The article "The problem of euphemisms in the medical terminology of the English and Tatar languages" discusses issues related to euphemisms, in particular, the field organization of euphemisms in the medical terminology of the English and Tatar languages. The study uses a comparative analysis and the field organization of euphemisms in medical terminology is established to be the basis of comparison.  Another method applied is the method of comparative interpretation and the principles of interpretation of the compared material of the two languages are determined. The results of this study make it possible to use the obtained theoretical outcomes and the collected lexical material in courses of general linguistics, lexicology and stylistics of the English and Tatar languages. In addition, the data obtained can be used in teaching professionally oriented English, for example in practical lessons of English language and while teaching translation practice to students of medical sciences. The lexical material obtained in the course of the research can supplement the existing dictionaries of euphemisms of medical terminology in the English language and form the basis of the dictionary of euphemisms of medical terminology in the Tatar language. Thus, one can observe the universal features of the field organization of euphemisms in English and Tatar languages for the first position of the first row, second, third and fifth rows. There are some differences in the rest of the ranks.   Received: 20 August 2021 / Accepted: 18 November 2021 / Published: 3 January 2022

The present paper aims to reveal similar and different features when realizing the speech behavior pattern (SPB) of permission in Russian and German. The SPB analysis includes the following major factors to be concerned with: definition of illocutionary purpose of the SPB in terms of Natural Semantic Metalanguage, description of basic grammatical constructions belonging to SBP and identification of communicative-pragmatic factors important for choice of a specific utterance. The possibilities of expressing the SBP of permission in Russian and German are described using the method of the communicative-pragmatic field (CPF). The peculiarities of the field organization in these languages are revealed. The language data are taken from the existing Russian and German corpora.

AbstractIn Drosophila, direction-selective neurons implement a mechanism of motion computation similar to cortical neurons, using contrast-opponent receptive fields with ON and OFF subfields. It is not clear how the presynaptic circuitry of direction-selective neurons in the OFF pathway supports this computation if all major inputs are OFF-rectified neurons. Here, we reveal the biological substrate for motion computation in the OFF pathway. Three interneurons, Tm2, Tm9 and CT1, provide information about ON stimuli to the OFF direction-selective neuron T5 across its receptive field, supporting a contrast-opponent receptive field organization. Consistent with its prominent role in motion detection, variability in Tm9 receptive field properties transfers to T5, and calcium decrements in Tm9 in response to ON stimuli persist across behavioral states, while spatial tuning is sharpened by active behavior. Together, our work shows how a key neuronal computation is implemented by its constituent neuronal circuit elements to ensure direction selectivity.

This dataset constitutes a panel follow-up to the 2016/2017 Suriname Survey of Living Conditions. It measures welfare related variables before and after the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic including labor market outcomes, financial literacy, and food security. The survey was executed in August 2020. The Suriname COVID-19 Survey is a project of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB). It collected data on critical socioeconomic topics in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic to support policymaking and help mitigate the crisis impacts on the populations welfare. The survey recontacted households interviewed in 2016/2017 by the Suriname Survey of Living Conditions (SSLC) and was conducted by phone due to the mobility restrictions and social distancing measures in place. It interviewed 1,016 households during August 2020 and gathered information about disease transmission, household finances, labor, income, remittances, spending, and social protection programs. Data and documentation of the 2016/2017 Suriname Survey of Living Conditions can be found at: https://publications.iadb.org/en/suriname-survey-living-conditions-2016-2017 The survey was designed and implemented by Sistemas Integrales. This publication describes the main methodological aspects, such as sample design, estimation procedures, topics covered by the questionnaire, field organization and quality control. It also presents the structure and codebook for the two resulting publicly available datasets.

In Drosophila, direction-selective neurons implement a mechanism of motion computation similar to cortical neurons, using contrast-opponent receptive fields with ON and OFF subunits. It is not clear how the presynaptic circuitry of direction-selective neurons in the OFF pathway supports this computation, because all major inputs are OFF-rectified neurons. Here, we reveal the biological substrate for motion computation in the OFF pathway. Three interneurons, Tm2, Tm9 and CT1, also provide information about ON stimuli to the OFF direction-selective neuron T5 across its receptive field, supporting a contrast-opponent receptive field organization. Consistent with its prominent role in motion detection, variability in Tm9 receptive field properties is passed on to T5, and calcium decrements in Tm9 in response to ON stimuli are maintained across behavioral states, while spatial tuning is sharpened by active behavior. Together, our work shows how a key neuronal computation is implemented by its constituent neuronal circuit elements to ensure direction selectivity.

The article examines the influence of COVID-19 on the semantics dynamics of the term "crisis" in German economic terminology. The appearance of the influence of extralingual factors on the formation of the term was analyzed and the change or the appearance of a new emotional coloring in some terms was singled out. First of all, COVID-19 has made irreparable changes to a large number of existing, standardized terms. Coronavirus has acted as a powerful extra-lingual factor, changing the lexical meaning of words as quickly as we get news of new anti-coronavirus incidence records. Environment, society, live standard - these are the factors that can influence the emergence of negative or positive emotional colors. Extralinguistic factors of terminological nomination are closely correlated with the specifics of a particular field of scientific knowledge, with the conditions of its formation and development, thus participating in the formation of certain patterns and advantages in the choice of linguistic means to represent scientific concepts and to determine certain features of nominative originality. For some extralinguistic factors there is a direct connection with the traditional linguistic aspects of terminological nomination, such as, for example, the motivation of terms, methods of term formation, the specifics of term elements. The importance of one or another extralinguistic factor can be confirmed quantitatively, and this is done with the help of mathematical methods of analysis of language material. German terminology is a system built on the principles of field organization. The core of this system is terminological vocabulary, which means codified, systematized terminology. Various long-term studies of German terms have identified several features of this lexical layer. The conducted research is quite valuable in the linguistic environment. It can be classified as "non-standard", as research in this area has not yet been conducted and the topic of German economic terminology related to COVID-19 and the concept of "Crisis" remains open. A lot of work has been done to find definitions, but also a great achievement of my work is to create the own definitions based on context.

Land reclamation and drainage networks represent one of the most ancient human modifications of the Italian soilscape, where tailored land set-up systems were developed in agro- and forestecosystems in three millennia of man’s activity. Most of once manually maintained land settings are currently scarcely working or even disappeared because of the cost needed for their maintenance and the advent of mechanization that have simplified the field organization. The scarce attention to the soil experienced in the last decades, has accelerated soil erosion and flooding events, which entailed high costs in terms of money and human lives, but also caused reduction of soil thickness, water holding capacity, and fertility. In view of a sustainable agriculture, it is mandatory to assess the role of land set-up systems, which for centuries have been key in protecting soil from erosion, but also in increasing soil fertility. Such an effort cannot be made without considering the different pedo-climatic conditions and land uses of the Italian territory, which is different with respect to the past because of the multiple transformations made to favour the mechanization of agriculture. In this review we discuss the main effect of Italian land settings on the soilscape and on soil physicochemical conditions. Since land settings were developed centuries ago, detailed information about their effect on specific soil parameters is scarce in the scientific literature; thus, in some case, we provide information gathered in places where land set-up systems are still present.
