Transmission efficiency is an important index to evaluate the transmission performance and energy consumption of gear transmission systems. To analyse the transmission efficiency of elliptic gears, the load torque fluctuation model of elliptic gear is established to analyse the influence of load torque of an elliptic gear transmission system on the torque of input and output. The torque data of input and output under different working conditions are obtained by conducting an elliptic gear transmission test. Finally, the transmission efficiency of the elliptic gear pair is obtained through the torque measurement data of the elliptic gear transmission test, and its variation law under different working conditions is analysed. The results show that the transmission efficiency of the elliptic gear transmission system changes constantly and presents an increasing trend with the increase of load torque and a decreasing trend with the increase of speed.

In this work, we systematically analyze the impact of three kinds of Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM) imbalances, including bias deviation, amplitude mismatch, and differential time skew in intensity-modulation direct-detection (IM-DD) links. It is shown that, for power fading limited transmission, the imbalances can be utilized as advantages rather than impairments. Specifically, the bias deviation with single-arm driven mode and amplitude mismatch with differential driven mode can increase the available bandwidth by shifting the frequency of fading notches. Meanwhile, time skew provides another way to avoid fading by shaping the double sideband (DSB) signal into a vestigial sideband (VSB) with an asymmetrical transfer function. In the transmission experiment, 34 Gbaud Nyquist 6/8-ary pulse amplitude modulation (PAM-6/8) signals are used for investigation in a 20 km dispersion-uncompensated standard single-mode fiber (SSMF) link. With the help of a Volterra nonlinear equalizer, all three kinds of imbalances can achieve bit-error rates (BERs) below the 7% and 20% hard-decision forward error correction (HD-FEC) thresholds for PAM-6 and PAM-8 signals, respectively. The received power sensitivity is also compared at the back-to-back (BTB) case and after fiber transmission. Both numerical simulation and experimental demonstration confirm that the dispersion-induced power fading can be effectively suppressed with bias, amplitude, or skew imbalance, providing a feasible solution for transmission distance extension of C-band DD links.

Abstract Carbon nanotube (CNT) field-emission X-ray source has great potential in X-ray communication (XCOM) because of its controllable emission and instantaneous response. A novel voltage loading mode was proposed in this work to achieve high-frequency pulse X ray-emission. The characteristics of cathode current and pulse X-ray versus voltage, frequency, and pulse amplitude were studied, and XCOM data transmission experiment was carried out. Results showed that the CNT cold cathode X-ray source, as a communication signal source, could work in 1.05 MHz pulse emission frequency. When the grid voltage was higher than 470 V, the pulse X-ray waveform amplitude achieved peak, and the shape exhibited a pseudo square wave. The duty cycle of the X-ray waveform exceeded 50%, reaching 56% when the pulse frequency reached 1 MHz. In the XCOM data transmission experiment, the pulsed X-ray waveform was well consistent with the loading data signal voltage waveform under different pulse-emission frequencies. This work realized the X-ray high-frequency pulse emission of CNT cold cathode X-ray source and lays a foundation for the development and application of CNT cold cathode X-ray source in XCOM.

Avian influenza A viruses (IAVs) pose risks to public, agricultural, and wildlife health. Bridge hosts are spillover hosts that share habitat with both maintenance hosts (e.g., mallards) and target hosts (e.g., poultry). We conducted a comprehensive assessment of European starlings (Sturnus vulgaris), a common visitor to both urban and agricultural environments, to assess whether this species might act as a potential maintenance or bridge host for IAVs. First, we experimentally inoculated starlings with a wild bird IAV to investigate susceptibility and replication kinetics. Next, we evaluated whether IAV might spill over to starlings from sharing resources with a widespread IAV reservoir host. We accomplished this using a specially designed transmission cage to simulate natural environmental transmission by exposing starlings to water shared with IAV-infected mallards (Anas platyrhynchos). We then conducted a contact study to assess intraspecies transmission between starlings. In the initial experimental infection study, all inoculated starlings shed viral RNA and seroconverted. All starlings in the transmission study became infected and shed RNA at similar levels. All but one of these birds seroconverted, but detectable antibodies were relatively transient, falling to negative levels in a majority of birds by 59 days post contact. None of the contact starlings in the intraspecies transmission experiment became infected. In summary, we demonstrated that starlings may have the potential to act as IAV bridge hosts if they share water with IAV-infected waterfowl. However, starlings are unlikely to act as maintenance hosts due to limited, if any, intraspecies transmission. In addition, starlings have a relatively brief antibody response which should be considered when interpreting serology from field samples. Further study is needed to evaluate the potential for transmission from starlings to poultry, a possibility enhanced by starling’s behavioral trait of forming very large flocks which can descend on poultry facilities when natural resources are scarce.

Stony coral tissue loss disease (SCTLD) was initially documented in Florida in 2014 and outbreaks with similar characteristics have since appeared in disparate areas throughout the northern Caribbean, causing significant declines in coral communities. SCTLD is characterized by focal or multifocal lesions of denuded skeleton caused by rapid tissue loss and affects at least 22 reef-building species of Caribbean corals. A tissue-loss disease consistent with the case definition of SCTLD was first observed in the U.S. Virgin Islands (USVI) in January of 2019 off the south shore of St. Thomas at Flat Cay. The objective of the present study was to characterize species susceptibility to the disease present in St. Thomas in a controlled laboratory transmission experiment. Fragments of six species of corals (Colpophyllia natans, Montastraea cavernosa, Orbicella annularis, Porites astreoides, Pseudodiploria strigosa, and Siderastrea siderea) were simultaneously incubated with (but did not physically contact) SCTLD-affected colonies of Diploria labyrinthiformis and monitored for lesion appearance over an 8 day experimental period. Paired fragments from each corresponding coral genotype were equivalently exposed to apparently healthy colonies of D. labyrinthiformis to serve as controls; none of these fragments developed lesions throughout the experiment. When tissue-loss lesions appeared and progressed in a disease treatment, the affected coral fragment, and its corresponding control genet, were removed and preserved for future analysis. Based on measures including disease prevalence and incidence, relative risk of lesion development, and lesion progression rates, O. annularis, C. natans, and S. siderea showed the greatest susceptibility to SCTLD in the USVI. These species exhibited earlier average development of lesions, higher relative risk of lesion development, greater lesion prevalence, and faster lesion progression rates compared with the other species, some of which are considered to be more susceptible based on field observations (e.g., P. strigosa). The average transmission rate in the present study was comparable to tank studies in Florida, even though disease donor species differed. Our findings suggest that the tissue loss disease affecting reefs of the USVI has a similar epizootiology to that observed in other regions, particularly Florida.

This research focuses on the analysis of the measurement result of the virtual lock-in amplifier (virtual-LIA) in the light transmission experiment as the trial step of developing the virtual-LIA. The virtual-LIA used in this research is designed by using the Vernier sensor DAQ as the data acquisition and the LabVIEW as the programming media. The design of virtual-LIA is based on the mathematical operations of LIA. The type of virtual-LIA is a single phase with the capabilities to process the external reference signal. Light transmission experiments are carried out using formazin polymer suspension with turbidity level of 3000 NTU, 3500 NTU, and 4000 NTU as the medium in which light is passed. The accuracy of the measurement results is known by comparing the results of virtual-LIA with real-LIA SR510. The experiments are also carried out in bright and darkroom conditions to determine the ability of virtual-LIA in reducing noise signals. Based on the experiment, the results obtained that the measurement accuracy of the virtual-LIA developed is above 94% compared to the LIA SR510. Virtual-LIA could measure small signals with and without noise with the average percentage of differences measured between dark and bright conditions is 0.54%.

The importance of preventing damage from pluvial flooding has been increasing under global climate change. The discovery of premonitory symptoms of pluvial flooding enables effective evacuation and inundation prevention activities. However, apparatuses that automatically detect this in real time are not widespread. There are difficulties in the cost of installing them and the agreements made by the parties concerned, especially in cities. To solve this problem, we devised an apparatus to be installed inside a catch basin that detects its water level. The water level in the catch basin may indicate a sign of pluvial flooding, and the number of people involved in operating the catch basin is smaller than that of facilities on the ground. In order to reduce the cost of installation and operation, we adopted Low Power Wide Area (LPWA), which is a communication method that enables wireless transmission of detected information over long distances for a long time using batteries. So far, for catch basins, a wireless transmission experiment was conducted using LoRa, which is part of LPWA. However, Sigfox, which uses the same frequency as LoRa but has a different wireless system, has not been verified. In this study, the reliability of wireless communication was assessed by apparatuses using LoRa and Sigfox side by side in each catch basin in two places in a densely populated city. The number of experiment days and transmissions differed depending on the apparatus, with the number of days ranging from 97–151 and the number of transmissions from 2328–3748. The reliability in the experiment ranged from 99.97–99.53%. The experimental results showed that wireless transmission was possible with high reliability using either the LoRa or Sigfox system from inside these catch basins. This study expands the options for communication infrastructure that can be used for apparatuses that detect premonitory symptoms of pluvial flooding. This will enable a reduction in installation costs and will expand the range of areas of potential installation.
