By molecular-beam epitaxy we have grown epitaxial layers of GaAs1-xBix solid solutions with a bismuth content of 0 < x < 0.02. Structural and optical properties of the layers were investigated. We determine the influence of the bismuth flux and substrate temperature on the bismuth incorporation into the growing layers.

Abstract This work is devoted to the study of new bioindifferent photocatalysts that use the energy of solar radiation to purify water from organic pollutants. Photocatalytic materials were obtained by a previously developed low-temperature pyrolytic synthesis. Varying the bismuth content in the percursor mixture within 15-30 %, allows controlling the phase formation of the bismuth and strontium silicate phases. The samples obtained at 25 % bismuth in the precursor mixture (in terms of Bi2O3 %, wt.) show the highest photocatalytic activity with Bi12SiO2, Bi4Si3O12 formed in the catalyst composition. Photocatalytic activity of coatings with the predominance of bismuth silicates is inferior to coatings with the predominance of strontium bismuthates, but their greater hydrolytic stability is observed.

The effects of bismuth content on the microstructure, shear strength and thermal properties of Sn-0.7Cu-0.05Ni solder joints were investigated. Adding 2 wt% elemental Bi to Sn-0.7Cu-0.05Ni solder joints reduced peak temperature by about 6.7 °C, increased pasty range by 4.2 °C and raised undercooling by 3.1 °C. The microstructure of the interfacial layer between solder and Cu substrate was composed of (Cu,Ni)6Sn5 and (Cu,Ni)3Sn intermetallic compounds (IMCs). The solder joint included a phase of SnBi and Cu6Sn5 IMCs. The addition of elemental Bi increased shear strength and suppressed the growth of IMCs in the interfacial layer of the solder joints.
