Abstract Abrus precatorius is a widely distributed tropical medicinal plant with several therapeutic properties, however its seed extract has not been studied against cervical cancer (CaCx) till date. Herein, we have assessed the antioxidant and antiproliferative properties of A. precatorius seed extracts (ethyl acetate and 70% ethanol) prepared from different extraction methods (Soxhlet and maceration) against human cervix carcinoma cells (Hep2C). We observed a significantly higher total flavonoid content of APE (sox) i.e.,112.7±0.127 mg Quercetin Equivalent/g of extract than others; total phenolic content of APA (mac) seed extract was higher i.e.,108.53±0.089 mg Quercetin Equivalent/g of extract and total tannin content of APA (sox) was higher i.e., 98.98± 0.011 mg tannic acid equivalents/g of extract. In addition, tannic acid, rutin and piperine were identified in extracts by HPLC. Furthermore, APA (sox) exhibited the highest radical scavenging activity with an IC50 value of 14.49±0.93µg/ml. APE (mac) showed the most significant antiproliferative activity with IC50 value of 85.90±0.93µg/mL against Hep2c cells. SOD and GST activity was observed as highest in the APA(Mac) extract whereas the catalase activity and GSH content was maximum in the APE(Mac) extract. Further, the MDA content was observed to be the least in APE(Mac) extracts. Docking results suggested maximum binding energy between tannic acid and Her2 receptor compared to doxorubicin (standard). This study provides evidence that A. precatorius seed extracts possess promising bioactive compounds with probable anticancer and antioxidant properties against CaCx which might be utilized as a possible herbal remedy aimed at restricting tumor growth.

A new variety Abrus precatorius L. var. albo-spermum Hassan, Rahman et Afroz, var. nov. is described and illustrated from Bangladesh. The new variety is closest to Abrus preactorius L., but differs by its white coloured oval shaped seeds, short gynoecium which is half the length of longer filaments and with a short style. Aim: This study was aimed to investigate the cytotoxic effect of ethanol extract of Abrus precatorius. leaves on Raw 264.7 and SK-N-SH cell lines. Methodology: Soxhlet extraction was carried out using absolute alcohol and subsequently, the profiling of phytoconstituents of ethanol extract was performed by LC-MS analysis. Results: The results showed that the presence of anthocyanin, phenolic acid, carboxylic acid, amino acid and monoester in ethanol extract of Abrus precatorius. The phytoconstituents such as picolinic acid, N-Acetyl-DL-tryptophan, 3-Hydroxybenzoic acid, kuromanin, aflatoxin G2, monobutyl Phthalate, laurolactam, 4-Dodecylbenzenesulfonic acid, 4-Methoxycinnamic acid, caffeic acid and octyl decyl phthalate were found  in ethanol extract. In addition to this, the cytotoxic effect of the ethanol extract was tested on Raw 264.7 and SK-N-SH cell lines using MTT assay. The cytotoxic study revealed that the ethanol extract of Abrus precatorius was non-toxic to Raw 264.7 cell, but it showed a toxic effect on human neuroblastoma cell line, SK-N-SH. Conclusion: In this study, it was observed that the ethanol extract of Abrus precatorius was non-toxic to Raw 264.7 cell line, but it exhibited strong inhibition on the viability of SK-N-SH cell line.

The present study aims to find out the suitable native plant species for restoring degraded land in the mountain from 450 m asl to 819 m asl in Khurkot of Manthali. Altogether thirty quadrats were laid to observe frequency, density and coverage of plant species present there, and ultimately, IVI was calculated. Eight plant species – 3 trees like Acacia catechu, Aegle marmelos and Annona squamosa; 3  shrubs like Rhus parviflora, Cipadessa baccifera and Abrus precatorius (woody climber), and 2 herbs like Uraria lagopodiodes and  Polypogon monospeliensis were considered for the detailed study based on their high IVI values. Altogether fourteen traits (growth  form, life-span, phenology, Raunkiaer’s life-form, canopy height, stem density, mean ramet distance, leaf size, specific leaf area, leaf  thickness, seed mass, propagules mass, seed shape and nitrogen fixation) were studied in those eight species. Based on these traits,  through this protocol, the plants were again categorized into five syndromes, i.e., establishment syndrome, dispersal syndrome,  biomass producing syndrome, persistence syndrome and effect on environment syndrome. From this study, Annona squamosa and  Abrus precatorius can be suggested as candidate species for early succession. Similarly, Aegle marmelos, Acacia catechu, Annona  squamosa, Rhus parviflora and Abrus precatorius can be recommended to plant for restoration of degraded bushy lands, which are in  the phase of secondary succession.

Antioxidant substances are an important part of human life as it plays a key role in nutraceuticals and also help to defend free radicals present in our body. The present study highlights the need to find potent natural antioxidants from medicinal plants. Different extracts of Abrus precatorius L. (Fabaceae) and Asystasia gangetica (L.) T. Anderson (Acanthaceae) were successively prepared using petroleum ether, benzene, chloroform, and ethanol. It was evaluated for antioxidant activities using various assays. Maximum extractable total phenolics and flavonoids were recorded in varied extracts of A. precatorius and A. gangetica. The extracts also showed efficient phosphomolybdenum reduction, reducing power activity, nitric oxide, and hydrogen peroxide radical scavenging properties. It is very clear from the results that the studied plants A. precatorius and A. gangetica have remarkable medicinal uses with extraordinary potential for pharmaceuticals. Further detailed studies will pave the way to promote natural drugs for health benefits.

Aims: The aim of present study to evaluate the antioxidant potential of Abrus precatorius Linn leaves ethanol extract containing bioactive compounds on free radical scavenger using DPPH. Ethanol extract of Abrus precatorius Linn leaves was subjected to preliminary phytochemical screening and fraction of extract was detected by Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry analysis. Methodology and Results: GC-MS analysis of ethanol leaves extract was carried out on Shimadzu GC-MS model number QP 2010S and revealed the presence of 18 phytochemical compounds, with mome inositol as a dominant component. Antioxidant potential of leaves ethanol extract was evaluated using DPPH free radical scavenging assay at five different doses as 5, 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50 μg/mL and showed significant DPPH free radical scavenging potential with the IC50 value of 33.37 μg/mL. The bioautography of extract showed that fractions with the most prominent antioxidant potential tended to contain secondary metabolites reported in preliminary phytochemical screening such as alkaloids, carbohydrates, protein and amino acids, glycoside, tannins, flavonoids, triterpenoids and phenolic compounds. The results evaluate and justify the traditional relevance of Abrus precatorius Linn leaves ethanol extract for free radical scavenging potential as a antioxidant and can be used as a lead for the isolation of the antioxidant bioactive chemical constituents in further study. Conclusion: Preliminary phytochemical screening reported various bioactive compounds in the ethanol extract of Abrus precatorius Linn leaves and identified by GC-MS. The extract exhibited greater free radical scavenging activity i.e. antioxidant potential. The presence of various bioactive phytocompounds justifies the therapeutic use of the Abrus precatorius Linn plant leaves for various ailments by traditional practitioners.
