One Facet of Ethnic Categorization, Ethnicization and Ethnic Activism in Nepal

Ethnicity and identity. particularly for Nepal with diverse human and cultural groups, has become more important in the context of number of ethnic upsurges accompanying macro-level social movements in Nepal, resulting in a radical transformation in the political system. Given the context, this paper aimed to reflect one of the many dimensions of ethnic activism in historical context focused on one of Nepal's least studied ethnic groups, the Paharis. Further, the paper also attempted to connect the categorization of human groups with the politics of identity. The paper is prepared by extensive reviews supplemented by a number of in-depth interviews among the given community around Kathmandu, Lalitpur, Kabhrepalanchok, and Sindhupalchok district. The paper concludes that Pahari ethnicity and activism have their own trajectory within the broader ethnic movement and activism that became apparent after 1990, followed by the movement initiated by other ethnic groups.

СУЧАСНІ МЕТОДИ ТА ЗАСОБИ ОПТИМІЗАЦІЇ ПРОФЕСІЙНОЇ САМОІДЕНТИЧНОСТІ МАЙБУТНЬОГО ПСИХОЛОГА

Статтю присвячено аналізу результатів апробації засобів ефективного становлення професійної самоідентичності майбутніх психологів та її складників, перш за все через активізацію процесів особистісного саморозвитку, формування уявлень про себе як професіонала, розвиток когнітивного, емоційно-оцінного, мотиваційного та поведінкового компонентів професійної самоідентичності в цілому. Завдання формувального експерименту з оптимізації професійної самоідентичності психологів включало: 1) розроблення програми оптимізації професійної самоідентичності для майбутніх психологів; 2) приведення неадекватно завищеного рівня самооцінки досліджуваних студентів-психологів під час навчально-професійної підготовки у адекватний стан за допомогою використання програми оптимізації; 3) зниження рівня тривожності та негативно-емоційного переживання майбутніх психологів під час навчання за допомогою програми; 4) підняття рівня пізнавальної активності майбутніх психологів під час навчання за допомогою програми. Розроблена тренінгова програма оптимізації становлення професійної самоідентичності майбутніх психологів. Вона містила такі активні соціально-психологічні методи: дискусії, рольові ігри, психогімнастичні прийоми, тренінги з домашніми завданнями, методами індивідуальної самостійної роботи. Мета тренінгової програми: коригування рівнів розвитку психолого-педагогічних складових майбутніх психологів у ході становлення їхньої професійної самоідентичності. Завдання тренінгової програми: 1) опанування студентами-психологами знань про професійну самоідентичність, що необхідна для їх ефективної майбутньої діяльності; 2) ознайомлення майбутніх психологів із методами та прийомами діагностики психологічних характеристик особистості, які впливають на становлення професійної самоідентичності; 3) оволодіння вміннями та навичками виконання конкретних професійних завдань, які виникають у процесі здійснення майбутньої діяльності, використовуючи для цього власні професійно значущі якості. Перший модуль був спрямований на підвищення пізнавальної активності майбутніх психологів, другий – на корекцію їхньої самооцінки, а третій – на корекцію їх емоційного стану. Для визначення ефективності програми оптимізації процесу професійної самоідентичності майбутніх психологів, нами було здійснено порівняльний аналіз рівнів розвитку особистісних складових у контрольній та експериментальній групах. The Politics of Identity and Regional Integration – Updating Global Perspectives

Regional integration (RI) is an essential part of the discourse on the global economy, viewed often as a “stumbling block” or “building block.” However, little research exists that connects RI in the context of a politics of identity (PoI), which can be used to describe the evolving tensions between national sentiment and regional economic cooperation. This paper performs a Web of Science and Google Scholar review of 136 articles to determine how RI is discussed in the context of PoI. Our review demonstrated that the conceptual frameworks normally used to think about PoI are underexpressed in the context of RI. We discuss why this is the case and identify themes to illustrate the connection. We then suggest conceptual frameworks to enhance the discussion of PoI as it relates to RI, particularly as it relates to the teaching of RI across learning groups.

Harvesting a participatory movement': Initial participatory action research with the Jewish Farmer Network

The Jewish Farmer Network (JFN) is a North American grassroots organization that mobilizes Jewish agricultural wisdom to build a more just and regenerative food system for all. This paper pre­sents methodological findings and reflections from the initial stages of a participatory action research (PAR) collaboration led by the authors and JFN organizers centered on Cultivating Culture, JFN’s inaugural conference in February 2020. For this early iterative phase, we used a PAR approach to guide event ethnography to both facilitate and understand collective movement building and action. This work included pre-conference collabo­rative research design, a participatory reflection and action workshop with roughly 90 participants, eval­uative surveys, short ethnographic interviews, and ongoing post-conference analysis with researchers and movement organizers. While this data was first analyzed and organized for JFN’s use, we present findings to demonstrate the effectiveness of fore­grounding event ethnography within a PAR re­search design at an early stage of movement for­mation, especially how elements of event ethnogra­phy can address some of the limitations of using PAR with a nascent network of farmers. Our work revealed themes in the movement of Jewish farm­ing: the politics of identity in movement building, the tensions around (de)politicization, and the production of Jewish agroecological knowledge. We reflect on the utility of using PAR to frame scholar-activism and propose future inquires for Jewish agrarianism.

The Politics of Identity in Greek Sicily and Southern Italy

This book offers the first sustained analysis of the politics of collective identity in Greek Sicily and southern Italy during the period c. 600–200 BCE. It advances two main arguments. First, the western Greeks constructed multiple identities, including a separate polis identity for each city-state, sub-Hellenic ethnicities such as Dorian and Ionian, regional identities, and an overarching sense of Greekness. The book untangles the many overlapping strands of these plural identities and analyzes how they relate to one another. Second, the book presents a compelling new account of the role of identity in Greek politics. Identity was often created through conflict and was reshaped as political conditions changed, it created legitimacy for kings and tyrants, and it contributed to the decision-making processes of poleis. A series of detailed case studies explores these points by drawing on a wide variety of source material, including historiography, epinician poetry, coinage, inscriptions, religious practices, and material culture. The wide-ranging analysis covers both Sicily and southern Italy, encompassing cities such as Syracuse, Camarina, Croton, and Metapontion; ethnic groups such as the Dorians and Achaeans; and tyrants and politicians from the Deinomenids to Hermocrates to Pyrrhus and Hieron II. Spanning the Archaic, Classical, and Hellenistic periods, this study is an essential contribution to the history, societies, cultures, and identities of the Greek West.

Shifting Identities in Thucydides’s Sicily

This chapter explores the politics of identity in the Sicilian theater of the Peloponnesian War. Initially, most poleis in Sicily formed alliances based on ethnicity (either Dorian or Ionian), a form of kinship diplomacy that was typical in Greek politics. Camarina, however, allied with the Ionians despite being Dorian due to its unique polis identity, which had been shaped by hostility toward its mother city, Syracuse. Political decisions were thus conditioned by identities, and these, in turn, were often shaped by political rhetoric. An analysis of two speeches of the Syracusan politician Hermocrates, as rewritten by Thucydides, reveals a series of arguments, based on different identities in different contexts, that persuaded poleis to follow his recommendations. Identity thus played a central role in Greek politics, since the changing salience of different identities enabled poleis to make decisions on the basis of multiple identities over a short time.

PLAYING AT THE POLLS: VIDEO GAMES IN/AS PLATFORMS OF POLITICAL PARTICIPATION

This panel explores the rise of ludic technologies as both figurative and computational “platforms” for American political participation. As COVID-19 forced many politicians to abandon massive rallies and other in-person engagement into 2020, American politicians turned to video games for alternative means of public outreach, from “Biden Island” in $2 to Twitch streams with Alexandria-Ocasio Cortez and Bernie Sanders. This panel contextualizes these and other “ludopolitical” phenomena from a variety of perspectives, ranging from digital media studies to queer studies and political economy. We attend to the mass re-politicization of games and question the politics of identity, content moderation, and labour that are downloaded onto policy when party communication becomes strategically playful.

Minor Acoustics

The essay explores sound as a dynamic medium for facilitating and enabling unique forms of relationality. Specifically, this leads to investigating how sound contributes to socially engaged and sited art work, affording involvement in radical forms of sharing and affinity. From nonhuman species to abandoned buildings, found matter to strange publics, practices of sound art often steer us towards experimental forms of relationality, where experiences of contact are elaborated beyond the strictly social. Such an auditory position may challenge and extend a politics of identity and community, shifting the dominant discourses of social recognition. Following such relational views, sound is underscored as a means for enriching the complexity of what it means to live together in this global environment.
