Abstract The study examined the effects of a coaching intervention on teachers’ ability to implement academically responsive instruction through flexible instructional arrangements in self-contained classrooms for students who are deaf and hard of hearing, as well as the impact of instructional arrangements on students’ academic engagement. Using a changing criterion design replicated across teachers, three-teacher participants with diverse backgrounds received differentiated coaching to implement flexible instructional arrangements. Results showed that coaching had an impact on all three teachers’ implementation of flexible instructional arrangements. Concomitantly, students increased their active engagement and decreased passive engagement when they spent less time in whole class and more time in small group and child-managed arrangements. Teachers maintained the use of flexible instructional arrangements and students continued to be more actively engaged than pre-intervention. Limitations and implications for practice and research are discussed.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to develop representations for teacher coaching sessions that are (1) useful for communicating the session to other coaches or researchers and (2) capture the roles of the coach as convener of dialogue for teacher development as well as facilitator of design for learning.Design/methodology/approachTwo coaching sessions with preservice science teachers are analysed using two forms of discourse analysis: (1) the T-SEDA coding scheme (Vrikki et al., 2019) to analyse the dialogic interaction; and (2) a novel coding scheme to show the development of the design for learning over time. A synthetic representation is developed that combines and communicates the results of both analyses.FindingsResults show a novel way of representing coaching sessions with teachers during design for learning. Theoretical claims about the utility of this representation are made with reference to the literature.Practical implicationsThe representations and methods for developing them are useful to researchers in analysing coaching sessions. They have application for helping coaches to communicate their practice with one another. They are a step towards understanding the scalability and transferability of coaching programmes for school improvement.Originality/valueThe paper highlights shortcomings of existing representations for teacher coaching sessions and produces a novel representation that has value for researchers.

Mathematics teacher coaching is a promising but largely overlooked form of professional development (PD) for supporting mathematics teachers’ learning of justice-oriented teaching. In this article, we critically review the literature to illuminate what we currently know about mathematics teacher coaching and to highlight studies’ contributions and limitations to inform future work. Broadly, we find that four programs of research have developed, investigating: (a) coaches’ activities and relationships, (b) the effects of coaching on student assessment scores, (c) the effects of coaching on teachers’ practices or behaviors, and (d) the effects of coaching on teachers’ knowledge or beliefs. From this analysis, we argue that justice-oriented perspectives of teaching, in tandem with sociocultural theories of teachers’ learning, could allow for more nuanced investigations of coaching and could support design of learning experiences for teachers that bring us closer to educational justice.

ABSTRACT Handcrafts contribute significantly to sustainable socioeconomic development and poverty alleviation in local communities, by creating substantial employment and income opportunities for people. The aim was to investigate the effect of kindergarten teacher coaching on handicraft skills to improve implemented technical products. Participants were 20 unemployed female kindergarten teachers. They aged from 22-29 years old (M= 25 years, SD= 3.52). This study utilised a Quasi-Experimental (Pre-Test and Post-Test), one group design. Data were collected from children during the academic year 2019-2020. Data were analysed using t-test, ANOVA test, and Eta Squared. The group participated in 10 workshops, in which they were trained in doing textile design printing, forming ceramic pastes and synthesis with environmental materials. The results show there is a significant difference between the group’s performance before and after the program. This confirms that the handicrafts could positively impact kindergarten teachers’ textile design printing, forming ceramic pastes and synthesis with environmental materials. At the end of the study, recommendations were provided.

Improving the quality of education can be started by improving the quality of teachers in teaching and professional behavior. Teacher upgrading and training is one form of the effort. The teacher coaching model to achieve the quality of learning in school is Lesson Study. Lesson Study is a "model of professional educator development through collaborative and sustainable learning learning based on the principles of collegality and mutual learning to build learning communities". The in-on-in training of lesson study implementation for madrasah ibtidaiyah teachers in the ministry of religion is an effort to improve the professionalism of madrasah teachers in managing learning. The training participants consisted of 30 madrasah ibtidaiyah teachers formed in 6 (six) groups according to grade level to carry out lesson study activities, among others: planning (plan), implement (do), and reflect (see). The final conclusion of the training participants increased their understanding of lesson study as an effort to improve the quality of learning.

Young children with intensive behavioral needs are often served by paraprofessionals, who are typically among the least trained and least supported staff in the school. While professional development opportunities to address challenging behavior are generally limited for special education teachers, such professional growth opportunities are often completely unavailable for paraprofessionals. The purpose of this study was to evaluate a program in which teachers served as coaches for paraprofessionals. Using a multiple-baseline design across paraprofessional-and-child dyads, we evaluated the effects of the teachers-as-coaches program on paraprofessional implementation fidelity and child engagement in challenging behavior and appropriate communication. The results showed that with teacher coaching, paraprofessionals increased their behavior intervention implementation fidelity to 100%. During the maintenance probes, two of the paraprofessionals implemented the intervention with 100% fidelity, and the third paraprofessional implemented the intervention with higher fidelity than baseline. Results also showed corresponding decreases in child challenging behavior and increases in appropriate communication. Implications for research and practice in supporting paraprofessionals are discussed.
