  In this paper, issues that must be solved to make the future applications of this innovative technology safe and useful are analysed.

AbstractData platforms represent a new paradigm for carrying out health research. In the platform model, datasets are pooled for remote access and analysis, so novel insights for developing better stratified and/or personalised medicine approaches can be derived from their integration. If the integration of diverse datasets enables development of more accurate risk indicators, prognostic factors, or better treatments and interventions, this obviates the need for the sharing and reuse of data; and a platform-based approach is an appropriate model for facilitating this. Platform-based approaches thus require new thinking about consent. Here we defend an approach to meeting this challenge within the data platform model, grounded in: the notion of ‘reasonable expectations’ for the reuse of data; Waldron’s account of ‘integrity’ as a heuristic for managing disagreement about the ethical permissibility of the approach; and the element of the social contract that emphasises the importance of public engagement in embedding new norms of research consistent with changing technological realities. While a social contract approach may sound appealing, however, it is incoherent in the context at hand. We defend a way forward guided by that part of the social contract which requires public approval for the proposal and argue that we have moral reasons to endorse a wider presumption of data reuse. However, we show that the relationship in question is not recognisably contractual and that the social contract approach is therefore misleading in this context. We conclude stating four requirements on which the legitimacy of our proposal rests.

Abstract We test the effect of institutional quality on capital structure in the microfinance setting. In doing this, we rely on data from 532 microfinance institutions (MFIs) located in 73 countries dotted across the six microfinance regions in the world. We observe that institutional quality exhibits a robust negative and statistically significant relationship with capital structure in both the short and long run, implying that MFIs in countries with a better institutional environment are less likely to utilize more debt. Our moderation analysis furnishes us with evidence that the presence of women on the board of an MFI significantly moderates the relationship between institutional quality and its capital structure. We show that in the presence of more female representation on the boards of MFIs, the tendency of MFIs using less debt is higher.

This article explores some questions arising from recent debates on patriarchy and capitalism. The focus is on the role of women in communist-led peasant movements in India and the implications of such struggles on the project of women’s emancipation. The first section lays out a framework for discussing the interface between class consciousness and the anti-patriarchal project, whereby patriarchy is located within the structural contradictions arising out of the contestations within the process of accumulation. The second section documents the historical context, focusing on the relationship between land reforms and social transformation in semi-feudal and early capitalist contexts, and analyzes the extent to which communist-led struggles are anti-patriarchal in character. The third section turns to the participation of women in the contemporary struggles of both agricultural workers and peasant movements and underlines the new emerging dialectics between women’s and peasant organizations under a neoliberal state and with deepening agrarian distress.
