Carotenoids are the pigments present in plants, animals, and microorganisms which are responsible for a broad variety of colors found in nature. Their capacity as antioxidants mainly established their marketable success as health, food, and feed supplements, and cosmetics components. Currently, chemical synthesis dominates the worldwide market; however, due to the high biological value of natural carotenoids, the production scheme is moving towards microbial production as a profitable alternative.

Abstract The study aimed to observe the effect of adding probiotic powder on the hematological status and egg production in layer-phase laying hens. This research was conducted for 30 days, located in a layer farms in Sumedang Regency, West Java. The production of probiotic powder was carried out at the Central Laboratory, Padjadjaran University. The blood was analyzed at the Multitest Commercial Laboratory, Margahayu Raya, Bandung City. The variables observed in this study were the levels of erythrocytes, leukocytes, hematocrit, and egg production in layer-phase laying hens. This study used an experimental method with statistical analysis using a completely randomized design (CRD) with four levels of probiotics (0%, 2%, 3%, 4%) and five replications. The research data were analyzed using the 0.05% Variety Print Test. The result of this research showed that the addition of probiotic powder gave the same effect on the levels of erythrocytes, leukocytes, and hematocrits of laying hens. However, probiotic powder increased egg production along with the addition of the dose of probiotic powder. It can be seen that 2%, 3% and 4% probiotic powder increased 64.1%, 41.5% and 118% egg production compared to control.

The study aimed to investigate cholesterol content in chicken breast and thigh muscles by the influence of feed supplements of various content of essential oils. The experiment was carried out under practical conditions in a poultry farm with broiler chickens of the Cobb 500 hybrid combination according to the feed supplement used thyme essential oil, cinnamon essential oil, commercial citrus fruit essential oil, and their combination. The control group was without the use of experimental feed supplements and commercial coccidiostats were used in their feed mixtures. The experiment lasted 40 days in welfare conditions. Broiler chickens were used for sample preparation of breast and thigh muscles with the skin and their analysis for dry matter, fat and cholesterol contents. Samples were analyzed using a Nicolet 6700 FT-IR Fourier transform infrared spectrometer. The results were processed by the SAS system program, version 8.2. The results, which were evaluated, indicated a tendency to reduce the cholesterol content in chicken breast muscle due to cinnamon essential oil and the combination of cinnamon essential oil with citrus fruit essential oil as well as thyme essential oil with citrus fruit essential. In the achieved results of dry matter, fat, and cholesterol content in breast and thigh muscles, the difference between the effects of the used feed supplements based on essential oils and concerning the control group were not statistically significant p >0.05. The correlation was a statistically significant strong linear relation only between dry matter content and fat content due to thyme and cinnamon essential oils. In conclusion, it was stated that the investigation of the feed supplement effect based on essential oils is an open question concerning the production of safe food of animal origin.

Background: Hematological indices are important factors for the evaluations health status. Plant materials are often used as feed supplements by farmers to combat animal health challenges and have been a source of relief for the management of anemia in developing countries; for example, Whitfieldia lateritia is used in folklore medicine as anti-anemic agent. The hematopoietic, electrolyte and glycemic activities of Whitfieldia lateritia leaf decoction and vitali supplement on phenylhydrazine (PHZ)-induced anemic cockerels were investigated. Methods: A total of 60 cockerels were purchased and allowed to acclimatize for two weeks. Thereafter, classified into 12 groups (designated as T1….T12) of 5 cockerels each, where T2, T3 and T4 received 100, 200 and 400 mg/kg body weight W. lateritia leaf decoction, respectively. Anemia was induced in groups, T5……T12 by the administration of 10 mg/kg body weight PHZ for 3 consecutive days; thereafter, T5, T6 and T7 received 100, 200 and 400 mg/kg body weight W. lateritia leaf decoction, respectively; T8, T9 and T10 were administered 100, 200 and 400 mg/kg body weight vitali supplement, respectively; while T1, T11 and T12 were the normal control, negative control and baseline control, respectively. The treatment lasted for 30 days. Conclusion: Saponin, flavonoids, tannins, cardiac glycosides and steroids were detected. The glucose concentrations and hematological indices of the cockerels treated with the W. lateritia leaf decoction and the vitali supplement compared with the normal control. The W. lateritia leaf decoction displayed positive hematological, electrolyte and glycemic activities, thus may justify the use in maintaining animal health.
