<div>Large scale water pumps with bell mouth intakes have been broadly used by municipal wastewater services to move sewage to wastewater treatment plants. Swirling of the flow when entering the suction bell of the pump intake can cause free-surface and/or sub-surface vortices, resulting in poor pump operation. In order to properly design, the wet well of sewage pump station both physical and numerical models are used to analyze the flow condition entering the pump intake and the associated flow pattern and potential vortex formation. In cooperation with WSP Canada Ltd., a physical modelling study of the First Narrows Sewage Pumping Station was conducted by the Ryerson research team at Ryerson University’s Centre of Urban Innovation Laboratory. During the physical model testing, uneven flow distributions including vortices were observed at the intake chamber under three pump-working conditions. To achieve an even flow distribution with minimal vortices, alternative slot designs at the entrance of the chamber were analyzed.</div><div>Additionally, a tapered design of the suction bell intake was tested for potential vortex formation. The results showed that a reduced area of the entrance slot could distribute the inflow evenly in the chamber. Moreover, no vortex formation around the tapered suction bell was found under (a) a low flow condition of 10 l/s at a water level -5.10 m below datum and (b) a cleaning cycle scenario of 16 l/s at a water level -4.9 m below the datum. However, there was observed water rotations at the backwall side. For tight and intense water rotations, it might cause vortex formation. This study has provided design changes that can smooth the flow and reduce vortices at the bell mouth intakes of the pump intake chamber.</div>

Ambient conditions greatly affect the combustion turbine performance. The Absorption Refrigeration Cycle Turbine Inlet Chilling (ARCTIC) system can chill the inlet air of the turbine to maintain optimum performance at all ambient temperatures. However, turbine characteristics, bell-mouth icing concerns, economics and performance guarantees require maintaining the inlet air temperature within a narrow range throughout the year. These considerations require strict control of the Turbine Inlet Air Chilling (TIAC) coil performance over a wide range of operating conditions. This paper describes the field performance and control of the chilling coil for a Mars 100 turbine. The controls logic had been developed from previously published empirical model of the chilling coil and model of the chilling loop performance at the various ambient conditions. Since commissioning at the end of summer 2020, the ARCTIC has provided inlet air chilling over a range of ambient conditions. Typically, the inlet air is maintained at 7.2∘C (45∘F) by controlling the TIAC chilled water flow rate and temperature. On cooler days, if the inlet air temperature drops to 5.6∘C (42∘F) the chilled water pump turns OFF automatically to prevent bell-mouth icing. Thus, the chiller accommodates chilling load variations down to zero load. On colder days, the ARCTIC continues operating till the ambient temperature drops below 1.7∘C (35∘F) and then turns OFF. The chiller turns back ON when the 8 h average inlet air temperature exceeds 10∘C (50∘F). These parameters can be adjusted remotely by the operator and help maintain performance guarantees while minimizing chiller cycling. Quasi-steady state data were analyzed to quantify the chilling load and coil performance over a range of operating conditions.

Pumping stations are important regulation facilities in a water distribution system. Intake structures can generally have a great influence on the operational state of the pumping station. To analyze the effects of the bell mouth height of the two-way intake on the performance characteristics and the pressure pulsations of a two-way pumping station, the laboratory-sized model pump units with three different intakes were experimentally investigated. To facilitate parameterized control, ellipse and straight lines were used to construct the profile of the bell mouth. The frequency domain and time-frequency domain of the pressure pulsations on the wall of intakes were analyzed by the Welch’s power spectral density estimate and the continuous wavelet transform (CWT) methods, respectively. The results showed that the bell mouth height (H) has significant influences on the uniformity of the impeller inflow and the operation stability of the pump unit. When H = 204 mm, the data fluctuated greatly throughout the test process and the performance curves are slightly lower than the other two schemes. As the bell mouth height gradually decreases, the average pressure difference of each measuring point began to decrease, more homogeneous velocity distribution of impeller inflow can be ensured. The amplitude of blade passing frequency is obvious in the spectrum. While when (H) is more than 164 mm, the main frequency of pressure pulsations at three points fluctuates with the rotation of the impeller. When H decreases to 142 mm, pressure pulsations will be independent of the operating conditions and positions which contributes to the long-term stable operation of the pump unit.

This article examines the effect of couple stress lubricant on the characteristics of six-pocket hybrid irregular journal bearing system. Various shapes of irregular journals viz. barrel, bell-mouth, and undulated journal are considered in the analysis. To model the behavior of the flow of couple stress lubricant in bearing clearance space, the modified form of Reynolds equation is derived by using Stokes theory. The unknown pressure field in Reynolds equation is determined by using Galerkin's method. To illustrate the effect of couple stress lubricant on bearing system, the results for characteristics parameters of journal bearing system are presented. The results noticeably reveal that the presence of different geometrical irregularities in journal may ominously influence the performance of bearing system. Further, the use of couple stress lubricant instead of Newtonian lubricant offers a significant improvement in the value of bearing characteristic parameters of geometrically irregular hybrid journal bearing system viz. [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text].
