Abstract Objectives The aim of this study was to investigate BAP1, OGT and YY1 genes and protein levels in 12 samples (8 males, 4 females) of eyelid tumor tissue with basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and 12 normal control subjects (8 males, 4 females). Methods The expression levels of these genes were determined with RT-PCR and the protein levels and expression using ELISA and IHC methods, respectively. Results In RT-PCR analysis, statistically significant upregulated expression was determined of 1.84-fold of BAP1, 2.85-fold of OGT and 3.06-fold of YY1 genes (p < 0.05). In the patient group, compared to the control group, there was a similar statistically significant strong correlation between the proteins (BAP1 and YY1; r = 0.850, BAP1 and OGT; r = 0.811, OGT and YY1; r = 0.755) (p < 0.05). In the ELISA and IHC analysis methods, a significant increase in BAP1 and YY1 protein expression levels was observed compared to the control group (p < 0.05). Conclusions The study results demonstrated that BAP1 and YY1 genes and protein levels were upregulated in eyelid tumor tissue with BCC.

Introduction: Eyelid tumor refers to the primary eyelid skin and accessory tumors, which not only affects the appearance and vision, and even local infiltration and distant metastasis, thereby threatening life. Surgical resection is the most important and effective treatment, but tumor resection often leads to a wide range of eyelid defects, significantly affecting the shape and function of the eyelid. Therefore, the eyelid defect must be repaired after resection to achieve the purpose of aesthetic appearance and protection of the eyeball. The objective of the study was to analyze the clinical results of local flap transfer and scleral transplantation in repairing skin defect after eyelid tumor operation. Methods: Forty patients with postoperative skin defects of eyelid tumors admitted from December 2008 to December 2018 were taken for analysis and divided into two groups, 20 cases in each group. The control group underwent autologous lip mucous membrane transfer and nearby skin flap, while the experimental group received local skin flap rotation and scleral allograft repair. The clinical effect of repair of the two groups were compared. Results: In the experimental group, the effect of clinical repairs were better, the difference of height of palpebralfissure and the length of palpebral fissure were compared with the control group, which showed statistical significance favoring the experimental group. Conclusion: Local flap transfer and scleral transplantation has better clinical outcome to repair the skin defect after operation of eyelid tumor.

AIM: The aim of the study was to find a correlation between the occurrence of eyelid tumors with age, gender, occupation, and residential area. SUBJECT AND METHODS: This is an analytical study with a cross-sectional approach conducted among 111 patients, includes all inpatients and outpatients who have been diagnosed with eyelid tumors starting from January 2014 to June 2018 in RSUP Haji Adam Malik, Medan, Indonesia. RESULTS: From 111 patients, 75 women (67.6%) and 36 men (32.4%) were found (PR: 1.5, 95% clinical incidence [CI] = 0.85–2.65). Majority patients were 51–60 years old (30.6%) (PR = 2.72, 95% CI = 1.47–4.23). Mostly patients reside in lowland area (Medan city) (21.6%), while those living in highland area are more susceptible to eyelid tumor (PR = 1.13, 95% CI = 0.52–2.47%). Overall patients are indoor worker (housewives) (34.2%), but outdoor worker are more likely affected (PR = 2.26, 95% CI = 0.95–5.36). Correlation between occurrence of an eyelid tumor and age are found (p = 0.001; R: 0.454), as well as the correlation between occurrence of eyelid tumor and occupation (p = 0.05; R: 0.183). Meanwhile, the occurrence of an eyelid tumors and gender was not correlated (p = 0.15; R: 0.135) same as the occurrence of an eyelid tumor and residential area (p = 0.723; R = 0.03). CONCLUSION: Age and occupation have a correlation with the occurrence of an eyelid tumor, while gender and residential have not correlated.

Kaposi's sarcoma is a multifocal tumor from vascular endothelium with a low grade of malignancy. It develops due to underlying immune deficiency and is associated with human herpesvirus 8. Kaposi's sarcoma of the eyelids is rare, and its diagnosis can be difficult both for ophthalmologists and oncodermatologists. The paper describes six clinical cases of Kaposi's sarcoma with involvement of the eyelids. Three patients had an HIV-associated type of the tumor. One patient had an immunosuppressive type of the tumor during immunosuppressive treatment after kidney transplantation. Two elderly patients had Kaposi's sarcoma of the classic type. Tumors of the eyelids developed after several years of skin involvement. All patients had advanced (nodular) stage of Kaposi's sarcoma of the eyelids, whereas the skin tumors looked as spots (maculas) or papules (macular or papular stage of the disease). The eyelid tumor presented as an extensive dark red tumor nodule distinctly separate from the adjacent tissues. In all cases, the eyelid tumor was big and hindered the sight. All the patients were treated by an oncodermatologist and/or a specialist in infectious diseases, depending on the clinical type of the disease. Kaposi's sarcoma rarely involves the eyelid skin or conjunctiva; however, in immunodeficient patients it must be included into the list for the differential diagnosis of eyelid tumors.
