The aim of our study was to evaluate the relationship between neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and adenoma size in parathyroidectomized patients who underwent a parathyroidectomy. The neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio has recently become popular as a biomarker for malignant diseases or for estimating tumor size preoperatively. This study aimed to estimate the relationship between adenoma size and NLR. Furthermore, we assessed whether a higher level of NLR is correlated with the presence of parathyroid carcinoma. A retrospective chart review was performed for patients with parathyroid adenoma who underwent parathyroidectomy between January 2012 and August 2014. Data related to age, sex, NLR, parathyroid hormone level (PTH), preoperative calcium, phosphorus, adenoma size, and pathology reports were collected. The neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio was significantly correlated with calcium levels, PTH levels, parathyroid adenoma size, and the presence of cancer. However, there was no correlation between NLR and age, sex, and phosphorus levels. This study is the first to document a positive correlation between NLR and parathyroid adenoma size, as well as the presence of cancer, in patients who underwent surgery as a result of primary hyperparathyroidism.

We aimed to investigate the relationship between neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and the postoperative length of hospital stay. In addition, the impact of radiologic and histopathologic findings on hospital stay was also evaluated. This was a retrospective study; 103 patients with appendicitis were included. Diagnosis was confirmed with computerized tomography (CT) scans, ultrasonography, and histopathologic examination. Correlations between the length of hospital stay and age; sex; NLR; c-reactive peptide (CRP) levels; appendix diameter on CT scan or ultrasonography; appendix localization; and pathology reports were evaluated. The length of hospital stay was not related to age or sex. The length of hospital stay after appendectomy was correlated with appendix diameter on CT scan and phlegmonous appendicitis, but it was not associated with NLR, CRP levels, or appendix diameter on ultrasonography. This is a pioneer study, given there is no comprehensive study to date evaluating the association between NLR levels and the length of hospital stay of patients with acute appendicitis. NLR is not associated with the length of hospital stay. Appendix diameter with CT scan and appendix pathology reports are correlated with the length of postoperative hospital stay in appendectomy patients.

Background: The indications for endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) for gastric cancer are based on preoperative histological assessment; however, examination of tissue biopsy is not always reliable as only a limited portion of the lesion can be obtained. The neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) are markers of inflammatory response and are potentially associated with the grade of malignancy in gastric cancer. We aimed to investigate the association between NLR and PLR and the histology of gastric cancer. Methods: This study included 218 patients who underwent ESD for gastric cancer. The relationship between NLR/PLR and histological diagnosis was investigated. Results: Patients with adenocarcinomas showed significantly higher NLR and PLR than those with adenomas (p < 0.001 and p < 0.05, respectively). Further, patients with undifferentiated adenocarcinoma showed a significantly higher NLR (p < 0.05) than those with differentiated adenocarcinoma. Conclusion: This study suggests that NLR could be a useful marker for assessing early gastric cancer.

Patients with classic biliary colic symptoms and documented gallbladder ejection fractions on the higher end of the spectrum on hepatobiliary iminoacetic acid scans with cholecystokinin stimulation are presently understudied and the benefits of cholecystectomy are unclear. To determine whether patients with biliary-type pain and biliary hyperkinesia (defined as a gallbladder ejection fractions of 80% or greater) benefit from laparoscopic cholecystectomy, a retrospective chart review encompassing five community hospitals was performed. Patients 16 years and older with diagnosed biliary hyperkinesia who underwent laparoscopic cholecystectomy between January 1, 2010 and May 31, 2015 were included. Pathology reports were reviewed for histologic changes indicating cholecystitis. Resolution of biliary colic symptoms was reviewed one to three weeks after surgery in their postoperative follow-up documentation. Within our study cohort, we found 97 patients who underwent laparoscopic cholecystectomy for biliary hyperkinesia. Within this population, 84.5 per cent of patients undergoing laparoscopic cholecystectomy for biliary hyper-kinesia had positive findings for gallbladder disease on final pathology. Of the 77 patients with data available from their first postoperative visit, 70 (90.9%) reported improvement or resolution of symptoms. Our findings suggest that symptomatic biliary hyperkinesia may be treated successfully with surgery.

Objective: Various studies have reported that the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio in the serum (sNLR) may serve as a cost-effective and useful prognostic factor in patients with various cancer types. We investigated the clinical impact of NLR as a prognostic factor in malign pleural effusion (MPE) and sNLR on prognosis in MPE. Method: We retrospectively reviewed all of the patients who were diagnosed MPE. The relationship between sNLR and neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio in the malign pleural effusion (mNLR) value, age, Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG), histopathologic type, serum albumin and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) with survival were investigated. Results: A total of 222 patients with a mean age of 65.7±11.5 were included in the study. Patients with a mNLR value ≥0.42 and a serum NLR value ≥4.75 had a shorter survival (p: 0.000). Multivariate analysis, which showed that survival was significantly related mNLR value > 0.42 and/or sNLR value > 4.75 (Odds Ratio (OR): 2.66, %95 CI, 1,65-4,3 p: 0.001), serum LDH > 210 (OR = 1.8, %95 CI, 1,33-2,46 p: 0.001) and age > 65 (OR = 1.9, %95 CI, 1,41-2,55 p = 0.001). Conclusion: sNLR and mNLR may act as a simple, useful, and cost-effective prognostic factor in patients with MPE. Furthermore, these results may serve as the cornerstone of further research into the mNLR in the future. Although further studies are required to generalize our results, this information will benefit clinicians and patients in determining the most appropriate therapy for patients with MPE.

Aim: To describe the associated ocular, neurologic, and systemic findings in a population of children with optic nerve hypoplasia (ONH) and to evaluate the relationship between ocular signs and neurologic findings. Method: A retrospective chart review of 53 patients with the diagnosis of ONH seen between December 1998 and September 2012 was performed. All neurodevelopmental anomalies, neuroradiologic findings, endocrinologic and systemic findings were recorded. Poor vision was defined as the visual acuity poorer than logMAR 1.0 or inadequate central steady maintained fixation. Results: Thirty (56.6%) of the 53 children with ONH were boys. Mean age at presentation was 56.2±46.8 months (range; 3 months to 18 years). Poor vision defined for the purpose of this study was found in 47.2% of 53 patients. Thirty-three (62.3%) children had nystagmus. Thirty-four (64.2%) children had strabismus. Thirteen (38.2%) of those with strabismus had esotropia, 20 (58.8%) had exotropia. The total number of the children with neurodevelopmental deficit was 22 (41.5%) in our study. Conclusion: The vision of young children with ONH should be monitored at least annually, and any refractive errors should be treated. Neuroimaging of the brain and endocrinologic evaluation is necessary in all cases with ONH.

Aim: To explore the relationship between the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and renal damage in patients with H-type hypertension. Materials & methods: A total of 618 patients between 2017 and 2019 were analyzed retrospectively. Results: NLR was significantly correlated with renal damage in hypertension patients. Appropriate cut-off value for NLR (2.247) was determined by receiver operating characteristic curve; linear regression analysis showed that NLR and estimated glomerular filtration rate, blood urea nitrogen/creatinine has a significant negative correlation in H-type hypertension group (p < 0.05); logistic regression analysis showed that the risk of renal damage increased by 10% for each 1 umol/l increase of homocysteine, and 51% for each 1.0 increase of NLR in H-type hypertension patients. Conclusion: NLR worth popularizing in prediction of renal damage in patients with H-type hypertension.

Neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) has been proposed as a bone loss index in postmenopausal women and as a marker of inflammation in coeliac patients. The aims of this work were to evaluate the effect of gluten-free diet (GFD) on NLR retrospectively and study the relationship between NLR and Mediterranean diet adherence and selected food groups (fruits, vegetables, red meat, potatoes, and unrefined and refined cereals). Adult individuals (n=50), who had been on a strict GFD by at least 6 months, were recruited. The degree of adherence to the Mediterranean diet was calculated with two different scores: the Mediterranean Diet Score (MDS-14), assessed through the validated 14-item questionnaire of the PREDIMED study, and the MEDScore (Score-55) proposed by Panagiotakos. The latter includes the consumption of unrefined cereals (UC). High percentages of osteopenia and osteoporosis were found within the recruited subjects, who furnished the reports of bone mineral density (BMD), in particular in postmenopausal (Post-M) women. Recent NLR was higher in subjects with osteoporosis compared to osteopenia and normal BMD. However, retrospective analysis showed both increase and decrease in NLR after GFD, with no significant differences between Marsh grade, anemia, and BMD status. Moreover, premenopausal previous pregnancy (Pre-MPP) and Post-M had higher NLR at diagnosis compared to Men and premenopausal (Pre-M), but higher differences were observed in recent NLR between Pre-MPP and Men only. Chocolate consumption was associated with lower recent NLR, whereas the latter was correlated with Score-55, but not with MDS-14. Moreover, refined cereal consumption was correlated with recent NLR. Although large prospective studies are needed in order to clarify the relationship between UC and NLR in coeliac patients, in this pilot study, we have investigated for the first time the relationship between NLR, dietary habit, and osteoporosis in coeliac disease.
