In order to make HPI have a wide application prospect in the food industry, we used EGCG to modify HPI. In this study, we prepared different concentrations (1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 mM) of (−)-epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) covalently linked to HPI and use methods such as particle size analysis, circular dichroism (CD), and three-dimensional fluorescence spectroscopy to study the changes in the structure and functional properties of HPI after being covalently combined with EGCG. The particle size data indicated that the covalent HPI-EGCG complex was larger than native HPI, and the particle size was mainly distributed at about 200 μm. CD and three-dimensional fluorescence spectroscopy analyses showed that the conformation of the protein was changed by conjugation with EGCG. The β-sheet content decreased from 82.79% to 66.67% after EGCG bound to the protein, and the hydrophobic groups inside the protein were exposed, which increased the hydrophobicity of the protein and changed its conformation. After HPI and 1 mM of EGCG were covalently bonded, the solubility and emulsifying properties of the covalent complex were improved compared with native HPI. These results indicated that HPI-EGCG conjugates can be added in some foods.

AbstractSingle-particle inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (spICP-MS) is used increasingly to characterize element-containing nanoparticles (NPs) in various samples, providing data on the number, concentration, size of particles, as well as the dissolved element concentration. Because there are currently only three examples of spICP-MS analysis of NPs in hydrocarbons in the literature. There is a clear need for hydrocarbon-based NP reference materials (RMs), available for analysts to develop and validate new methods. Here, an analysis of spICP-MS data is presented for two custom-developed gold NP RMs in toluene. The particle size data obtained by spICP-MS is compared with the total particle diameter obtained by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and shows the excellent agreement among both techniques. Abstract Purpose This work details experimental observations on the effect of liquid flow percolating through packed beds of crystals to elucidate how the filtration pressure severely alters the size distribution and crystal shape. Pressure filtration is widely used in the pharmaceutical industry, and frequently results in undesired size distribution changes that hinder further processing. Methods The percolation methodology presented fixes fluid flow through a bed of crystals, resulting in a pressure over the bed. X-ray computed tomography (XCT) provided detailed observations of the bed structure. Detailed 2D particle size data was obtained using automated microscopy and was analysed using an in-house developed tool. Results Crystal breakage is observed when the applied pressure exceeds a critical pressure: 0.5–1 bar for ibuprofen, 1–2 bar for β-L glutamic acid (LGA) and 2–2.5 bar for para amino benzoic acid (PABA). X-ray computed tomography showed significant changes in bed density under the applied pressure. Size analysis and microscope observations showed two modes of breakage: (i) snapping of long crystals and (ii) shattering of crystals. Conclusion LGA and PABA have a similar breakage strength (50 MPa), ibuprofen is significantly weaker (9 MPa). Available breakage strength data may be correlated to the volumetric Gibbs free energy. Data from 12 and 35 mm bed diameters compares well to literature data in a 80 mm filter; the smaller, easy to operate percolation unit is a versatile tool to assess crystal breakage in filtration operations.

At the Barnes Site (40DV307) along the Cumberland River, two discrete shell-bearing deposits dating to the Late Archaic and Middle Woodland periods (approximately 3500 and 1800 cal BP respectively) are separated by a thick Early Woodland–period shell-free stratum dated between 2900 and 2000 cal BP. Alternating shell-bearing and shell-free deposits at sites elsewhere in the southern Ohio Valley have often been viewed as indicative of long-term changes in subsistence practices and traditions or large-scale environmental fluctuations affecting resource abundance. At Barnes, however, chronological, geoarchaeology, and paleoethnobotany data from shell-bearing strata recovered in 2010 and 2012 suggest that the two shell-bearing deposits mark the locations of shellfish processing at or near the river’s edge when the river channel was physically closer to the current site location. Particle-size data indicate that when the shell-free deposit accumulated, the site was situated in a low-energy depositional zone, suggesting that the river channel had shifted further to the west during that period of time.

ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of the root of vetiver grass (Chrysopogon zizanioides (L.) Robert) on the soil Resistance to penetration (RP) in the margins of the lower São Francisco River. Vetiver grass seedlings were planted on the riverbank margins in order to increase soil resistance to erosion processes, and RP assessments were made at soil depths of 0-0.20, 0.20-0.40, and 0.40-0.60 m in different situations (near the plants and within rows). RP data was obtained using an automated penetrometer. Gravimetric moisture data was also collected, as well as particle size data by densimetry, and root density data by the monolith method. The results of the RP, moisture, and root density studies were subjected to analysis of variance (p <0.05) and then the averages were compared by the Tukey test using SISVAR software. The samples next to the vetiver grass showed an average RP of 1793.94 kPa and an average moisture content of 11.78%, statistically differing from that of the sampled points within rows. RP and soil moisture did not differ statistically at the depth assessed. The vetiver grass produced an adequate ground cover, leading to higher water retention and hence a reduced resistance to penetration.

AbstractClearly defined distal tephras are rare in rockshelter sediment records. Crvena Stijena, a Palaeolithic site in Montenegro, contains one of the longest (> 20 m) rockshelter sediment records in Europe with deposits ranging in age from Middle Pleistocene to mid-Holocene. A distinctive tephra is clearly exposed within the well stratified record approximately 6.5 m below the present land surface. We present geochemical data to confirm that this tephra is a distal equivalent of the Campanian Ignimbrite deposits and a product of the largest Late Pleistocene eruption in Europe. Originating in the Campanian volcanic province of southwest Italy, this tephra has been independently dated to 39.3 ka. It is a highly significant chronostratigraphic marker for southern Europe. Macrostratigraphic and microstratigraphic observations, allied with detailed particle size data, show that the tephra layer is in a primary depositional context and was transported into the rockshelter by aeolian processes. This site is unique because the tephra forms an abrupt boundary between the Middle and Upper Palaeolithic records. Before they can be used as chronostratigraphic markers in rockshelter and cave-mouth environments, it is essential to establish the stratigraphic integrity of distal tephras and the mechanisms and pathways involved in their transport and deposition.
