Combining thermopreference (Tp) and CO2-gated heat-seeking assays, we studied the thermal preferendum and response to thermal cues in three Culex mosquito species exhibiting differences in native habitat and host preference (e.g., biting cold and/or warm-blooded animals). Results show that these species differ in both Tp and heat-seeking behavior. In particular, we found that Culex territans, which feed primarily on cold-blood hosts, did not respond to heat during heat-seeking assays, regardless of the CO2 concentration, but exhibited an intermediate Tp during resting. In contrast, Cx. quinquefasciatus, which feeds on warm blooded hosts, sought the coolest locations on a thermal gradient and responded only moderately to thermal stimuli when paired with CO2 at higher concentrations. The third species, Cx. tarsalis, which has been shown to feed on a wide range of hosts, responded to heat when paired with high CO2 levels and exhibited a high Tp. This study provides the first insights into the role of heat and CO2 in the host seeking behavior of three disease vectors in the Culex genus and highlights differences in preferred resting temperatures.

The success of the ‟new journalism” in the United States in the 60s of the last century had an impact on the literary process. Truman Garcia Capote's novel ‟In Cold Blood” is an attempt to create a new form of fiction and nonfiction novel, which combines the features of nonfiction and journalism. So there is a genre of ‟criminal journalistic novel”. The author is involved in the investigation of a criminal case. The analysis reveals common typological features of a crime novel. Capote's approaches to the text are investigated, which are similar to journalistic professional methods – interview, reportage, essay. A comparison with previously published works was accomplished, which localises this novel in a different epoch at a new artistic level. The study also identifies the points of contacts and variances in the evaluation of the novel in Western and Russian criticism. The article offers conclusions. Capote's novel ‟In Cold Blood” allows to be focused not only on real criminal events, but also on the moral state of American society in the proposed time frame. The novel differs from the journalistic reportage, there is a special form of a work of art-a journalistic novel-investigation. The synthesis of literature and journalism also proved fruitful for Norman Kingsley Mailer 's nonfiction novels.

Non- enterica subspecies of Salmonella enterica are associated with cold-blood animals. We report the complete genomes of six S. enterica strains (one S. enterica subsp. arizonae strain, four S. enterica subsp. salamae strains, and one S. enterica subsp. diarizonae strain) isolated from Spanish poultry houses. This will increase our knowledge of these non- enterica subspecies.

Abstract Background Uncertainty remains regarding the optimal method of brain protection for procedures that require repair or replacement of the aortic arch. We examined the early outcomes of a technique for brain protection in patients undergoing partial aortic arch (hemiarch) replacement that involves deep hypothermic circulatory arrest (DHCA) and retrograde cerebral perfusion (RCP) of cold blood from the superior vena cava toward the end of the arrest interval. Methods During a recent 15-year interval, 520 patients underwent elective or urgent/emergent ascending aortic and hemiarch replacement as an isolated (47 patients) or combined (473 patients) procedure employing DHCA (mean nasopharyngeal temperature at circulatory arrest, 17.1°C and mean duration, 19.3 minutes) supplemented with RCP of cold blood from the superior vena cava toward the end of the arrest interval (mean, 6.7 minutes). The mean age of the patients was 59.5 years, and 65% were male. Results The in-hospital and 30-day mortality rates were 1.2% (six patients). Seven patients (1.4%) sustained a stroke and 19 patients (3.7%) had transient neurologic dysfunction that completely resolved by the time of hospital discharge. Four patients (0.77%) developed postoperative renal failure requiring dialysis. Twenty-one patients (4%) required ventilator support for >48 hours and five patients (0.96%) required a tracheostomy. The median hospital length of stay was 6 days. Conclusion DHCA with a brief interval of RCP is a safe and effective technique for brain protection during hemiarch aortic replacement. RCP reduces the duration of brain ischemia and permits removal of particulate matter and air from the arterial circulation.

This paper closely reads what constitutes the “non-human” vis-à-vis animality in Bram Stoker’s often overlooked short stories, namely The Squaw and The Burial of the Rats. The Squaw is a tale about an American who murders a kitten in cold blood, and in turn, the mother grotesquely avenges her kitten. The anxiety of interspecies relationship is evident in this text, and I argue that this anxiety allows what Giorgio Agamben calls the “anthropological machine” (a system which excludes animals from the zone of livable human life) to operate. The same can be said in The Burial of the Rats where the inability to articulate a boundary between animality and humanity becomes the same thing that pervasively haunts the characters in the story. Here, the vermin and the humans become “relationally entangled” as Donna Haraway puts it and I argue that the notion of entanglement here is precisely what makes the “anthropological machine” gothic in the stories. I also suggest that what makes the representations of animals horrific is the possibility that the caesura between man and animal is non-existent.

Background: Crystalloid cardioplegic solutions are believed to reduce hemoglobin significantly and increase the transfusion rate. However, recent reports indicate that the del Nido cardioplegia may preserve blood morphology parameters. Methods: In “The del Nido versus cold blood cardioplegia in aortic valve Replacement” trial patients undergoing aortic valve replacement were randomized into the del Nido (DN) or cold blood cardioplegia (CB) group. For the subanalysis, patients who underwent blood transfusions were excluded from the study. Red blood cell (RBC) count, hemoglobin, white blood cell (WBC) count and platelet (PLT) count were measured before the surgery, 24-, 48-, and 96 hours postoperatively. Furthermore, percental variation in first-last measure was compared in groups. In addition, indexed normalized ratio (INR) and activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT) were compared preoperatively and 24 hours after the surgery. Results: Eighteen (24%) patients from the del Nido group and 22 (29.3%) patients from the CB group received blood product transfusions (p = 0.560) and were excluded from further analysis. As such, 57 patients remained in DN group and 53 patients remained in CB group. No difference was found in RBC, hemoglobin, WBC, and platelet count in time intervals. Percental variation in first-last measure revealed higher fall in RBC (p = 0.0024) and hemoglobin (p = 0.0028) in the CB group. No difference was shown in preoperative and 24-hour postoperative INR and aPTT. Conclusions: The del Nido cardioplegia does not decrease blood morphology parameters when compared to cold blood cardioplegia and may be used alternatively regardless of bleeding and coagulopathy risk.

Background Lactated Ringer-based del Nido cardioplegia has been reported to be safe for acquired cardiac surgery. The original Plasma-Lyte-based solution has been proved for congenital cardiac surgery but its modification has not been adequately examined. We compared the clinical outcomes of congenital cardiac surgery using lactated Ringer-based del Nido cardioplegia versus cold blood cardioplegia. Methods Between September 2018 and November 2020, 116 consecutive patients with congenital heart disease undergoing operations with cardioplegic arrest performed by a single surgeon at Faculty of Medicine Siriraj hospital; 66 with modified del Nido solution and 50 with institutional's blood cardioplegia. The patient risk profiles, operative details, mortality rates, care durations, inotrope use, blood transfusion and complications were compared. Results Preoperative characteristics were similar between groups, including median age (2.5 vs. 3.1 years; p = 0.49), size, and gender. The Society of Thoracic Surgeons-European Association for Cardio-Thoracic Surgery score of 3 to 5 was more prevalent in the del Nido group (24.2% vs. 10%; p = 0.049). There were 4 deaths in the modified del Nido group (risk category score of 4) but none in the cold blood group (p = 0.13). There was no significant difference in median intubation duration, length of intensive care unit stay, and vasoactive medications immediately and 24 h after the operation. The del Nido group required 70 to 100 ml less blood transfusion (p = 0.04). All complications were similar between the two groups. Conclusions Clinical outcomes of lactated Ringer-based del Nido cardioplegia were comparable to those of blood cardioplegia in congenital cardiac surgery.

BackgroundFrog Virus 3 (FV3) is a large dsDNA virus belonging to Ranaviruses of family Iridoviridae. Ranaviruses infect cold-blood vertebrates including amphibians, fish and reptiles, and contribute to catastrophic amphibian declines. FV3 has a genome at ~105 kb that contains nearly 100 coding genes and 50 intergenic regions as annotated in its reference genome. Previous studies have mainly focused on coding genes and rarely addressed potential non-coding regulatory role of intergenic regions.ResultsUsing a whole transcriptomic analysis of total RNA samples containing both the viral and cellular transcripts from FV3-infected frog tissues, we detected virus-specific reads mapping in non-coding intergenic regions, in addition to reads from coding genes. Further analyses identified multiple cis-regulatory elements (CREs) in intergenic regions neighboring highly transcribed coding genes. These CREs include not only a virus TATA-Box present in FV3 core promoters as in eukaryotic genes, but also viral mimics of CREs interacting with several transcription factors including CEBPs, CREBs, IRFs, NF-κB, and STATs, which are critical for regulation of cellular immunity and cytokine responses. Our study suggests that intergenic regions immediately upstream of highly expressed FV3 genes have evolved to bind IRFs, NF-κB, and STATs more efficiently. Moreover, we found an enrichment of putative microRNA (miRNA) sequences in more than five intergenic regions of the FV3 genome. Our sequence analysis indicates that a fraction of these viral miRNAs is targeting the 3’-UTR regions of Xenopus genes involved in interferon (IFN)-dependent responses, including particularly those encoding IFN receptor subunits and IFN-regulatory factors (IRFs).ConclusionsUsing the FV3 model, this study provides a first genome-wide analysis of non-coding regulatory mechanisms adopted by ranaviruses to epigenetically regulate both viral and host gene expressions, which have co-evolved to interact especially with the host IFN response.

Abstract This article historicizes viral transmissions through the global supply chain of blood plasma between the United States and the People’s Republic of China (PRC). Since the 1941 initiation of plasma donation to serve US armed forces, privately exported US blood products have contributed significantly to a globalized industry, valuing $21 billion in sales by 2017. Although maintaining a blood surplus has been crucial for treating illnesses and traumatic injuries, blood banking has been a source for massive viral transmissions, including HIV and hepatitis C. Examining the news, activism, and state responses to blood-borne outbreaks across the United States and PRC, this essay outlines a constellation of viral infections derived from plasma coerced from US prisoners and PRC rural villagers. Viruses archive the structural violences of the global pharmaceutical and blood biotechnology industries. They point to the cyclical relations between persistent class-based racial and ethnic disparities, technoscientific experimentation, and viral epidemics across polities.
