The current issue of Nordic Research in Music Education presents six research articles that in various ways call into question beliefs and established truths within music education, such as perceptions of teacher qualifications for music activities in preschool and primary school, and and who institutions select and educate to become music teachers. Furthermore, the articles address how notions of diversity, intercultural music education and genre categorizations influence the construction of content in music education, and what happens when these categories travel between music cultures and their reconstruction as content in the classroom.

Abstract The purpose of this study was to implement an occupational therapy intervention that could be used for telehealth services with an emphasis on participants learning ways to independently choose and sustain engagement in meaningful music activities, known as occupations. The researchers’ aim was to examine how music occupation interventions lower risks of occupational deprivation (i.e., prolonged restriction from participation in necessary or meaningful activities) that could occur due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Eight adults participated who were 65 years or older, lived in the community, and enjoyed music. The researchers used narrative qualitative methodology to analyze pre- and post-intervention focus group data. The participants completed seven intervention sessions designed to increase and sustain music engagement outside of the sessions. The pre-intervention focus group data resulted in an occupational pattern analysis and a single occupational narrative. Triangulation of data post-intervention included the two focus groups and their pattern analyses and narratives, field notes from each intervention session, and documents produced through group completion. The final analysis produced an occupational change pattern analysis and narrative. The focus of the change narrative was on the participant’s management or prevention of occupational deprivation. The researchers identified several common themes involving change in routines and habits to include regular engagement in meaningful music activities, skills for using occupational participation as an important method of coping with COVID-19, and developing new technological skills to access music to replace in-person participation of attending live concerts and shows when deemed unsafe because of potential for virus transmission.

This article conveys research about participatory community singing that I explore through various lenses. I present thoughts and reflections from my interview with Alice Parker, who has many years of experience leading community singing events as well as ethnographic data collected from a monthly community singing event in the American Midwest. I analyse these data through the lens of a ‘traditional’ choral conductor who, prior to undertaking this investigation, had little knowledge about participatory singing traditions; I also utilize scholarship on the differences between participatory and performative music activities. In our interview, Ms Parker drew on many years of experience in both areas to provide touchstones for facilitating community singing events and also the distinct differences between these events and more traditional choral settings. Perhaps in reflecting on this dichotomy, facilitators of these two important forms of music making might learn from one another.

BackgroundResidents of long term care facilities (LTCFs) and their professional caregivers have been hit hard by the coronavirus. During the COVID-19 outbreak, many countries imposed national visitor-bans for LTCFs. In the Netherlands, the ban was in place from 20 March 2020 onwards and ended (partly) on 15 June 2020. The usual meaningful and pleasant day structure that is created through organized (group) activities, was heavily impacted by the visitor ban. It remains unclear which particular types of activities were stopped, whether ‘alternative’ activities were introduced that may acquire a structural character in the future, and how this affected care workers.MethodsWe conducted online questionnaire research among LTCF residents, family members and care professionals at two time points; six weeks after the visitor-ban was implemented (T1) and one week after the ban was (partly) lifted (T2). The three groups received questionnaires on the consequences of the COVID-19 outbreak and the restrictive measures in place. Respondents were recruited independently for each measurement. This study only uses care professionals’ data. The influence of the up- and downscaling of activities on care professionals’ burden and ability to provide care was investigated using multivariate multiple linear regression.Results811 professionals completed the questionnaire during T1 and 324 care workers during T2. A decrease in regular group activities during the visitor-ban was reported. Especially exercise activities, creative activities and music activities were undertaken less frequently. Also domestic activities, such as eating together and watching television, took place less frequently as compared to before the visitor-ban.Activities that could be easily done on the unit, with sufficient social distance, were undertaken more frequently, such as music activities, conversations and playing games in the living room. The impact of the up- and downscaling of activities on care professional burden, and the perceived ability to provide adequate care, will be presented.ConclusionsActivities are an important means for residents of long term care facilities for obtaining pleasure and giving a meaningful structure to the day. Future lessons can be learned from the adjustments that had to be made in the range of activities offered during the visitor-ban.

This study compares different types of regulation that motivate school students to participate in their formal education and in music entertainment. The framework of self-determination is used in this study to convey various forms of regulation that play important roles in driving students to take action in both settings. A survey result based on 207 student respondents in Thailand revealed that although it is not uncommon to anticipate that there could be a variety of reasons for establishing this educational participation, ranging from extrinsic controls to intrinsic values, the students were more likely to be extrinsically and personally pressured in their formal study, compared to participating in music. On the other hand, they were prone to be more intrinsically driven when joining in music activities than studying.

Background: This scoping review analyzed research about how music activities may affect participants' health and well-being. Primary outcomes were measures of health (including symptoms and health behaviors) and well-being. Secondary measures included a range of psychosocial processes such as arousal, mood, social connection, physical activation or relaxation, cognitive functions, and identity. Diverse music activities were considered: receptive and intentional music listening; sharing music; instrument playing; group singing; lyrics and rapping; movement and dance; and songwriting, composition, and improvisation.Methods: Nine databases were searched with terms related to the eight music activities and the psychosocial variables of interest. Sixty-three papers met selection criteria, representing 6,975 participants of all ages, nationalities, and contexts.Results: Receptive and intentional music listening were found to reduce pain through changes in physiological arousal in some studies but not others. Shared music listening (e.g., concerts or radio programs) enhanced social connections and mood in older adults and in hospital patients. Music listening and carer singing decreased agitation and improved posture, movement, and well-being of people with dementia. Group singing supported cognitive health and well-being of older adults and those with mental health problems, lung disease, stroke, and dementia through its effects on cognitive functions, mood, and social connections. Playing a musical instrument was associated with improved cognitive health and well-being in school students, older adults, and people with mild brain injuries via effects on motor, cognitive and social processes. Dance and movement with music programs were associated with improved health and well-being in people with dementia, women with postnatal depression, and sedentary women with obesity through various cognitive, physical, and social processes. Rapping, songwriting, and composition helped the well-being of marginalized people through effects on social and cultural inclusion and connection, self-esteem and empowerment.Discussion: Music activities offer a rich and underutilized resource for health and well-being to participants of diverse ages, backgrounds, and settings. The review provides preliminary evidence that particular music activities may be recommended for specific psychosocial purposes and for specific health conditions.
