In this paper, the influence of the modification method applied to ground vulcanizate (GV) on the properties of elastomeric compositions based on nitrile rubber is discussed. Modified GV has been mixed with the elastomeric composition, which is used for the manufacturing of oil-petroleum-resistant rubber products. The work takes into consideration two types of GV with different chemical nature. The first GV type is rubber crumb produced from end-of-life tires. The second GV type was obtained from rubber wastes based on nitrile rubber. Three methods of the modification are compared in the research: mechanical activation in a planetary ball mill, swelling in a Polyethylene glycol (PEG-400) medium, and the mechano-chemical transformation of GV with PEG-4000. It is shown that depending on the dosage addition of GV modified with PEG-4000 reduce the compression set up for (16.1±0.7%), the strength decreases only by 2.1–8.3%, and the elongation at break increases by 0.8–10.3% compared to rubber without additives.

Traditional sound-absorbing materials have a number of disadvantages: low water resistance, low compressive and tensile strengths, low weather resistance, etc. Therefore, new sound-absorbing materials need to be developed with improved properties including the involvement of industrial byproducts. The influence of the grain-size composition of the rubber crumb from used car tires on the sound insulation of cement and gypsum composites was studied in the paper. The results of the study contribute to the creation of a structural material for the manufacture of sound-absorbing as well as load-bearing structures. The field of application of the developed materials is very extensive.

The strength comparison of fibre reinforced peat and clayey-silt for the compacted sub-grade by using the fibre reinforcement technique from the scrap tire is presented. The scrap tires are extracted and shredded into a standard size, i.e., rubber-chip, rubber-crumb, rubber-powder and fibre-polyester for the consistency and homogeneity of the design mix. In this study, two types of fibres are used, which are fibre polyester and rubber crumb. The fibres at various designated percentage are mixed with the clayey-silt and peat with the addition of a minimum 5% cement content as a binder to achieve the targeted strength. The specimens were prepared by compacting at the optimum moisture content and maximum dry density. The compacted treated specimens were prepared and air cured for 7 and 28 days in room temperature (23C to 26C). In evaluating the strength and durability effect of fibres between the untreated (no fibres) and treated specimens (with fibres and cement), the Unconfined Compression Strength (UCS) and California Bearing Ratio (CBR) tests are executed. The findings indicate that the shear strength increases with the curing period. The addition of fibre-polyester and shredded rubber-crumb exhibits an increment in the contact area and bonding between the fibre reinforced materials and soil particles, which then significantly improved the compressive strength of the design mix.

Solid waste management is one the leading problems in Malaysia. Rapid development and population growth have prompted researches to improve the recycling and reusing of waste material for sustainable development. Chicken eggshell is discarded in Malaysia as municipal waste, while waste tyre is a waste that is difficult to handle and often ends up in the landfill. This paper presents the properties of high performance concrete with eggshell powder and tyre rubber crumb as partial replacement of cement and sand. Grade 45 concrete was prepared with 5% tyre rubber crumb as sand replacement and up to 15% of eggshell powder as cement replacement. The mechanical strength of concrete was investigated for up to 90 days while durability properties were studied through water absorption and carbonation test. Results show that concrete with 5% eggshell powder is optimal for high mechanical properties, lower water absorption and low carbonation depth. X-Ray Diffraction of concrete shows increase of calcite compound which contributes to the gain of strength. Microstructure analysis with SEM and EDX provides insight of the improved performance, which is attributed to a denser C-H-S gels and finer pore structure.
