Leaf chicory (Cichorium intybus L.) is a nutritionally rich vegetable used in regional cuisine in Brazil. Plants of C. intybus displaying symptoms (viz. chlorotic and necrotic ringspots, mosaic, and leaf deformation) similar to that induced by orthotospoviruses (genus Orthotospovirus, family Tospoviridae) were observed in three fields (≈ 0.2 ha each) in Gama County, in the Federal District, Brazil, from September 2016 to January 2020 in plants of the cultivars ‘Folha-Larga’ and ‘Spadona’ (Fig. 1). Incidence of symptomatic plants was nearly 10% in each field. Transmission electron microscopic examination of thin sections from symptomatic leaf samples showed typical membrane-bounded orthotospovirus particles within cisternae of spongy parenchymal cells (Fig 2). Two individual leaf samples per field were collected and submitted to dot enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay with polyclonal antisera against N protein of tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV), groundnut ringspot virus (GRSV) and tomato chlorotic spot virus (TCSV). Symptomatic samples strongly reacted only against GRSV antibodies. Total RNA was extracted (Trizol®, Sigma) from all six samples and used as template in RT-PCR assays. The primer J13 (5’-CCCGGATCCAGAGCAAT-3’) was employed for cDNA synthesis using M-MLV reverse transcriptase. PCR assays were done with the primer pair BR60/BR65 (Eiras et al., 2001) to obtain ≈ 500 bp fragment of untranslated region and partial N gene in the S RNA segment from each sample. Purified RT-PCR products of two randomly selected individual samples were directly sequenced (GenBank MW467981 and MZ126602) and their BLASTn analyses displayed 99 to 100% nucleotide identity to GRSV isolates previously reported infecting C. endivia L. in Brazil (Jorge et al., 2021). Our analyses combining N protein serology and N-gene sequencing (both directed to the S RNA segment) allowed us to confirm the GRSV infection of C. intybus, but the potential reassortant nature of these isolates (Webster et al., 2015; Silva et al., 2019) are unknown since their M RNA segments were not characterized. Individual leaf extracts (in phosphate buffer, pH 7.0) of the sequenced isolates were mechanically inoculated onto ten seedlings of two C. intybus cultivars (‘Folha Larga’ and ‘Pão-de-Açúcar’) and three plants each of the indicator hosts Capsicum chinense PI 159236, Nicandra physalodes; Nicotiana rustica; Datura stramonium; and tomato cv. Santa Clara. Systemic chlorotic and necrotic ringspots, mosaic, and leaf deformation developed in the indicator hosts and infection by GRSV was confirmed via serological assays 20 days after inoculation. However, no symptoms and no serological reaction to GRSV antibodies were observed on the C. intybus cultivars even after two successive mechanical inoculations. This transmission failure might be due to factors such as the requirement of the thrips vector(s), physicochemical barriers in the foliage or the presence of non-mechanically transmissible helper agent(s) necessary to ensure GRSV infection of C. intybus. The natural infection of C. intybus by a not fully characterized orthotospovirus (mostly likely TSWV) has been observed since 1938 in Brazil (Kitajima, 2020). Our report of GRSV infecting C. intybus is thus confirming previous speculations that similar symptoms in this vegetable crop were induced by orthotospovirus infection in Brazil. In Faceted Search Systems (FSS), users navigate the information space through facets, which are attributes or meta-data that describe the underlying content of the collection. Type-based facets (aka t-facets) help explore the categories associated with the searched objects in structured information space. This work investigates how personalizing t-facet ranking can minimize user effort to reach the intended search target. We propose a lightweight personalisation method based on Vector Space Model (VSM) for ranking the t-facet hierarchy in two steps. The first step scores each individual leaf-node t-facet by computing the similarity between the t-facet BERT embedding and the user profile vector. In this model, the user’s profile is expressed in a category space through vectors that capture the users’ past preferences. In the second step, this score is used to re-order and select the sub-tree to present to the user. The final ranked tree reflects the t-facet relevance both to the query and the user profile. Through the use of embeddings, the proposed method effectively handles unseen facets without adding extra processing to the FSS. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is measured by the user effort required to retrieve the sought item when using the ranked facets. The approach outperformed existing personalization baselines.

Published work indicates that high percentage of blue light can enhance pigment levels but decreases growth, while addition of far-red light to growth light can increase quantum efficiency and photosynthesis in leafy greens. Combining high-energy blue light with low-energy far-red light may increase both vegetative growth and pigment levels. However, the effect of high-energy blue and low-energy far-red light on the vegetative growth and pigments synthesis is unclear. This information can be potentially useful for enhancing the levels of pigments with nutritional value (e.g., beta-carotene and anthocyanins) in the produce grown in vertical farms. We grew romaine lettuce (cv. Amadeus) under similar light intensity (approximately 130 μmol⋅m–2⋅s–1) but different proportions of red: blue: far-red including 90:10: 0 (“High-R”), 50: 50: 0 (“High-B”), and 42: 42: 16 (“High-B+FR”) for 31 days. Results indicated that canopy area and leaf photosynthetic rate of lettuce plants was reduced in the High-B, thereby reducing plant growth. We did not observe photosynthesis enhancement in the High-B+FR. Instead, plants clearly showed photomorphogenic effects. The phytochrome photostationary state (PSS) decreased with far-red addition, resulting in reduced leaf number per plant. This was likely to shift the allocation of resources toward elongation growth for shade avoidance. Further, we observed an increase in the area of individual leaves, canopy area, and shoot dry weight in the High-B+FR. However, these appear to be an indirect consequence of decreased leaf number per plant. Our results also indicate that changes in expansion growth at individual leaf scale largely regulated pigment concentration in plants. As individual leaf area became smaller (e.g., High-B) or larger (e.g., High-B+FR), the levels of pigments including chlorophylls and beta-carotene increased or decreased, respectively. Area of individual leaves also positively influenced canopy area (and likely light interception) and shoots dry weight (or vegetative growth). Our study provides additional insights into the effects of high-energy blue and low-energy far-red light on individual leaf number and leaf growth, which appear to control plant growth and pigment levels in lettuce.

Introduction: The feeding habitats of land snails are essential for their survival. Some are little known, for example the upper surface of leaves, habitat of tropical arboreal and shrub snails. Objective: To analyze the feeding behavior and preferences in the feeding habitat of the tropical snail Tikoconus costarricanus. Methods: In a humid montane tropical forest in Cartago, Costa Rica, I recorded every 3 to 4 hours the feeding activity and general behavior of individually marked snails on a 2km trail (seven 24-hour visits in May 2010-March 2011). Results: I observed a total of 167 individual specimens and made 781 observations about their behavior and the leaves on which they were found. These snails preferred monocotyledonous leaves with many epiphylls, despite the fact that those leaves were not common in this forest. They avoided ferns, and during the less rainy season, they preferred leaves with many trichomes, although there were few such leaves. On average, they spent 11 hours on each individual leaf and visited two leaves per day. The few snails seen on stems were almost always moving, as opposed to those on the leaf underside. On average they moved a net 65 cm each day. Feeding concentrated around 9:00 am and defecation around 4:20 am. Conclusions: These snails prefer leaves with many epiphylls, where they find good camouflage, moisture and food. The preference for trichomes could be due to mechanical reasons. The lack of seasonality in their behavior may reflect their stable food source in a forest that remains humid year round.

According to the results of the investigations, carried out in 2017–2020 in the green spaces of cities in Belarus, the damage caused by larvae of Phytomyza agromyzina Meigen, 1830 to Siberian dogwood (Cornus alba L.) and blood twig dogwood (Cornus sanguinea (L.) Opiz), based on determining the relative area of damaged leaf surface, was assessed. The values of this parameter for individual leaf blades varied in the range from 0.86 to 63.58 %, while the average for the samples did not exceed 24.47 %. The total area of Ph. agromyzina mines on individual Cornus leaf blades ranged from 0.23 to 3.65 cm2. Using the nonparametric Mann–Whitney and Kolmogorov–Smirnov tests, the differences in medians and the integral differences between the samples were estimated. These values were not statistically significant when comparing data for Minsk and Vitebsk, and different years for both C. alba and C. sanguinea. However, in the values of the relative area of the damaged surface between the samples of both Cornus species the differences were statistically significant (p <0.05).
