This paper is focused on selected units of casemates with enhanced fortification in the military fortification complex of the Czech borderlands landscape as specific forms of brownfields. They represent a functional system that interacts with surrounding nature, landscape character, and human society. Four approaches were chosen to study the function and potential of selected individual abandoned casemates with enhanced fortification, where each of them corresponds to one of the four landscape layers: genius loci, socio-economic sphere, functional relationship (between human and the landscape), and natural conditions. There is a corresponding research method for each of the landscape layers (guided interview with respondents, data analysis on abandoned casemates with enhanced fortifications as brownfields, analysis of their landscape functions, and zoological survey of interior). The main results could show that abandoned casemates with enhanced fortifications can play important roles in all landscape layers: stories and genius loci, abandoned casemates with enhanced fortification as a special type of military brownfield but also as a semi-natural ecosystem, and the same time as a habitat for invertebrates. The analyses and surveys conducted clearly demonstrate that abandoned casemates with enhanced fortification as units of military fortification complex of the Czech borderlands landscape perform several hidden important functions in the landscape for which they cannot be viewed as brownfields. This hidden functional potential is most likely best described by the concept of hidden singularity, which offers itself for integration into basic approaches to brownfields.

Housing is one of the most essential components of life, offering shelter, protection, and comfort, as well as a place to rest. When considering the Sri Lankan housing complexes Millennium city housing complex was highlighted mainly because of the crime incidents that happened inside the housing complex. This research is done to demonstrate and to investigate the application of landscape architecture for security on urban housing complexes based on Millennium city housing complex, using landscape character to reduce outdoor insecurity. Seven places in the millennium city housing complex premises were selected to apply the crime prevention through environmental design theory and to observe its effectiveness through structured interviews and by considering the police reports that were taken through Sri Lanka police Athurugiriya. Natural surveillance, Territorial reinforcement, Maintenance, Prospect, Refuge, and Escape factors are separately discussed in the analysis regarding the selected places. A sectional survey is done for further analysis. The outcome shows that the house settings and the landscape character affect the outdoor landscape safety of the residents. The study will be a source to better understand how landscape architecture can be applied for outdoor security in urban housing complexes.

Abstract Karawang is the capital as well as the town center of Karawang Regency. As the capital and the town center, it requires public spaces with functional and aesthetic values that reflect and accommodate the town's social characteristics. As a city where most of the population is Muslim, it requires adequate space for worship and public space. The local government can develop the worship and public space from the existing Islamic Center in the township. Islamic Center Karawang is an Islamic Center that has long been built and is located in the township of Karawang. The Islamic Center Karawang consists of a collection of supporting buildings in various fields and the landscape itself. The landscape at the Islamic Center Karawang requires a good landscape design to accommodate visitors' needs and has a good aesthetic value. This study aims to identify the landscape's character at the Islamic Center Karawang, analyze the potential and constraints on the Islamic Center Karawang landscape, and design the landscape of the Islamic Center Karawang. The concept of Islamic garden is adopted from depicting the beauty of heaven in the Quran to a landscape character. The method used in this research is the method of field activities, which includes direct site surveys, interviews with stakeholders and visitors, and filling out questionnaires to visitors. This study's results are in concept diagrams, schematic designs, and Islamic Center Karawang designs. Concept diagrams include basic concepts, design concepts, and development concepts. The schematic design consists of a block plan and a phased scenario. The design output of the Islamic Center Karawang includes site plan, planting plan, section, detail, and design illustrations. The result is the design of a garden that can be enjoyed optimally by the five senses of humans. It can influence humans and definite sharia rules or boundaries regarding elements, characters, and activities in an Islamic garden.

Abstract The urban landscape, which is in a dynamic environment, continues to change, meaning it has transformed the relationship between humans and the environment. Many changes have occurred since the early formation of the city until now. Nevertheless, many heritage urban landscape that has been formed hundreds of years ago are continuing to date with their various elements remain the same. Jeron Beteng is a part of the Yogyakarta Sultanate Palace, which has existed since the early construction of the palace. This traditional area was once a residential area for the abdi dalem (people who served the Sultan and Palace) and the sultanate princes or brothers of the Sultan. Along with the developments of Yogyakarta, Jeron Beteng has developed into a dense urban settlement. Various changes have occurred, both the function of the area, architecture building, and land use. As a heritage area, it is interesting to know whether Jeron Beteng can adapt to the changes and continue as the cultural identity of the Yogyakarta Palace. This paper is based on research that intends to identify the urban landscape characters of Jeron Beteng and examine the continuity of its physical landscape characters as the cultural identity of the Yogyakarta Palace. A qualitative method is used with two approaches: interpretation of the history of Jeron Beteng and qualitative approach based on the contemporary empirical phenomenon. This research found that Jeron Beteng today is the culmination of hundreds of years of physical and social management. It is not just a collection of heritage buildings, events, and precincts, but the whole landscapes, that have unique characters. The character of Jeron Beteng is mostly formed by its physical elements that have heritage values, mainly the Palace, Alun-alun, and the beteng wall. Changes in the spatial and physical environment have happened, however, the essence or core of the physical landscape character of Jeron Beteng is continuing and contributes to the cultural identity of the Yogyakarta Palace and the city.

Landscape character assessment is built on the Landscape Convention of the Council of Europe, which considers landscape as an area perceived by man, formed by the interactions of man and nature. According to the exemplary British practice of landscape character assessment, the particular combination and the unique composition of landscape elements have to be taken into account rather than the specific features independently. Its primary concern is that the whole is more than the sum of the parts. Landscape character assessment results in the identification of landscape character types and landscape character areas. Identifying the character types and character areas happens at more hierarchy level (national, regional, micro-regional and local level). Defining the boundaries, the characteristics, and the main factors contributing to the formation of the character should be a value-free description of the given state. The following stage of the assessment is the landscape evaluation. Making a judgement on the actual state involves locals in a participatory process, and it is the preparatory phase of formulating the landscape quality objectives. In Hungary, the first landscape character assessment, covering the entire area of the country, was carried out between 2017 and 2021. Four micro-regional case studies complemented the nationwide research. The present paper gives a brief overview of the methods used at the national level, including the feedback from the micro-regional assessment, and summarises the results.

In an era of significant growth in the availability of spatial data and continued advances in computing technologies, opportunities for new interpretations and solutions to the landscape research problems posed worldwide are emerging. This paper presents different possibilities of applying digital terrain model (DTM) data in research of various aspects of landscape. For this purpose, two different methods were proposed. The first was to identify a set of components of the Jelenia Góra city landscape character on the basis of the topographic position index and spatial distribution of land cover, while the second was to assess the landscape of Jelenia Góra city in terms of the possibility of adopting new elements, using the author’s scenic absorptivity method. The results indicate the structure of the components of the landscape character of Jelenia Góra city together with its spatial distribution, which also allowed for the delineation of landscape units. The scenic absorptivity analysis showed that there are isolated areas within Jelenia Góra city that are capable of accommodating significant size elements that would not adversely affect the city landscape. In conclusion, DTM data are able to significantly improve research methods in landscape studies.
