The project is conducting a series of muonic X-ray measurements in medium- and high-Z nuclei at PSI, utilizing a high-purity germanium detector array, in-beam muon detectors, and a modern digital data-acquisition system. A novel hydrogen target for muon transfer was developed, enabling measurements with as little as a few micrograms of target material. First measurements with radioactive Cm and Ra targets were conducted, aimed at determining their nuclear charge radii. These serve as important input for upcoming atomic parity violation experiments. The apparatus is also used to perform a feasibility study of an atomic parity violation experiment with the 2s-1s2s−1s muonic X-ray transition. In addition, the setup has been made available for a wider range of nuclear, particle, and solid-state physics measurements.

AbstractThe European Spallation Source (ESS) is a neutron-scattering facility funded and supported in collaboration with 13 European countries in Lund, Sweden. Cryogenic cooling at ESS is vital particularly for the linear accelerator, the hydrogen target moderators, a test stand for cryomodules, the neutron instruments and their sample environments. The paper will focus on the control system design for the different cryogenic subsystems, hardware and software selected, industry and in-house development, advantages and disadvantages of the chosen setup and operational experience. There is also a lessons learned, feedback from providers and stakeholders and an outlook for further development described.

AbstractWe report on a measurement of Spin Density Matrix Elements (SDMEs) in hard exclusive $$\omega $$ ω meson muoproduction on the proton at COMPASS using 160 GeV/c polarised $$ \mu ^{+}$$ μ + and $$ \mu ^{-}$$ μ - beams impinging on a liquid hydrogen target. The measurement covers the range 5.0 GeV/$$c^2$$ c 2 $$< W<$$ < W < 17.0 GeV/$$c^2$$ c 2 , with the average kinematics $$\langle Q^{2} \rangle =$$ ⟨ Q 2 ⟩ = 2.1 (GeV/c)$$^2$$ 2 , $$\langle W \rangle = 7.6$$ ⟨ W ⟩ = 7.6  GeV/$$c^2$$ c 2 , and $$\langle p^{2}_{\mathrm{T}} \rangle = 0.16$$ ⟨ p T 2 ⟩ = 0.16  (GeV/c)$$^2$$ 2 . Here, $$Q^2$$ Q 2 denotes the virtuality of the exchanged photon, W the mass of the final hadronic system and $$p_T$$ p T the transverse momentum of the $$\omega $$ ω meson with respect to the virtual-photon direction. The measured non-zero SDMEs for the transitions of transversely polarised virtual photons to longitudinally polarised vector mesons ($$\gamma ^*_T \rightarrow V_L$$ γ T ∗ → V L ) indicate a violation of s-channel helicity conservation. Additionally, we observe a sizeable contribution of unnatural-parity-exchange (UPE) transitions that decreases with increasing W. The results provide important input for modelling Generalised Parton Distributions (GPDs). In particular, they may allow to evaluate in a model-dependent way the contribution of UPE transitions and assess the role of parton helicity-flip GPDs in exclusive $$\omega $$ ω production.

Using collision spectroscopy based on precision measurements of the kinetic energy of projectile ions that capture an electron, we measured the state selective electron capture cross sections of formation of He^+(n) ions at collision 3^He^{2 +} ions with an energy of E = 1.4-10 keV/a.m.u. with hydrogen atoms. The atomic hydrogen target with a degree of dissociation 78% at a temperature of tungsten dissociation cell 2180K has been made.

The nucleon-like member N(1685) of the speculative baryon antidecuplet denotes one possible explanation for the narrow peak-structure around W = 1.68 GeV observed in the total cross section of η- photoproduction off the neutron. If this baryon existed, it would likely to be seen in other reactions as well. While the aforementioned peak, whatever its nature is, was confirmed by several experiments, claims for signa tures of the N(1685) in other reactions and observables are mainly made by V. Kuznetsov et al. using GRAAL data. Their latest work suggests signals of both N(1685) charge states in all isospin channels of ηπ- photopro duction off the proton and neutron. This contribution reports on challenging these claims with data from the A2 at MAMI experiment employing photon beam energies from Ey=1.43-1.58 GeV. The ηπ0p and ηπ+n final states produced from a hydrogen target were studied and new analysis cuts were tested in order to enhance a possible signal.

An experimental program has been approved at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility to measure the (ep,e’K+)Y reactions using the CLAS12 setup in Hall B. Data have been obtained using a 7.5 GeV electron beam, impinging upon a liquid hydrogen target in the CLAS12 center. Scattered electrons have been detected in an angle range of 2.5° to 4.5° by the Forward Tagger (FT) and at angles greater than 5° in the CLAS12 Forward Detector, allowing to measure the KY electroproduction differential cross section and to probe the Q2 evolution of the N* resonances electrocouplings in the Q2 range from 0.05 GeV2 to 3 GeV2. The study of the Q2 dependence of the electrocouplings will provide a crucial tool to investigate the possible hybrid nature of the N* resonances. Preliminary results from CLAS12 data are compared with simulated data using a realistic Gent Regge plus resonance event generator
