AbstractIf a decision tree is constructed through a series of locally optimal solutions, such as the Greedy method, overfitting to the data is likely to occur. In order to avoid overfitting, many previous research have attempted to collectively optimize the structure of a decision tree by using evolutionary computation. However, if attributes of each split and their thresholds are searched simultaneously, the evaluation function becomes intermittent; thus, optimization methods assuming continuous distribution cannot be used. In this study, in order to enable efficient search assuming continuous distribution even for complicated data that contains a lot of noise and extraordinary values, such as financial time series data, the inner level search that optimizes each threshold value collectively given a specific attribute for each split in a model tree and the outer level search that optimizes the attributes of each split were performed by separate evolutionary computing. As a result, we obtained high prediction accuracy that far exceeded the performance of the conventional method.

The consumers’ preferences and their reasons for vegetable consumption were examined with the aim to provide useful information to increase the consumption of these food items.  Consumers’ general viewpoints about vegetable consumption were examined using an online questionnaire. The study was conducted on a sample of 711 respondents chosen randomly and obtained data were analyzed by the correspondence analysis. Results suggest that consumers consider vegetables as tasty, easy to use and healthy for consumption. The main drawbacks for vegetable consumption are safety issues, short shelf-life and high price. In order to increase the consumption of these foodstuffs, each type of fresh and processed vegetable should have a specifically designed campaign, emphasizing its specific attribute. Obtained results might provide an insight into the current state of consumers’ behavior in Serbia and might be useful for creating specific promotional programs and more appropriate communication strategies aiming to increase consumers’ knowledge about the importance of regular vegetable consumption. They should raise consumers’ awareness by emphasizing the importance of adequate daily vegetable consumption. This, in turn, should improve public health and reduce the health and economic costs of massive chronic diseases caused by inadequate diet.

The Allocasuarina robusta pilot study investigated the process involved to facilitate seed recruitment as part of a threatened species project. Several experiments occurred, each examining a specific attribute in the seed recruitment process. A. robusta is a threatened species of national and local significance. The research design would help land managers and communities to conserve A. robusta. The investigation aimed to improve seed recruitment in A. robusta occurring under natural conditions. The experiment results highlighted several experimental design flaws and identified opportunities to increase community participation as part of the recovery program.

The present study is an attempt to investigate using the grammatical devices of cleft construction as a stylistic feature in the ‘city of Glass’ a post-modernist novel by Paul Auster. The purpose behind using cleft sentence is to highlight the element which is a part of the sentence and it is important for the author’s perspective. The construction of cleft sentence composes of a matrix clause headed by copula and relative or relative-like clause. Both (matrix and relative) reflect a simple logical proposal, That could’ve been conveyed in the consisting of a specific attribute without changing the truth circumstances. So this structure allows the writer focusing on the important element that he /she believes to reveal the creative use of language.

The amount of gelatin used worldwide in the food industry is increasing annually. Recovery of valuable components from fish processing-by products could help solve problems on tons of wastes produced each year and address religious beliefs like Islam and Judaism as well as the fear of mad cow disease. In this study, gelatin was extracted from milkfish scales for food application. The physical properties (yield, strength, color, clarity and pH) of extracted gelatin were studied and compared with commercially-available bovine gelatin. Marshmallows were developed from these gelatin sources. Sensory evaluation was done to determine the appropriateness of the level of a specific attribute and the consumer’s preference using the nine-point hedonic and just about right (JAR) scales. The extracted fish gelatin was comparable to bovine gelatin in terms of strength but they differ in terms of color, clarity and pH. The fish gelatin had a yield of 8.7%, high bloom value of 505g, white appearance and an acidic pH (5.25). The marshmallow developed from fish gelatin is comparable to bovine gelatin in all attributes (color, aroma, texture, taste, sweetness and aftertaste) except for sweetness. Overall, the gelatin extracted from milkfish scales can be used as an alternative to bovine gelatin for food application such as in marshmallow production.

In many graphs such as social networks, nodes have associated attributes representing their behavior. Predicting node attributes in such graphs is an important task with applications in many domains like recommendation systems, privacy preservation, and targeted advertisement. Attribute values can be predicted by treating each node as a data point described by attributes and employing classification/regression algorithms. However, in social networks, there is complex interdependence between node attributes and pairwise interaction. For instance, attributes of nodes are influenced by their neighbors (social influence), and neighborhoods (friendships) between nodes are established based on pairwise (dis)similarity between their attributes (social selection). In this article, we establish that information in network topology is extremely useful in determining node attributes. In particular, we use self- and cross-proclivity measures (quantitative measures of how much a node attribute depends on the same and other attributes of its neighbors) to predict node attributes. We propose a feature map to represent a node with respect to a specific attribute a , using all attributes of its h -hop neighbors. Different classifiers are then learned on these feature vectors to predict the value of attribute a . We perform extensive experimentation on 10 real-world datasets and show that the proposed method significantly outperforms known approaches in terms of prediction accuracy.

This paper examines the relationship between philosophy and its conditions. The affirmation “mathematics is ontology”, which I posited thirty years ago, has certain inconveniences. In this article, I present six varying possibilities for ontology. My own philosophical decision was to proclaim that being is a pure multiplicity, without the One and without any specific attribute such as “matter” or “spirit”. This movement of thought brought me to study the mathematical condition of philosophy and to search for a rigorous structuration of my speculative decision within the field of mathematics. However, my initial postulate that “Being is the multiplicity without the One” is not a mathematical but a philosophical statement. This paper concludes with a presentation of the relationship between mathematics and philosophy in Being and Event, Logics of Worlds, and The Immanence of Truths.
