Biological processes are extensively used for wastewater treatment because of low organic footprint, economically feasible, and high treatment efficiency. Rotating biological contactors (RBC), an attached growth biological process offers advantage of low operating cost, simple configuration and structure, reduced bionomical footprint and thus has been extensively employed for organics and nitrogen removal. In this study, RBC was used for the treatment of synthetic domestic wastewater operating at high hydraulic and organic loading rate to demonstrate the biological performance. The results showed that the RBC achieved a treatment efficiency for COD, ammonium, TN and turbidity of 70.2%, 95.2%, 70%, and 78.9 %, respectively. The efficient nitrogen removal and increased nitrate concentration signify the presence of nitrifying bacteria which actively degrade the nitrogen compounds through the nitrification process. Thus, this system is a sound alternative for both domestic and industrial wastewater treatment for decentralized applications.

Greywater is the major part of water consumption in houses. Greywater should be treated to complying with the specifications for several purposes such as toilet flush, landscaping irrigation, and agriculture. The treatment efficiency of both MBR and RBC systems was investigated by using a verified mathematical model. The simulation program GPS-X (version 6.0) was used to simulate both MBR and RBC systems. The simulation model for biological treatment for both MBR and RBC systems is based on Activated Sludge Model 1 (ASM1). The experimental data for model calibration and verification for the MBR system were taken from experimental work done at Tubitak, Marmara Research Center, Turkey ATASOY. As well as the RBC proposed model was verified also by using RBC experimental results for a pilot plant according to BABAN. The RBC pilot plant consists of three units, The first is the RBC unit, the second unit is the settling tank and the last unit is the disinfection tank. The results of the MBR plant showed that the removal efficiencies of the greywater were: 95% for COD; 95% for BOD5; 96% for TKN; 92% for NH4+ and 99% for TSS. Whereas, the results of the RBC show that, The BOD efficiency removal was ranged between about 93.0 to 96.0 %, and for the total SS removal was ranged between 84.0 to 95.0 %. The MBR system provides complete nitrification and suspended solid removal. The RBC system provides less nitrification process and suspended solid removal. The effluent of the rotating biological contactors units for the greywater could be reused after filtration and disinfection with minimal cost of operation. The effluent of the membrane bioreactor unit needs only disinfection before reuse.

Abstract The huge amounts of pollutants in nature surface water in. This contaminates due to different operations in surface water. During the past fifty years, increasing attention has centered on the discharge of sewage into coastal waters. This practice has been widely criticized on the grounds that sewage-polluted seawater is a health hazard to bathers. The pollution of the surface water is becoming more and more serious. The marine environment has undergone great changes. This research is presented two methods to control pollution and rehabilitation environment. First method by using temporary floating a waterfall for removing containment from the surface water and reducing concentration total suspended matter in surface water and reducing concentrations for phosphate, nitrogen, organic carbon. Second method by using towed rotating biological contactors to reducing concentrations for phosphate, nitrogen, and organic carbon. To control effects of algae bloom occurs. These two methods are converted to heterogeneous reactor with solid catalysts; this reactor is multi step treatment. First step is screening and second step is solid catalyst bed reactor. As waterfall or towed rotating biological contactor is multi bed reactor. The water quality assessment for selection best scheme for enhancement water quality for surface water is based on acceptable japan environmental ministry guidelines for surface water quality level for bathing.

Abstract When implementing a sanitation system, the selection of treatment process can be difficult. Beyond removal efficiency and effluent concentrations, reliability should be taken into account. This study compares reliability of French vertical flow treatment wetlands (F-VFTW) with the four main decentralized wastewater treatment technologies in small communities in the French Overseas Territories (FOT). Analysis of 963 regulatory self-monitoring sampling campaigns performed on 213 wastewater treatment plants show that operational disruptions due to sludge loss and loss of nitrification are often reported for activated sludge technology; rotating biological contactors often suffer from weak settlement; facultative pond removal is limited by algae; and F-VFTW fulfills all the French regulatory objectives at a frequency of 90 to 95%. In addition, the data from this study are compared to a similar database from Brazil using a statistical approach (coefficient of reliability). Amongst the eight decentralized wastewater treatment technologies evaluated, F-VFTW appears to be the most appropriate for achieving the discharge standard with a reliability close to 95%. Its reliability to face both environmental (rainfall) and social (maintenance capacities) constraints is a key parameter.

Pengolahan limbah cair sebagai pencegahan pencemaran lingkungan, limbah cair memiliki tingkat pencemaran yang tinggi, limbah cair  juga mempunyai kandungan BOD dan COD yang tinggi dan bila tidak diolah akan merusak lingkungan. Kegiatan pengolahan limbah cair bertujuan untuk mereduksi volume, agar mempermudah dalam penanganan dalam pengolahan selanjutnya. Pengolahan limbah cair harus dilengkapi dengan fasilitas yang menunjang sesuai dengan ketentuan, memenuhi frekuensi dalam pengambilan sampel limbah cair, memenuhi baku mutu efluen limbah cair, dan memenuhi penataan pelaporan hasil uji laboratorium limbah cair. Berbagai metode teknologi pengolahan limbah cair telah dikembangkan seperti elektrokoagulasi, advance oxidation process (AOP), reaktor microbial fuel cells (MFCs), elektrokoagulasi, proses film mikrobiologis (Biofilm), serta rotating biological contactors (RBC), Plasma Dielectric Barrier Discharge (DBD), teknologi membran.
