In vascular plants, blue-light photoreceptors and cryptochromes contain a myriad of roles and functions to adapt to different ambient light conditions, while the roles of cryptochromes in bryophytes have been rarely reported. In this study, we investigated functions of a single-copy ortholog of cryptochrome (MpCRY) in the liverwort Marchantia polymorpha. Knock-out of MpCRY showed that a large number of the mutant plants exhibited asymmetric growth of thalli under blue light. Transcriptome analyses indicated that MpCRY is mainly involved in photosynthesis and sugar metabolism. Further physiological analysis showed that Mpcry mutant exhibited a reduction in CO2 uptake and sucrose metabolism. In addition, exogenous application of sucrose or glucose partially restored the symmetrical growth of the Mpcry mutant thalli. Together, these results suggest that MpCRY is involved in the symmetrical growth of thallus and the regulation of carbon fixation and sucrose metabolism in M. polymorpha.

Background: Congenital scoliosis is caused by anomalies of the vertebra, such as hemivertebra or unsegmented bar, which result in asymmetric growth of the spine. The disruption of vertebra development during embryogenesis may be accompanied by other congenital multi-organ anomalies. The progression of the scoliotic curve may also hinder the development of other organs.Current Concepts: Hemivertebra excision and short spinal fusion have demonstrated favorable outcomes. However, the need for spinal growth and lung development has led to new treatment modalities. Growth-friendly surgeries, such as with a growing rod or vertical expandable rib-based distraction device, have demonstrated good results with curve correction while maintaining spinal growth. Although the outcome of conservative treatment for congenital scoliosis is questionable, casting may be effective as a “time-buying strategy” to delay the need for surgery.Discussion and Conclusion: It is essential to decide on a treatment plan considering the progression of the curve and growth of the spine and lungs through an individualized approach.

Abstract Tree radial growth is characterized by not only the annual ring-width increment but also shifts in the tree-ring geometric center (TRGC) if subjected to asymmetric external forcing, such as prevailing winds. Previous dendrochronological studies have used the asymmetric growth derived from tree-ring widths to reconstruct wind speed changes. Here we propose a novel method use quantitative TRGC measurements to estimate wind speed. We investigated TRGC shifts in northeast China, where the prevailing westerly winds are strong and persistent. We found that the TRGC showed significant correlations (r = 0.64, p < 0.01) with wind speed in May-September. The higher tree geometry sensitivity to wind speed obtained with the new method compared to previous ones, suggests the possibility of reconstructing historical wind change and variability in prevailing winds using TRGC. In addition, by correcting tree-ring radius according to their TRGC shifts, the basal area increment (BAI) was calculated. Our new BAI estimation provided stronger correlations with climate than both the standard tree-ring width chronology and a traditional BAI estimation. We suggest that future dendrochronological studies should consider TRGC shifts to increase the accuracy in climate reconstructions.

Abstract Background Congenital scoliosis caused by failure of multiply vertebral segmentation with concave fused rib or unsegmented bar combined with contralateralhemivertebra is usually rigid and produces enormous asymmetric growth. Fusionless techniques have less advantage and come with some complications. Paucity of data was reported for children with complex congenital scoliosis using two-staged osteotomy surgery. Methods From 2006 to 2016, 11 patients less than 10 years old undergoing two staged osteotomy surgery for complex rigid congenital scoliosis were retrospectively reviewed. The analysis included age at initial surgery, second surgery and at the latest follow-up, and complications. Changes in coronal major curve, thoracic kyphosis, lumbar lodorsis, apex vertebra translation, T1-T12 length, T1-S1 length, trunk shift, and SVAwere included in radiological evaluation. Results In all, the mean follow-up was 72.5 ± 23.8 (42 to 112) months. The mean flexibility of the spine was 17.4 and 17.8 % before two surgeries. The mean age at the initial surgery was 6.6 ± 2.6 (2.5–10) years. The mean fusion level was 4.6 ± 1.3 (2 to 6) segments. The mean scoliosis improved from 67.4° to 23.7° after initial surgery and was 17.4° at the latest follow-up. The average increase of T1-S1 length was 0.92 cm per year. No patients had neurological complications. Conclusions Two-staged osteotomy surgery including hemivertebrae resection or Y-shaped osteotomy can achieve good radiological and clinical outcomes without severe complications. This procedure can be an option of treatment for complex congenital scoliosis.

Background: Hypertensive disorders are an important medical problem of gestation. Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) are a significant cause for maternal and fetal morbidity as well as mortality. Intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR) commonly describes the condition of fetus whose size or growth is subnormal. IUGR fetus is frequently described as symmetrical and asymmetrical IUGR in term of their body proportions. Asymmetric growth retardation is typically linked to uteroplacental inadequacy. Hypertension is one of the maternal causes of placental insufficiency. Aim: To compare head circumference and abdominal circumference ratio in normotensive and patients with pregnancy induced hypertensive disorders after 28 weeks of gestation. Methodology: A cross sectional analytical study was carried on 113 pregnant females in which 57 women were normotensive and 56 women were hypertensive. All individuals were scanned by two- dimensional ultrasound following 28 weeks of pregnancy to evaluate sonographic parameters HC and AC. The HC/AC ratio was estimated by dividing head circumference with abdominal circumference. Results: Out of 57 normotensive patients 27 (36.48%) fetuses were diagnosed with IUGR having HC/AC ratio more than 1, while 30 had normal HC/AC ratio. In 56 hypertensive patients 47(63.51%) fetuses were diagnosed with IUGR having HC/AC ratio greater than 1, however 9(23.07%) fetuses had HC/AC ratio within normal range. So out of total 113 patients, 74 fetuses were found with IUGR while 39 fetuses had HC/AC ratio within normal ranges. Our study found that a cut off value of ≥ 1.0974 for HC/AC ratio could be used as diagnostic parameter in predicting IUGR. Conclusion: HC/AC ratio is a useful parameter for the detection of IUGR. Since most plant movements take place through an interplay of elastic deformation and strengthening tissues, they are thus ideal concept generators for biomimetic hingeless actuators. In the framework of a biomimetic biology push process, we present the transfer of the functional movement principles of hollow tubular geometries that are surrounded by a net-like structure. Our plant models are the recent genera Ochroma (balsa) and Carica (papaya) as well as the fossil seed fern Lyginopteris oldhamia, which hold a net of macroscopic fiber structures enveloping the whole trunk. Asymmetries in these fiber nets, which are specifically caused by asymmetric growth of the secondary wood, enable the up-righting of inclined Ochroma and Carica stems. In a tubular net-like structure, the fiber angles play a crucial role in stress–strain relationships. When braided tubes are subjected to internal pressure, they become shorter and thicker if the fiber angle is greater than 54.7°. However, if the fiber angle is less than 54.7°, they become longer and thinner. In this article, we use straightforward functional demonstrators to show how insights into functional principles from living nature can be transferred into plant-inspired actuators with linear or asymmetric deformation.

AbstractA fetal scalp electrode (FSE) is a frequently used investigation during labor. However, it is an invasive procedure which can lead to complications. Our patient developed a very large brain abscess after initial superficial infection of the skin site due to an FSE. The patient was admitted to the hospital after an asymmetric growth of the skull was noticed with no further signs of clinical illness. MRI showed a very large brain abscess which was aspirated and treated with antibiotics for 10 weeks. A 2-year follow-up showed only a slight developmental delay in gross motor skills. Only once before a similar case has been described at which the patient developed a brain abscess after superficial infection of the scalp following an FSE. In both cases, the brain abscess was noticed due to an asymmetric growth of the skull without any further signs of clinical illness. A brain abscess has a high mortality and morbidity rate, and early diagnosis is vital for the optimal outcome. We therefore recommend to organize an out-patient clinical follow-up for every infant with a superficial infection of the skin site after placement of an FSE.
