Crop yield decrease is the main concern when a pathogen or plague is identified in an agriculture field. Thus, part of this issue can be attributed to plant-parasitic nematodes (PPNs), such as Meloidogyne species, due to, most of the time, the hard diagnosis, and non-specific symptoms. Its management is mainly based on chemical pesticides, followed by a few potential biological control agents, and the management system. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the effects of biological agents in Meloidogyne incognita control in different soil systems. For that, two biological products were chosen, Trichoderma asperellum BV10 and Bacillus amyloliquefaciens BV03, and soils were sampled from three different managements systems: (i) soybean no-tilled system at Goiás state, Brazil; (ii) forest soil at Goiás state, Brazil, and (iii) soybean conventional managed system at Mato Grosso do Sul state, Brazil. Biocontrol and growth promotion effects, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and soil respiration were determined in vegetation house and laboratory, respectively. As a result, both BV10 and BV03 had significant nematode control activity, comparing to control treatment, in all the three soils systems. Plus, the number of immobile nematodes by potential VOCs had significant increase when BV03 was applied, while the application of BV10 agent raised the soil respiration rate. In conclusion, both biocontrol agents presented great efficiency in control M. incognita, with better performance of BV03. Lastly, more studies must be done to elucidate how the resident soil microbiome can influence on biocontrol agent establishment and performance, as well as the consequence of the application of biological products on soil microbiome network.

Abstract Background Bacillus amyloliquefaciens (BA) and Bacillus subtilis (BS) are usually used as feed supplements directly or bacterial inoculants in biological feeds for animals. However, few research have reported the effects of BA and BS on fermentation characteristics and bacterial community successions of whole-plant corn silage during ensiling. If the BA and BS inoculants have positive effects on silages, then they could not only improve fermentation characteristics, but also deliver BA or BS viable cells to ruminants, which would play its probiotic effect. Therefore, the objectives of this study were to investigate the effects of BA and BS on the fermentation, chemical characteristics, bacterial community and their metabolic pathway of whole-plant corn silage. Results Freshly chopped whole-plant corn was inoculated without or with BA and BS, respectively, and ensiled for 1, 3, 7, 14 and 60 d. Results showed that BA and BS inoculations increased lactic acid concentrations of whole-plant corn silages compared with control, and BA inoculation decreased acetic acid concentrations, whereas BS inoculation decreased fiber contents and increased crude protein (CP) content. Higher water-soluble carbohydrate contents and lower starch contents were observed in BA- and BS-inoculated silages compared with that in control. The decreased CP content and increased non-protein nitrogen content were observed in BA-inoculated silage, which was consistent with the higher amino acid metabolism abundances observed in BA-inoculated silage. In addition, it was noteworthy that BA and BS inoculations increased the metabolism of cofactors and vitamins, and decreased the relative abundances of drug resistance: antimicrobial pathways. We also found that the bacterial metabolism pathways were clearly separated into three clusters based on the ensiling times of whole-plant corn silage in the present study. There were no significant differences in bacterial community compositions among the three groups during ensiling. However, BA and BS inoculations decreased the relative abundances of undesirable bacteria such as Acetobacter and Acinetobacter. Conclusion Our findings suggested that the BS strain was more suitable as silage inoculants than the BA strain in whole-plant corn silage in this study.

Root rot disease is a serious infection leading to production loss of Chinese wolfberry (Lycium barbarum). This study tested the potential for two bacterial biological control agents, Bacillus amyloliquefaciens HSB1 and FZB42, against five fungal pathogens that frequently cause root rot in Chinese wolfberry. Both HSB1 and FZB42 were found to inhibit fungal mycelial growth, in vitro and in planta, as well as to promote the growth of wolfberry seedlings. In fact, a biocontrol experiment showed efficiency of 100% with at least one treatment involving each biocontrol strain against Fusarium oxysporum. Metagenomic sequencing was used to assess bacterial community shifts in the wolfberry rhizosphere upon introduction of each biocontrol strain. Results showed that HSB1 and FZB42 differentially altered the abundances of different taxa present and positively influenced various functions of inherent wolfberry rhizosphere bacteria. This study highlights the application of biocontrol method in the suppression of fungal pathogens that cause root rot disease in wolfberry, which is useful for agricultural extension agents and commercial growers.
