Abstract We evaluate the welfare cost of housing transaction taxes with a new assignment model based framework, where welfare effects are driven by distortions in the matching of houses and households. We calibrate the model with data from the Helsinki metropolitan region to assess the impact of a reform where an ad valorem transaction tax is replaced with a revenue equivalent property tax. The aggregate welfare gain from this reform increases rapidly with the initial transaction tax rate, with the Laffer curve peaking at about 10%. The proportion of households that lose out from the reform is nevertheless increasing in the tax rate. We compare our model-based counterfactual aggregate welfare results with welfare calculations based on reduced-form estimates from previous policy evaluation studies; they are broadly in line, despite the latter using data from different housing markets at various levels and changes of the tax rate.

Testing the intended effect for the taxpayer, knowledge of tax regulations, and tax counseling with transaction tax payment compliance for e-commerce actors is the purpose of this research. The research population involves E-commerce actors in the fashion sector who operate on Instagram social media accounts and are located in Surabaya. Multiple Linear Regression is the provision chosen in the data analysis model of this study because this study was designed to examine the influence of the independent variable with the dependent variable. The study results indicate that the growing awareness of taxpayers has a negative and insignificant effect on compliance with paying taxes for e-commerce actors. Knowledge of tax regulations partially found a significant positive effect on tax compliance for e-commerce actors. Then, other results show that partial tax counseling has a positive effect that is not considered significant on tax compliance for e-commerce players.

Banking has driven the development of the world for centuries. An interesting issue to analyze is the optimal spread on financial products reflecting the value added that does not generate economic distortions for consumers in intertemporal decisions. Based on a gravity equation for these services, this paper examines the optimality of a modified Quoted Spread, the recently-proposed mobile-ratio, by assessing whether the pure interest expressed as a gravity equation between interests does not change after applying this spread. Results show that the mobile-ratio is the specification of the spread with no distortions on investment decisions. Regarding fiscal policy, this ratio plays a key role for both the Financial Transaction Tax and the VAT on financial services.

Purpose This study aims to report on experimental asset markets designed to examine the impact of a levy on trade, as well as the taxation authority’s ability to raise tax revenue when markets are subject to mispricing. Some have suggested that a transaction tax will discourage irrational speculation and lead to more efficient markets, but others argue that a higher cost of trading will prove to be an impediment to trade with no useful outcomes. Design/methodology/approach The authors’ goal is to provide insight on the impact of a transaction tax in a very specific asset market. The authors chose this design because the robustness of the bubble and crash pattern points to an environment that is particularly appropriate for the study of the effectiveness of a transaction tax in promoting efficient pricing. Furthermore, in a laboratory, the authors can control for extraneous factors that are problematic in the study of naturally occurring environments. Findings The authors examine whether a securities transaction tax promotes efficiency in markets that are prone to mispricing and find little evidence that a tax on trade will reduce speculation. Research limitations/implications This study’s experimental environment is, of course, an abstraction of naturally occurring markets and it may be that the model excludes important aspects. Social implications The authors find that a tax on financial transactions allows the taxation authority to raise significant revenue with little impact on pricing or trading volume. Originality/value To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this study is the first systematic examination of a transaction tax on outcomes in a market that is prone to mispricing.

The Eurozone crisis exposed the incompleteness of the Economic and Monetary Union’s governance framework thereby prompting the promotion of a multitude of reform packages and proposals. This simultaneously induced conflict among EU governments on both design and content of such reforms. In case of the financial transaction tax (FTT) proposal, which failed to garner consensus among member governments, it illustrates Ireland’s disapproval clashing with favorable German and French stances. While these governments aligned on the necessity to reform, the process of harmonizing EU financial governance proved rather difficult. In analyzing governments’ variation of reform support or opposition, the societal approach to governmental preference formation is employed. This is considerably conducive in directing academic attention to the role of two explanatory variables, domestic material interests and value-based ideas, in shaping governments’ reform positions. This article encompasses a comprehensive comparative account of domestic preference formation and responsiveness of three EU governments (France, Germany and Ireland), in the case study of the FTT, and demonstrates that the two societal dynamics are prone to have played a role in shaping financial reform controversies. By building on and contributing to Eurozone crisis literature, this approach seems appropriate in analyzing financial governance reform due to the crisis’ domestic impact resulting in increased public salience, issue politicization and an advanced role of elected politicians.

This study aims to examine the time-varying correlations and volatility linkages between commodity and equity markets before and after the implementation of the commodity transaction tax (CTT) in India in 2013. The study utilizes symmetric and asymmetric DCC-EGARCH model to estimate correlation dynamics. Evidence suggests that the volatility and dynamic correlation linkages between commodities and equity markets are significantly affected by the triggering events. The time-varying correlations of Comdex-Nifty 50 show an unintended steep decline in the post-CTT period. It is an indication of a “flight to quality” phenomenon, where investors move capital from non-agricultural commodity futures to other cross markets and international markets. However, DCC of Comdex-Dhaanya pair is highly volatile in the post-CTT period and also noticed an increased correlation and volatility between the Dhaanya-Nifty 50 pair. Moreover, the correlation dynamics reveal a certain degree of interdependence between the cross markets, which are lower especially during the triggering episodes.

The advent of exchange traded funds (ETFs) has rendered index trading much affordable compared to their futures counterparts. The present study attempts to examine the impact of ETF listing on the price of the constituent securities of the index that it aims to track. The sample comprises of all the equity ETFs listed in India from 1 January 2002 to 31 March 2019. Event study analysis has been used to examine whether listing of ETFs bore any price impact on the constituent stocks of ETFs. To account for robustness, both parametric and non-parametric tests have been employed. The estimates obtained from event study analysis revealed that the constituent stocks generated insignificant returns for the period extending from January 2002 to March 2009 and April 2009 to March 2013 but positive and significant cumulative average abnormal returns (CAARs) post ETF listing for the period ranging from April 2013 to March 2019, thus providing evidence in support of positive price impact. The permission granted to pension funds, insurers and Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) to invest their funds in ETFs as well as reduction in Securities Transaction Tax (STT) account for the observed price differential. An analysis of the factors accounting for the variation in valuation effects ascertained that the stocks that were traded thinly prior to ETF listing and those forming part of ETFs with larger asset base experienced positive price impact following ETF listing.
The objective of this research was to examine the effect of tunneling incentive, bonus mechanism and debt covenant to transfer pricing. This research also conducted to test the role of tax minimization in moderating the relation between those variables. Research sample was manufacturing companies in consumer goods sector, that registered in Indonesia Stock Exchange 2014-2018. This research use purposive sampling method, with 110 observation data. Analysis method used is multiple linear regression. The result show only Debt covenant that proved can increase firm in transfer pricing. This research was not able to prove tunneling incentive and bonus mechanism influenced the decision of transfer pricing transaction. Tax minimization is not proved moderating the relations between tunneling incentive, bonus mechanism, and debt covenant to transfer pricing transactions.
