SunPower Corporation is an American organization working in the solar energy sector specialized in power generation and solar energy storage. This case highlights the strategic growth path of SunPower corporation, which originated as an outcome of effective solar cells production. This case also discussed how the energy sector considers solar energy the vital energy source, and solar energy organizations grow to capture the energy demand. The case also highlights the various consolidations of SunPower in terms of different mergers and acquisitions as essential strategies to succeed. The case also discusses the competitors’ strategy of the top five solar power generation and storage firms, which give a clear view of how different solar firms are building their space in the solar energy sector. With competitors’ discussion, this helps to understand the challenge faced by SunPower to beat the competition among the other solar firms. In the end, the case focused on the ongoing and future strategic choices of SunPower as SunPower Corporation.

This chapter discusses the key characteristics and core challenges of the South African economy in the post-apartheid era. South Africa shares some commonalities with other African and middle-income economies, yet has a unique history and some distinctive economic features. South Africa’s economic complexities and challenges are discussed here with reference to six comparator countries. We examine South Africa’s growth path, considering the low rates of economic growth as well as the lack of structural transformation and the unsustainable and non-inclusive nature of this growth. The ‘triple challenges’ of poverty, inequality, and employment are both a manifestation of the nature of this growth path and a constraint on overall growth. This is also briefly evaluated in the context of the political economy and policy context of growth and development in South Africa. The chapter reviews South African economic data, with a focus on microeconomic survey data.

Although campsites are an important segment of the tourist sector, few applied articles have analyzed their growth path and tested Gibrat’s Law for firms within this industry. This knowledge can be of importance to the authorities when analyzing the regional impacts of growth in this sector. With government statistics from the last decade, we use a GMM framework to test the stricter version of Gibrat’s Law, which consist of three parts: the campsites’ growth trend, how they carry over success and failure, and how volatile their size is. The first and third part are rejected for Norwegian campsites, leading to a rejection of Gibrat’s Law. To see if firms of different sizes follow different dynamics, we split the sample in three parts. Here, we find evidence of a threshold size, as large campsites follow a fundamentally different dynamic than small and medium campsites. Specifically, large campsites gain no stability in revenue by further increases in size, whereas they carry over success/failure across years. The opposite is true for the rest of the sector. Gibrat’s Law is rejected on at least one count for each of the sub-samples. Lastly, we supplement the analysis with economy-wide and firm-specific variables to test further hypotheses.

We examine the motivations behind the electrical energy conservation and smart management at households to verify whether we are observing an ecological breakthrough, or a mere continuation of the well-trodden consumption-growth path. We conducted an online survey in France, Spain, Italy, and Denmark (n = 3200) on the subject of electricity use and generation. We utilized a generalized structural equation model to simultaneously test the direct reasons behind different energy-use behaviors and intentions, as well as their motivating factors. Measures to conserve electrical energy and install renewable energy equipment are not solely driven by ecological concerns; a crucial role is played by openness to new technologies, which correlates with high financial status. Saving electrical energy and new-tech eagerness go hand-in-hand with attachment to consumption and comfort. Social environment is relevant, as it allows users to converse about electricity saving with friends, and to observe their habits. Individuals may aim not to consume less energy, but to enhance their standards of living by economizing energy to fund other purchases, which limits the reduction in carbon footprint. Increasing the popularity of energy-saving solutions, therefore, might prove insufficient in the face of environmental threats and the challenges of transforming the energy market.

Better accuracy in short-term forecasting is required for intermediate planning for the national target to reduce CO2 emissions. High stake climate change conventions need accurate predictions of the future emission growth path of the participating countries to make informed decisions. The current study forecasts the CO2 emissions of the 17 key emitting countries. Unlike previous studies where linear statistical modeling is used to forecast the emissions, we develop a multilayer artificial neural network model to forecast the emissions. This model is a dynamic nonlinear model that helps to obtain optimal weights for the predictors with a high level of prediction accuracy. The model uses the gross domestic product (GDP), urban population ratio, and trade openness, as predictors for CO2 emissions. We observe an average of 96% prediction accuracy among the 17 countries which is much higher than the accuracy of the previous models. Using the optimal weights and available input data the forecasting of CO2 emissions is undertaken. The results show that high emitting countries, such as China, India, Iran, Indonesia, and Saudi Arabia are expected to increase their emissions in the near future. Currently, low emitting countries, such as Brazil, South Africa, Turkey, and South Korea will also tread on a high emission growth path. On the other hand, the USA, Japan, UK, France, Italy, Australia, and Canada will continuously reduce their emissions. These findings will help the countries to engage in climate mitigation and adaptation negotiations.

Technology is the mast that keeps the flag of the entertainment industry flying high. As technology evolves and the mode and quality of entertainment changes vigorously, India represents one of the Top 5 Entertainment and Media markets across the world. The growing usage of 3G, 4G and portable devices, rising advertising revenues, growing consumer demand has resulted in the growth of the Indian media and entertainment industry at a CAGR of 10.9 percent from FY 17-18. Constant support from TRAI (Telecom Regulatory authority of India) and the Govt. of India has pushed the Indian Media and Entertainment(M&E) Industry on a progressive growth path. This manuscript traces the evolution of the M&E landscape and discusses specific cases from the M&E industry where social media has been instrumental in hugely impacting the consumption of the M&E content.

Abstract The Laboratory of Economic and Social Geography of the V B Sochava Institute of Geography SB RAS (Irkutsk, Russia) has been carrying out socio-economic research in the indicated field over the past decade. We consider the Siberian macroregion traditionally within the space of Western and Eastern Siberia with the inclusion of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia). The research results reflect, firstly, the growth path of Siberia in the new millennium, taking into account the multidirectional external and internal factors. Secondly, our findings include the identified spatial patterns of the main socio-geographical structures (specialization of existing industries, infrastructure, market and non-market services and the population) as the basis of regional policy with the aim of sustainable development, ensuring the modern level of quality of life of Siberians. We studied the key Baikal region in more detail.

This paper constructs a partial equilibrium model under public health emergency shocks based on economic growth theory, and investigates the relationship between government intervention and virus transmission and economic growth path. We found that both close contacts tracing measures and isolation measures are beneficial to human capital stock and economic output per capita, and the effect of close contact tracing measures is better than that of isolation measures. For infectious diseases of different intensities, economic growth pathways differed across interventions. For low contagious public health emergencies, the focus should be on the coordination of isolation and tracing measures. For highly contagious public health emergencies, strict isolation, and tracing measures have limited effect in repairing the negative economic impact of the outbreak. The theoretical model provides a basic paradigm for the future researches to study economic growth under health emergencies, with good scalability and robustness.
