Abstract Background: Degree of caring behavior in oncology nurses is a crucial factor in caring for patients with cancer. It is important to understand factors related to oncology nurses' caring including their own resilience and professional quality of life. The purpose of this study was to investigate oncology nurses’ resilience, professional quality of life, and caring.Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive correlational study was conducted on 107 oncology nurses using self-report questionnaires. Data analysis included descriptive statistics, Pearson's correlations, and stepwise multiple regression to examine factors affecting oncology nurses’ degree of caring behavior, using SPSS/WIN 20.0 program (IBM).Result: Oncology nurses presented a low level of resilience and degree of caring behavior, a high level of compassion satisfaction, burnout, and secondary traumatic stress. There was a statistically significant relationship between degree of caring behavior, resilience (r = .43, p < .001), compassion satisfaction (r =.51, p < .001), and burnout (r = -.42, p < .001) as well as between secondary traumatic stress and burnout (r = .34, p < .001). Factors affecting oncology nurses’ degree of caring behavior were compassion satisfaction and education level. Conclusions: This study demonstrated that oncology nurses’ degree of caring behavior relates to professional quality of life, and education. This association suggests several implications for nursing practice to encourage holistic nursing. It will be necessary to study the factors affecting nurses' compassion satisfaction, and to try to promote compassion satisfaction according to the study.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to determine burnout and its related factors among nurses working at a tertiary hospital, who had experienced caring for patients with confirmed and suspected coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), including those with severe and critical conditions during the outbreak.Methods: Responses of 129 nurses, who worked in a tertiary hospital in Daegu, which was designated as a special control area for infectious disease in Korea, were analyzed. Data were collected from November 1, 2020 to December 14, 2020 using self-report questionnaires. Analysis was performed using t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficients, and stepwise multiple regression.Results: Burnout did not show any statistically significant differences in age, sex, marital status, total length of clinical experience, and the department at the time of caring for COVID-19 patients. Compassion fatigue, stress, depression, and anxiety were positively related with burnout, and compassion satisfaction was negatively related with burnout. In regression analysis, compassion satisfaction, compassion fatigue, and stress were confirmed as the predictive factors of burnout.Conclusion: The study results suggest that compassion satisfaction, compassion fatigue, and stress could play an important role in reducing burnout among tertiary hospital nurses during infectious disease outbreaks.

Background: Although several studies have recently described compassion satisfaction (CS), burnout (BO), and secondary traumatic stress (STS) in nurses, few to date have examined these issues across nursing specialties. Such examination is needed to inform future nursing-subspecialty tailored interventions. Aims: To examine (1) differences in CS, BO, and STS across nursing specialties and (2) differences associated with demographic, work-related, and behavioral factors among nurses. Method: A secondary analysis of survey responses from nurses ( N = 350) at an academic medical center. Demographic, behavioral, work-related, and professional quality of life variables were analyzed using hierarchical regression analyses. Results: CS, BO, and STS scores significantly varied across specialties with emergency nurses experiencing significantly elevated rates of BO and STS, and lowest rates of CS; scores were also differentially associated with demographic, work-related, behavioral, and workplace violence variables. Conclusions: Key differences in CS, BO, and STS by nursing specialty suggests the importance of tailoring BO and STS mitigative interventions. BO and STS risk factors should be assessed in nurses (e.g., behavioral health problems and poor sleep quality) and specialty-specific interventions (e.g., reducing workplace violence exposure in emergency settings) may be considered to improve CS while reducing BO and STS among nurses.

Aim: This study is focussed on comparison and assessment of compassion fatigue, burnout and compassion satisfaction among casualty nurses with intensive care unit (ICU) nurses. Study Design: Quantitative research approach and Descriptive - Comparative research design. Materials and Methods: Study targeted casualty nurses and ICU nurses working at selected hospitals in Vadodara. A total of 80 casualty nurses and ICU nurses were asked to participate in this study. Convenient sampling technique was used. First tool consists of demographic variables. Second tool consists of Compassion Fatigue/Satisfaction Self-Test (CFS), assess the existing level of compassion fatigue, burnout and compassion satisfaction. Results: Assessment of compassion fatigue among casualty nurses revealed that 18 [60%] nurses exhibited extremely high-risk level, Analysis of burnout among casualty nurses showed that 15 [50%] half of the nurses presented moderate risk level and among ICU nurses showed that 45 [90%] majority of the nurses presented high risk levels of burnout. Examining the final component of the CFS tool among casualty nurses, more than half of the respondents 16 [53.3%] were characterised as high potential level of compassion satisfaction and among ICU nurses, half of the respondents 25 [50%] were characterised as having a modest potential level of compassion satisfaction. Independent t-test shows that there was no significant difference in the level of compassion fatigue and compassion satisfaction between casualty nurses and ICU nurses. But there was a significant difference in the level of burnout between casualty nurses and ICU nurses, since the t value [18.256] was found to be greater than the table value [1.990] at .05 significant. Conclusion: Study reveals an association was found to exist between the level of compassion fatigue and demographic variables. But there was no association found in the level of burnout and compassion satisfaction among subjects with their selected demographic variables.

Background Compassion satisfaction and fear of compassion affect the mental health of professionals who work with people. In addition, each of these two variables can be important indicators of the quality of the services such professionals provide. Methods This study examines compassion as a source of satisfaction and fear among 293 professionals work with people, including 158 teachers, 57 police officers, 45 nurses and 44 imams. A personal information form, the Fear of Compassion Scale, and the Compassion Satisfaction Scale were used as data collection tools. Results Neither fear of compassion nor compassion satisfaction varied significantly according to the sampled professionals’ genders, educational levels, monthly incomes or area of residence. However, both these measures did exhibit statistically significant variation by the respondents’ professional roles, ages, numbers of children and marital statuses. A significant negative relationship between the participants’ fear of compassion and their compassion satisfaction was also identified. Conclusion Courses related to kindness and social interaction should be provided in schools, to help the adults of the future.

Abstract Nursing assistants often experience high rates of turnover and burnout, which may lead to poor resident care outcomes and quality of life, as well as continued staff shortages and increased workload for nursing assistants. This study examined personality correlates of burnout and compassion satisfaction among 100 nursing assistants employed as nursing assistants in long-term care (LTC) and hospitals throughout the United States. Participants completed the Professional Quality of Life Scale 5 (ProQOL 5) and the Big Five Inventory – 2 Short (BFI-2-S). There was a significant positive correlation between compassion satisfaction and agreeableness, and extraversion, and between burnout and neuroticism. Additionally, there were significant negative correlations between compassion satisfaction and neuroticism, and between burnout and agreeableness, and extraversion. These results indicate which nursing assistants may be more likely to experience burnout and may be at an increased risk of turnover. Specific interventions may be developed for such individuals to increase compassion satisfaction, reduce burnout, and reduce staff turnover. Furthermore, information regarding personality types of individuals at greater or lesser risk for burnout may be helpful for LTC administrators in the recruitment and hiring of nursing assistants, and thus may reduce rates of turnover. Resident care outcomes may also improve as nursing assistant hiring efforts are focused more on individuals who are less likely to experience burnout. Future researchers might investigate potential risk and protective factors for burnout and compassion satisfaction in nursing assistants.

Abstract The COVID-19 pandemic has greatly exacerbated the stress and burden of those employed in long-term care (LTC) facilities due to staff shortages, increased risks on the job, and ever-changing COVID-19 protocol requirements. This study examines potential differences in pre-COVID-19 and current COVID-19 LTC facility employed nursing assistants on burnout, compassion satisfaction, job satisfaction, and intent to quit. The sample included 81 nursing assistants employed in LTC facilities across the United States, with data collected prior to (n= 42) and during COVID-19 related shutdowns (n= 39). Participants completed the Professional Quality of Life Scale 5 (ProQOL 5), a single-item self-report measure of job satisfaction, and a two-item self-report measure of intent to quit their current employment. Nursing assistants during COVID-19 reported a higher level of burnout and lower level of compassion satisfaction than nursing assistants Pre-COVID-19. However, there were no differences in job satisfaction or intent to quit. The results suggest there may be additional factors that influence an individual’s decision to remain employed above and beyond the impacts of burnout and compassion satisfaction that may be unique to the caring professions. Future research might investigate factors that influence an individual’s decision to remain employed as a nursing assistant during periods of increased stress and burnout. Additionally, the impact of COVID-19 related stress added to the already high levels of stress and burnout on nursing assistants calls for further attention and research devoted to psychological support of LTC staff during crisis and normal times.
